Chapter 272: Party Crashers

An hour before the explosion, a few soldiers and a few mages were present while escorting two people who went to Darcero Kingdom before the ban from Luminiera Kingdom and one of the catalysts for the ban’s existence.

"I heard that they will start a celebration for the new year at midnight. Explosions in the sky are one of the opening stuff that they like to do," one of the mages said.

"Explosions eh? A good opening for the new year is definitely not explosions but this city is using that for celebrating the new year? I don’t know what they are eating but they are just asking for trouble for having explosions instead," Maria shook her head, looking disgusted.

"Well, that doesn’t matter. It’s still good for business I must say and their consuming anything related to explosives and firecrackers is something that would be good for business. But considering that explosives and firecrackers are only used for us in war is something strange that they use that for celebration," Victor who keeps on thinking about business still thinks about how to profit.

"It doesn’t matter. Anyways, you people know the plan, yes?" Maria turned to look at the magicians.

"Yes! Once clock almost strikes midnight, we will attack and mask the explosions here on this town with the explosion that they will use on their celebration to wreck havoc," the magician answered.

"B-but, wouldn’t that kill many people?" one reluctant magician asked.

"Yes, that might be true. But you accepted the job, and so you fulfill it unless you don’t want to receive your fair share of money?" Victor grins at the magician.

The magician who complained stopped talking and just looked down.

"Alright, looks like you all are fine with the plan then? Unless anyone wants to back out, then feel free to do so. But remember that we will not bother to give you any money once the job is done, alright? It’s your own choice for backing down."

The reluctant magician sighed and left the area. "I can’t do it! I use magic for the sake of making the lives of people a better thing! Not kill people using it!"

Before he can leave the place, one magician immediately shot him on his body and the magician slumps into the ground.

"Is he dead?" Victor asked.

"Not really. But it is a better way to keep him like that. There is a chance he will suddenly compromise the plan and we don’t want that to happen. Let him be."

Mary nodded in satisfaction. "Good thinking. I guess it is money well spent. With this explosion, I doubt these people will see it coming. This is a payment for how you treated us back then, Elaina. As for these civilians, let’s just say that this is a punishment from god for accepting heretics who does not get rid of the twins immediately. It is their fault for thinking that the twins are just harmless people to begin with."

...

...

...

The explosion is strong and it is the only explosion present in the whole town as the fireworks and firecrackers are less and not being used due to the celebration itself is being just less grand and more like formality of celebration due to the tight budget.

However, that explosion earlier, is not something from a regular firecracker or explosion from fireworks. That is much stronger and devastating even in the distance.

"Let’s hurry!" Elaina said to Julia as they are about to set off to the town center.

"Elaina! What is going on? What was that huge shake I felt just now?" Grandpa asked as he immediately get outside of the farmhouse still holding a glass of juice in his hands.

Even Douglas and Grandma came out as well who are confused on what is going on as well.

"Something happened in the town center. It sounds like an explosion and so we are going to check and see what is going on," Elaina explained.

"I felt a strong wave of mana being shot out just now and I have a bad feeling about it," Julia said.

"Let me come with you two, that felt big. There is no way that was something simple. Honey, can you guard the place while we are investigating the area?" Grandpa asked a favor to Grandma.

"Leave it to me. If anything happens, I will be here to help."

Douglas is also worried and he decided to tag along with us even with Grandpa insisting to stay behind. He is worried on Marigold’s safety.

As the four sets off towards the town, the smell of smoke, and the burnt odor wafting around is enough to know that is not a good sign. And with how the smoke all over the place covering the place, Elaina knows something is not looking good and felt nervous on what they will be seeing soon.

It didn’t take them too long to arrive at the location and before them, they saw the aftermath of the explosion. It didn’t make a big crater or something but something definitely exploded on the center seeing the blast radius present on the ground.

The ground is littered with the ruins of food stalls, mooncakes are scattered around, some are burnt, some are being stepped on, while some are just toppled over. However, the mooncakes are not the one that everyone is looking at.

The number of people groaning and crying for help as well as the people who are no longer moving and are covered in the mess. All are wounded and some are having some nasty injuries that Julia didn’t want to see it.

"This is no accident... This is an attack! Douglas, get to safety, we don’t know if there are still more trouble lurking around...?!" Grandpa orders Douglas to take cover when something is being hurled towards our direction. Grandpa has quick reflexes and grabbed the thing that was being hurled to our direction and as soon as he saw it on his hands, he immediately throws the thing up in the sky where it exploded.

"What was that?!" Elaina frowned.

"Magic Grenade. Stronger than regular grenades but unlike the latter, they explode after a certain number of time instead of contact. And since they are much different than regular grenades, they are more devastating and they are more better for stealth explosives and can act as remote dynamite if necessary. I have seen those things back when I am still the appointed hero and still travelling around the world with our companions. Those who have magic can detect this before explosion and they can either diffuse it or run away in the vicinity before explosion. But for civilians, this is totally lethal," Grandpa explained.

As soon as they heard the explanation, they immediately assumed their battle stance.

Julia activate some sort of magic that involves her eyes and squinted on the direction where the magic grenade came from and she quickly pointed out.

"There, I see two mages and a few soldiers...wait, those armor...aren’t they armor of the Luminiera Kingdom’s army?!"

Grandpa didn’t waste time and quickly jump right into action. As soon as Julia pinpointed their location using her magic, Grandpa immediately jumps into action and Elaina went to help and assist Grandpa.

"Retreat! We are under attack!" the soldiers started running away after one the soldiers were knocked out.

"Don’t think we will just let you f*ckers go while causing this trouble for us!"

While her Grandpa is focusing on the soldiers, Elaina rushes towards the magicians and with her sword, she quickly slices their ankles causing them to fall into the ground and disabling them in the process.

"Madam, Sir! We need backup!"

Elaina frowned when two individuals came out from the dark while carrying a few explosives in their hands, ready to provide support. However, they were stunned as soon as they saw who was currently standing right before them.

"So you two are the reason for this chaos, Mother, Father."

Elaina might treat them as her regular parents, but even this is not enough for her to respect their actions. And now...it seems they have become terrorists.

"I can’t stand what you guys are doing right now. You guys need to turn yourselves over to the authorities."

Maria and Victor grinned. They might be surprised by Elaina’s appearance but they are not afraid of her.

"Hmph, you might be our daughter, but we don’t have a heretic in our family!" Maria readies a magic grenade in her hands.

"If only you act like your Sister Selena then we will not be in this situation, Elaina."

However, they were stopped in their tracks when someone else appeared beside Elaina.

"Guess I am a heretic as well, heathens? Then there’s no need for further discussions. I thought you lot are better than this, but I didn’t expect to see this happen to you, Son," Grandpa said as he shook his head and felt hurt on what Elaina’s father is doing.

"You might be my Son and she might be my daughter in law, but in my eyes, you guys are just murderers. Time for judgement."

Grandpa then slams his fists before them.
