Chapter 271: Explosive New Year

Elaina might be considered a beginner cook, but that doesn’t mean she is not going to learn any of the cooking methods she is seeing from Douglas, who is cooking multiple dishes in one go. She can only dream of doing that in her dreams and not in reality, as she can only cook simple dishes involving soup, frying, and grilling meat. But seeing Douglas do some cooking made her realize that there is so much more to do in cooking than she thought there would be.

And so, instead of being overwhelmed, she savored her experience and slowly but surely took advantage of this event and watched with pure determination to learn from the master. Douglas doesn’t mind Elaina watching and in fact, he is showing off to Elaina which makes it more amazing for Elaina to see. He might be a man of no words but he shows his actions to be more proof of his expertise in the field. It is no wonder his PUB is quite famous and full-packed whenever he opens.

The dishes that are being made are slowly being cooked. Because it will be used for the nighttime celebration, those who are slow to cook dishes are the first ones to be cooked before doing the dishes that are prepared fast. For Elaina, she just realized that being a cook is just as similar to farming. The only difference is that if farming is slow and steady to produce good results, cooking deserves attention and accuracy to ensure that the taste of the food does not become a disaster. Both need perseverance and hard work to produce the best results.

Suppose Elaina wanted to become a master cook as well. In that case, Elaina will have to practice from the simplest dishes to the most complicated dishes, slowly but surely as basics are necessary to progress through the difficulty levels. Now she appreciates more those who are masters in these fields. For someone who works for people waiting, they are quite good at preparing things that would satisfy the palates of their customers.

After assisting Douglas in the outdoor kitchen, Douglas allowed Elaina to rest after she could tell that she was getting tired from doing so. She can now tell the difference between fatigue accumulating from doing farm work and doing kitchen work. Farm work makes fatigue build up the longer one works on the farm’s fields like tilling the soil while enduring the sun’s heat but for cooking, not only do you have to endure the heat of the flames, but you also have to be actively working to ensure the food being prepared does not get wasted as a result.

"So, how is the feeling of being a temporary assistant to my husband in the kitchen?" Marigold asked Elaina after she got out of the fiery battlefield of the kitchen’s flames.

"I was expecting it to be chill work seeing how Mr. Douglas is making it easy from the outsider’s perspective but once I was there, even though I am just an assistant, that wasn’t a chill experience at all. It needs precise work, experience, and expertise to be able to properly become a professional cook," Elaina showed her admiration for Douglas’s work now.

"Haha, I was like you when I became an assistant to Douglas back when we first married. Since I finished my work as mayor and still didn’t want to rest, I went ahead and helped him with his work, and just like you said, it was not an easy task, but it slowly became normal and easy as time went on. It might look hard at first but I don’t think it was that hard. You just need to be in the kitchen a few more times than you think," Marigold smiled as she started to reminisce about the old days.

The progress might start slow for Elaina, but she is determined to also learn cooking. With her twins going to grow into adults in the blink of an eye, she will need to learn how to cook and balance her work for them as well. Not only that but once she starts cooking, it will also help her earn experience for the Almanac and let it open the few pages that were present in that book. Completing the Almanac and opening its locked pages will be something she will be working hard on in the future.

Despite the party for the New Year is going to be held at night, even during lunchtime, the place is already vibing and the others are already laughing with their friends as they eat and drink in advance. Unlike formal parties, regular parties that only occur in the yard of your house might be a bit chaotic and a bit more out of place, but considering the vibes alone, it is a lot more times better than regular banquets she has experienced in the past. And honestly, even though those banquets have a showy atmosphere and great food to eat, it wasn’t as good as hanging out with friends and talking sh*t with each other as they get drunk from the atmosphere alone. Elaina is more than happy that she can experience it like this.

...

It’s nighttime and yet the farm remains as lively as ever. Even if you go out of the streets, the place is full of people and not just people walking around being loud, but all the people currently celebrating the event with their friends. It might not be similar to the festivities back in the last new year, but it is still showing that even with calamity hitting them, once they have recovered, they will still find a way to have fun even in the trying times.

While Elaina was resting and looking up at the sky, observing the bright moon shining in the sky, Julia appeared behind Elaina and tapped her shoulder.

"Sis, so you are here!" Julia happily sits beside Elaina as she hands over a glass of orange juice that is just freshly squeezed.

"Where are the twins?" Elaina asked as she accepted the glass.

"Don’t worry, Grandma is currently playing with them at the moment and told me to have a rest for a while."

"Well, she is right. You have been working hard since earlier. You deserve some break."

"Yeah. I didn’t expect to find Adelaide to feel like a toddler now even though she is still technically a baby. But it is a bit refreshing as well since she can now understand what you are saying. I must say, gifted children are just built differently than us regular children."

Elaina smiled and nodded. She hoped that even though Adelaide had matured faster than Arthur, the two would still remain knit tight with each other.

"By the way Sis, new year is almost here. Marigold is already in the plaza and is giving away mooncakes. Are you going to head there as well?" Julia asked.

"Yeah. I was going there once the celebration officially commenced. Marigold said that she would only hand the mooncakes once it is officially midnight to coincide with the celebration."

"Then, how about we head over there now? Lining up would be a pain and being there in advance will allow us to line up faster."

"Are you joining me? Then let’s go together!"

Just as the two are about to stand up, a huge explosion shakes the entire surroundings and everyone on the farm is shocked to see a huge cloud coming from the Town Center.

"An explosion? Is that part of the celebration?"

"Uhh...Sis, I don’t think so. These explosions, aren’t mere explosions, that came from firecrackers. It sounds like they came from a small bomb or a box full of dynamite lit up. These explosions are not meant to be part of the festive atmosphere!"
