Chapter 212: Cultivation of the Four Season Field [II]
There are four mature bamboo shoots in the entire field so far. It’s small in number but that’s because most of what Elaina has seen is not yet mature and is still growing so she is not touching it just yet. However, she didn’t just harvest four bamboo shoots, she harvested at least 10 bamboo shoots, it’s just that the extra six shoots are more suitable for replanting and regrowing in a different spot because they have some side shoots present. She could use it for consumption but it would be better to relocate it to a better area and focus its cultivation there instead of scattering it all over the place.
Once Elaina had already finished harvesting the matured bamboo shoots, she scanned the whole field again to ensure that she didn’t miss out on anything that might become important in the future and it seemed that nothing else was left.
"Alright. So, what should be the best way for me to start this place from shaping up?" Elaina asked the God of Farming.
"[How about you divide the place for growing vegetables and fruits in one area and in another area the medicinal herbs and fruits? With this place being in a dungeon and a place where adventurers will be frequently in need of herbs, having some growing on the field would be a great thing.]
"But wouldn’t the adventurers be taking advantage of that instead? Stealing and stuff?"
"[That is for something you will have to think, Elaina. Since you will be planting in an area where people will constantly appear and walk by, and have a very small percentage of people trying to steal or defile the field, you will have to ensure that those things will not happen. Only you and those people you allowed will be able to have access to these things.]"
Elaina scratches her head. The God of Farming is right, he has no reason to help her with the security of the field, but she would have appreciated it if he at least gave a good opinion or idea on what to do.
Since she is on her own in terms of the security of the farm, she will have to ask Julia or Troy about this matter and how to install some security on the field. She will not be always there on the field so there is going to be a hard chance for her to enforce rules on the field.
She can also bribe the guards that are guarding the dungeon to also look out for some intruders around that would defile the field. Since they are always around the area, they will be able to do something if the other people who will think about it will get reprimanded somehow.
There are plenty of ways to do it, but she will have to think about it more later on.
On that note, the God of Farming’s suggestion of separating the field into two areas where the medicinal herbs and fruits will be grown and the vegetables and fruits have different areas is a good one. She can focus on one area full of vegetables and have the other area full of herbs that can be used for potions and other ways to apply.
"Alright, my trusty hoe, let’s get working, shall we? Just don’t give up on me just because you are rusty. You will still be able to do great."
And so, Elaina started tilling the ground. The guards that are guarding the dungeon and the labyrinth entrance are now watching her as she continues to do her job. She can see them watching her but since they are not ridiculing or stopping her, she didn’t stop either and continued to do her job.
The field is big and although she worked fast with her trusty hoe, it was still a lot of work and even Elaina had to stop a few times to catch her breath. It’s not easy but she likes the adrenaline-pumping action so far.
After a few times of rest, she will resume her work and continue to work up some sweat. While she was doing her work, she saw a few adventurers entering from time to time and they looked decently equipped so far. They looked quite professional as well and with how the level entry of the dungeon has changed, they might be an expert or professional level by this point.
They were surprised at first when they saw her working on the field but soon realized that the field itself is a design of the dungeon and having someone plant it out is indeed the main case so they soon ignored her and went straight to the dungeon to slay monsters.
Elaina mentally noted the number of people who entered so far. There are 5 of them who entered, 3 men and two women. She is just doing a mental headcount to see how dangerous the place is really going to be. She can’t use her grandparents as the metric as they are really strong and she couldn’t see them lose to something even on the first floor so she instead used the adventurers to see how frequently there are some injuries and accidents that will occur on the place.
With the mental note on her mind, Elaina continued with her work and started sowing some seeds. Potatoes and carrots are what she currently tested first as they will be easy to grow and they are easy to tell if they are in a bad area or healthy area.
After sowing a few seeds, she then headed over to the water fountain nearby took some water from the watering can, and watered the newly seeded plants one by one. It took her some time but soon enough, she was done and she sighed in relief after the first half of her work was done.
With the spring season field done, Elaina decided to go back early for lunch. Not only does she need to have her babies fed with milk later, but she also wants to take a quick nap before she returns to her work and continues cultivating the other side of the field.
As she was about to head out and go back home, the adventurers who had entered had exited and this time, instead of five people, only three returned with one of them being in a terrible state. One woman, and two men with one of them being bloody from his head and his other arm. It was like his right arm was limp as he was being helped by the other man on the other side while the woman was on the opposite side.
"...It seems there are casualties, what happened down there?" Grandpa asked as he ordered the other people to carry the injured to the makeshift infirmary and treat his wounds in the process.
"We got careless and we thought the monsters were weak so we tried to do the usual in our routine, only for one of us to fall right into the trap of the dungeon and die in the process, while the other was mauled by one of the bosses and died in the battle. We cleared five floors so far but this is a ridiculous difficulty," the other man who didn’t have much wound said.
"I see. Have you got any of their proof of life with the two deceased?" Grandpa asked.
The Proof of Life is a necklace that the adventurer wears to use as their identification in case they die in the dungeon. They are brought back by their comrades if they die inside or if they are discovered inside the dungeon so that the Adventurer’s Guild will record them and keep their memories alive even though they have died. Elaina thought of this at first as a way to revive inside the dungeon but it wasn’t the main case and only people like her grandma is capable of reviving someone who has died recently.
"We only have the one who has been mauled by the boss earlier. We retrieved it after we slayed the boss. As for the other one, we can’t retrieve it as we can’t just risk our lives to take it with a trap still functioning and so we have no choice but to abandon his proof of life."
"Alright. One proof of life. Although the owner of this has died, she will be remembered by the guild for their work. We will compensate you three after this."
The two nodded as they continued to look at the guy groaning in pain.
Elaina sighed and it seemed that the dungeon was indeed quite dangerous. And despite their preparations, it seems that they have underestimated the place so hard that they ended up losing a few people.
Although the casualties are not too terrible, it is still bad and it means that things are not so friendly underneath either. Having a good potion and a decent adventurer might perhaps survive the depths, so Elaina is determined to have the field soon fully set up for the medicinal herbs to grow properly in the future.
But for now, with how the people are still checking and surveying the labyrinth’s layout for now, it seems things will continue for a bit like this in the next few days.
"Hmm, my work for now is done. Time to head back. Adventurer’s life sucks, huh..."
