Chapter 155: Hired Muscle

Elaina was surprised when she saw the two horns underneath the cloth covering his head. It wasn’t that obvious when it was covered, allowing him to hide his true identity.

"As you can see, this young man here is a half-minotaur and half-human. We call those people halflings. Perhaps it is your first time meeting one, Miss Elaina?" Marigold asked.

"Yeah. I was surprised at first so I didn’t expect him to have horns when he removed his head cover and thought he was covering it because he had an injury or some embarrassing secret to hide underneath it. It’s just horns, why hide it?" Elaina looked at the young man with a confused look on her face.

"...What?" the young man was surprised by what he heard. He thought Elaina would start to feel disgusted with him after he showed up and revealed his secret. For some reason, he found it strange that this pregnant woman seemed to be unaware of the stigma between the halflings like him and some people.

"I guess it is understandable, considering that you are from the Luminiera Kingdom. That place is very strict to the entry of halflings in the city which is why you have not known or have even heard about them, I guess."

Elaina was surprised. She didn’t know that hybrids like this young man existed. Is it really that strict back in the Luminiera Kingdom to the point that she didn’t even know some people like them existed? Perhaps, since information regarding other species is regulated quite strictly there by the Church, it is normal for her to not even know their existence.

"Anyways, enough of that. Are you willing to hire this young man and have him take the job?" Marigold asked.

"Wait, before I accept him, I have a few questions to ask him. I needed to confirm if I can trust him or not. Halfling or not, I will have to do it to ensure I am not going to regret hiring him in the end."

Marigold and the young man nodded.

"A-ask away, Ma’am," the young man nervously nodded.

"First, how old are you? I know for sure that demi-humans like you can be deceiving in terms of age. You might look like a young boy but you are an old man in terms of human age. So I want to ensure that you are old enough."

"You can tell if he is going to lie or not?" Marigold asked Elaina.

"Yes. I have a way of knowing if he is lying or not," Elaina smiled as she looked at the young man. And yes, what she said is true. She can tell if he is lying or not since she has the almanac that can easily tell her what this prospective employee truly is. The moment he lies about his age, then it is over and she will not bother finishing it.

"I am still fairly young. Although I am a halfling, it seems I didn’t inherit any of my mom’s genes as a minotaur. I age normally like a human does."

Elaina was surprised when she heard that the one who was a minotaur was not his father but actually his mother while the father is the real human. Elaina doesn’t know what to say to this except that the father seems to have some exotic taste for him to fall in love with a minotaur and have a son with him.

As for what he said, everything he said is true. He is indeed 16 and he doesn’t age slowly like other demi-humans. He is still a demi-human but he ages normally and grows naturally like humans.

"Okay, next question. Are you a convicted criminal, hiding from the law? Or any sort of escapee? Have you done any crimes that would warrant you to get in jail?" Elaina asked.

The young boy sweats but he didn’t lie. He tells Elaina the truth. "Although I am not a criminal, I have sought revenge and killed someone back then."

The two frowned and looked at the young boy who was nervously confessing.

"However, I have to do it as he killed both my mother and father by sending a mob of people to attack my mother. Because my mother is a minotaur, she faced discrimination and she was not accepted as a normal citizen which caused us to live in the woods, just near the town. One faithful night, they attacked our house and attacked my mother who was then shielded by my father for a crime she didn’t do. As for me, they let me escape before the mob arrived. Because she didn’t want to kill, she let them attack her which caused her death. My father was included in the mob attack."

Elaina clenches her fist. She has an idea of what happened next and why this young boy killed someone. And she can understand the reason for that and if she was in his shoes, she would do the same.

The boy continued, "I learned after from the whispers of the people in town that the reason my parents were killed was that one of the neighbors in town was not happy that we were living in the forest where he was logging illegally and would get reprimanded by my mother in the process. So he invented a reason for them to get thrown out or perhaps get killed in the process in which he succeeded. After knowing this, I killed him one night in his sleep while no one knew and successfully got away from the crime in the process. It’s been 10 years since then and I didn’t regret what I did."

Elaina sighed and even Marigold shook her head. The young boy knew that everything was over after confessing and he would either go to jail or something, but he knew he told them the truth, that’s what his father taught him back when he was still alive.

"Then, I will be going," the young boy slowly covered his head again with the cloth in his hands.

He was about to leave when Elaina stopped him from doing so.

"Where are you going? I thought you wanted this job?" Elaina asked.

"Huh? I thought you wouldn’t hire me. Because I killed someone in the past?"

"And who told you that? Yes, you did kill someone, but it is a justified one. And even I might have done the same if I was in your shoes."

"So you still plan on hiring him, Elaina?" Marigold asked.

"Yeah. It might seem a bad idea initially, but I don’t think so. And besides, based on my judgment from him in my first look at him, I think he is a fine man to hire. He should be perfect for the job."

Elaina then turned her eyes to the young boy and this time, she tapped his shoulder and smiled.

"One last question, what is your name?"

"M-my name? It’s Curaj."

Elaina nodded and smiled, patting his shoulders a few times.

"Welcome to the farm, Curaj. You are now hired."

The young boy named Curaj was shocked and he even pinched himself to ensure that he wasn’t just hallucinating when he heard the words. Marigold smiled and tapped Curaj’s shoulders, nodding at him with approval.

"You make sure to work hard on Elaina’s farm alright? She might be a gentle and kind woman but she is quite strict at work and will work you to the bone. Of course, with the appropriate wage for your hard work of course."

"Y-yes! I will ensure that I will work hard!"

Although Elaina didn’t know it at that time, Elaina hired one of the people that she would depend on a lot in the work around her farm as she slowly expanded. He will be one of the vital parts that would complete the workforce of Elaina but that would be in the future.

Like what Marigold told her, Curaj begins his work and showcases how he is an industrious and workaholic guy. He is a newbie to the work but he is willing to learn and he gets to learn fast, making him a great deal.

At first, he was surprised when he learned that the other workers that Elaina mentioned before that were not categorized as humans were the Feys. He was so shocked about it that he kept on rubbing his eyes to ensure that he wasn’t dreaming when he learned that they existed.

Julia was also happy that there was someone else who would be working with her on the farm while Elaina was pregnant. And since Julia doesn’t mind demi-humans either, Curaj is happy to have someone closer to his age to be a good friend.

Elaina then ordered Curaj to create some Orchard Trellis on the nearby vacant lot by using some of the wood that Elaina bought from Jacob’s woodwork. Now that Autumn is approaching, it is also time for Elaina to prepare for the work.

While Elaina is busy commanding the work on her farm, an impending event is about to happen that will originate from the sea which will soon involve Elaina and her farm.
