Chapter 153: Wanted: Helper For Hire
Chapter 153: Wanted: Helper For Hire
While Princess Margaux is currently agonizing about the impending meeting she will have with her fiancee, Elaina is currently drafting plans that she needs to do, now that she is not able to have first-hand work on the farm. She is currently discussing these things with the Feys and Julia who will be helping with the farm work.
"Autumn is about to arrive in the next two weeks. Next week will also be the big harvest that we are waiting for, the corn will be mature and ready to harvest while strawberries and cucumbers will also be under the final harvest and we will have to clear them out for the next season. Then, we will have a big cleanup of the field as we will be finalizing the orchard area before Autumn officially hits," Elaina said as she drew to the paper the draft plans on the next course of action for everyone.
"That’s a lot of things to do by the end of Summer. And we have yet to enter the opening days of Autumn. Usually, autumn is one of the busiest times of the year as it is also the time when most farmers prepare their crops and their grains to be stored inside so that they will last in winter," Bam scratches his chin while looking at the plans with a frown on his face.
"Yeah. And sadly, I can’t help much, now that my belly is big, I don’t think I am going to even be of any help," Elaina sighed.
"What are you saying, Sis? Without your instructions, things will be more chaotic and hard to do. The way you gave instructions is what makes us do the work on the farm without many problems arising," Julia said with a big thumbs up to Elaina.
"Indeed, Boss. So don’t worry too much. We will do our best to do all the work and eagerly wait for the harvesting time."
Hearing that, Elaina smiled. She then continued to make the plans on the paper before remembering something that she was meant to ask Bam and Poe.
"Bam, Poe, you two are local spirits of this kingdom, yes?"
The two nodded in response with a frown, confused about why Elaina asked them about it.
"Yeah. Why boss?" Poe asked, tilting her head.
"You see, in Luminiera Kingdom, the winter there is not so bad and it is still pretty warm. Snow isn’t that thick either and it doesn’t build up that much. What about here? I would like to know whether the snow here gets thick very easily or not."
"Ah, if you mean how heavy snowfalls here during winter, then it is quite thick, boss. Most of the time, farmers can’t do any proper farming and use any usable winter seeds to plant during winter due to the excessive snow and ice-cold soil that is close enough to be inhospitable for seeds to even grow properly. You can say that it is the season where work is very and most people rely on their stored food to last until winter," Bam said.
"How heavy are we talking here?" Elaina asked further.
"If the snowfall is very heavy, it usually reaches knee deep most of the time for the humans. During that time, we usually vacate our home and move to a higher position to ensure we will not be buried under the snow, but if the snowfall is just light and similar to a drizzle, most of the time, the snow is enough to cover the ground white and the surroundings full of snow," Poe answered Elaina’s question.
’Knee-deep!’ Elaina thought to herself. She didn’t expect to hear that as she didn’t experience knee-deep snow before. The only time she saw a lot of snow was during her first time as the empress. Even at that time, the snow was only enough to cover the grass white from snow, and not everywhere was covered by it. In short, snow is unpredictable here in the Darcero Kingdom and if she wanted to continue to farm, she either needed to do it indoors, or abandon the idea completely and just wait until spring arrived.
Elaina glanced at their current plan and how much work was currently being shouldered by the five. The Feys are proficient in their work but that doesn’t mean they can do all of the work by themselves as they can’t do some of the heavy lifting jobs. Julia can do some basic work on the farm but she isn’t good at it and she needs constant guidance to make her avoid mistakes that would need correction done by the Feys.
It would have been fine if she could do a portion of the work but she is not allowed to do anything and is specifically banned from doing so, making her only a bystander. In short, the farm hands are severely lacking at the moment.
Realizing this, Elaina sighed and looked at everyone.
"Guys, I know you guys do fantastic work on the farm. Julia is also doing a wonderful job albeit she has some mistakes here and there, and you Feys are doing quite well from every sort of job I gave you these past few days. Unfortunately, based on my calculations, everyone’s work is not enough to handle the amount of work currently planned to be done next week. Therefore, I would like to ask you guys a suggestion that I wanted to do to ensure you guys will have a good chance to have an easy time this upcoming Autumn season."
"Boss, are you planning to look for another worker?" Bam asked.
"Are we really going to need a helper for the work, Sis? Do we even have enough funds we can use to use as a wage for their work?" Julia asked.
"We do have enough wage, Julia. I have saved money that is enough to pay our future hired worker. You don’t need to worry about it. We will earn that back on our harvests instead," Elaina gave her reasons.
Julia shrugged after Elaina confirmed there was enough money for a wage. "Well, if it is necessary, then we should hire one. I will welcome an extra hand that can help us in our work here on the farm."
"No problems here either, boss. Farm work is going to be piling up a lot and having an extra pair of hands to help with the work would be a tremendous help already," Bam nodded in agreement.
"Then it is settled, we should put out a notice that we are looking for some helper on the farm. We should ask Marigold if we can post the notice on the board for better coverage," Elaina suggested.
"I will do it personally, Sis. You should go and relax yourself, alright?" Julia said as she stood up from her chair.
"Julia is right, boss. Just leave it to her. As for us, we will ask some of the spirits if there is someone who can help out with formwork. Perhaps you can snag one that will be willing to agree," Bam suggested.
"Much appreciated, both of you. Anyway, the meeting was dismissed. We should reconvene again later once everything is settled down," Elaina smiled as she tidied up the table and gathered the plans she planned out earlier.
The Feys left and were ready to do the work for the day. As for Julia, she returned to her room to get ready as she would be going to the Town Hall and ask for Marigold’s permission. As for Elaina, she questioned the God of Farming if hiring a worker would be considered illegal.
"Hey there, God of Farming, you are listening earlier, right?"
"[This is about finding helpers for the farm, yes?]" the god of Farming asked.
"Yes. Do you agree with my decision to look for helpers at the moment?" Elaina asked.
"[Can’t say it is good or bad. There are benefits and risks of hiring a stranger so you can say I don’t have much bad or good opinion on it. Of course, if you are aware of those risks, and continue, then I think it is all up to you.]" the god of farming nonchalantly answered.
"I already know that. I have experience in hiring people who are from unknown origins here and there back when I was still an empress so I am quite aware of the carried risks. I just wanted to ask for a second opinion."
"[If you are going to do that, you need to properly filter who you will be hiring, Elaina. Some of the humans do not like working with spirits and handling monsters. With your farm being centered on doing that kind of work, you needed to ensure that you would hire someone trustworthy. Make sure to hire someone who has no xenophobia or isn’t discriminatory about these guys.]"
Elaina blinked a few times. She didn’t think about that. She is so used to hiring random people that she forgets that she is not exactly running a business that is working with normal people. They are currently handling other species of spirits.
"I think this is a bit more of a problem huh?" Elaina shook her head. It seems she had to be picky about this.
