Chapter 90: Finally, she’s dead
Grace was relieved by their choice, "You can head back; we will contact you when the suits are—" Grace’s words were interrupted by a loud sound.
"Boom!"
The ground beneath them trembled; Eva felt like the building was about to collapse, and she held onto the table, her heart beating loudly.
Grace sprinted towards the door, her steps unsteady. Before she reached the door, another explosion shook the building—glass shattered, and the force threw them to the ground.
"If this attack continues, I... wouldn’t be able to save the liquids!" Stone shouted as he struggled to protect the liquid with his body.
He could only hope the liquids wouldn’t shatter and pray the lab responsible for creating them wasn’t attacked as well.
"I’ll go check!" Julian volunteered but another attack disrupted his plan—the building tilted under the force of the attack.
They struggled to stabilize themselves, their ears ringing, the room spun as glass shattered and loud screams came from below.
Ethan held Eva and rolled to the side as a huge glass container shattered in the place they were a second ago.
Julian turned his head away with a sigh of relief, then pulled Stone out from beneath the pile of suits.
When the ground stopped trembling beneath them, Grace used the door handle to get on her feet—opening the door a blast of grey smoke poured into the room.
"Cough! We need to leave here. Pack the suits....cough..." Grace ordered, her words interrupted by a loud cough—her eyes stung with the heat of the smoke as she tried to see what was happening through the window.
Through the smoke, she spotted hazy, tiny figures standing outside the building. She couldn’t get a clear view—partly because of the building’s height, and then the next attack struck, stronger and different from before.
"Boom!!!"
The huge shockwaves affected the passersby. They watched with wide eyes as the scientist guild crumpled to the ground with their very eyes.
Across the city, everyone felt the tremor beneath their feet and saw thick grey smoke billowing overhead.
Leo and Aaron saw the smoke rising in the sky, and Grace’s figure flashed through their minds—they hoped for their wife/mother to return safely, unaware that the scientists guild had been bombed to the very ground or they would have gone crazy.
The culprits hid Inside the rocky shield that one of their power users created. The rock shield was removed, and they came out to see the destruction; they were satisfied when they noticed the blood mixed with the crumpled rocks.
’Finally, she’s dead; there’s no way she can escape this attack.’ The leader thought with relief, not a drop of pity for the people he killed just to kill Grace. He turned to his men. ’’Let’s go,’’ he said, ready to report their success.
They nodded and packed the remaining bombs into their cases before entering the bus and driving off, leaving the devastation behind them.
After an hour passed, they stopped in front of a gate; when the guards saw their familiar faces, they did a double-check before letting them through the estate.
Driving through, they passed through rows of mansions, going deeper before coming to a stop in front of the largest mansion at the very end.
They got down from the car and the leader and his men walked into the building. Inside some guards stood to the side while four nobles sat in wait. The leader took charge and reported the successful mission.
’’Are you certain she’s dead?’’ one of the men asked with a gaze filled with fear, upon receiving their nod, he fell back in his seat in relief. The other three weren’t much better but they could mask their emotions better.
The eyes of the noble head flashed; he signalled his guards while he spoke calmly to the team he sent to kill Grace. ’’You’re team will be rewarded handsomely.’’
The leader heard this, and his eyes bloomed with greed, already imagining the gold and women he was going to enjoy tonight, but his happiness was short-lived. Before he and his team could react, a series of attacks was launched swiftly on them.
One had an arrow shot in the forehead, and another was pierced with a dagger in the throat. The leader was shot in the chest, his eyes filled with disbelief as he collapsed to the ground dead.
The other three nobles jumped up in shock. One couldn’t handle the gruesome sight and retched to the side. It all happened so fast, And they weren’t informed on time.
Only the head remained calm under their questioning gazes.
’’We have to clean up the traces of our involvement, or you sure you want Leo’s wrath.’’ At his words, they broke out in cold sweat.
’How could they forget that maniac?’ And the only person holding Leo back was killed by them. They cast grateful eyes to the head.
’’Don’t worry about it, drink some tea to calm your nerves. There are other nobles, he wouldn’t trace this back to us—rest assured.’’ The man said confidently as he poured tea for himself and the rest.
He took a sip, others gulping their tea down, their hands still trembling slightly from earlier. The guards swiftly and efficiently cleared the crime scene.
Once everyone had finished their tea, the head calmly set his cup down. He sighed, then turned to the three men who finally felt the effect of the poison.
’’Clang!’’ One of them stumbled to his feet, his face pale as he realized something was wrong with his body—but it was too late.
His legs weakened,’and blood came out from his nose and eyes, and a sharp pain gripped his chest.
"W-What... give... cough..." another man slurred, black blood spilling from his lips, his eyes wide with the same disbelief the leader had shown. The last man, who had gulped his tea down earlier, couldn’t even speak—his body wracked with silent, agonizing pain.
Mason watched on coldly as they collapsed to the guard. ’’I had to clean up loose ends and you were part of it.’’ He stated calmly under their shocked faces.
They were consumed by regret, wishing they could turn back time and refuse the tea—but it was too late. They breathed their last under Mason’s calm gaze.
’’Clean up their bodies and blame it on their rival nobles,’’ Mason instructed and rose from his feet. A smile curled his lips which escalated to wild laughter.
’’Aahaha...’’ ’Finally, he succeeded in killing Grace; after those years, she stole the administrator head position from him, now it’s his.
Now he could only hold out until next week before he cleaned up the city. But a pained expression crossed his face as he recalled the dead scientists and the destroyed building.
’’Necessary losses have to be made to achieve my goal,"’ he muttered already, setting his sight on the other cities scientist guild.
Confident in his victory, he took out a bottle of wine to drink in celebration of Grace’s death.
