Chapter 59: it’s time to retire

Sweat slid down their cheeks as their eyes darted to the closed door, retreating from the hostile gazes.

’’We don’t have air to waste on imprisonment. Death is the only penalty.’’ Grace’s tone remained emotionless as she spoke.

’’You can’t do that!’’ a panicked shout left one of their lips. The others nodded as they moved secretly to the door.

’’We have the aristocrats backing. You won’t be able to become the leader after the next vote because of your actions.’’ The man half-threatened and pleaded. His body trembled badly from fear as he noticed Grace’s unbothered stare.

Grace’s lazy gaze followed their feet. A yawn nearly escaped her lips. The other administrators frowned, acknowledging the truth of his words.

Those people have the power to control the votes, but remembering who her husband was, their frown resided.

The threat held no weight against someone like her, so they wisely refrained from interfering with Grace’s decision and waited patiently for her response.

But Grace didn’t give much of a response, she picked her stick and swung it towards their fleeing necks. ’’Crack!!’’ that one swing took out six people, their necks caving in, as blood splattered from their mouths and nose.

’’Arghh!’’ the other screamed out in fear, releasing their powers at her as they dashed towards the door. Grace dodged the spikes, water blades, and other attacks calmly.

She moved towards them with a blood-stained stick—the remaining tripped over the door, their hands pulling frantically at the handle.

The weak-willed turned away, unable to stomach Grace’s brutality. The sickening sound of snapped necks echoed through the room.

Blood soaked the ground, trailing through the door and pooling around Grace, while bodies, etched with expressions of horror and pain, lay lifeless.

Grace shook the blood away from her stick, bringing a cloth to wipe it clean before slipping it into her space bag.

’’Where are the five people who choose population reduction.’’ At her words, those five people hiding in the left group shivered, huddling closer to the walls to hide their presence; suddenly, the way parted, showing their figures in the middle.

A muffled scream left their lips, and their old wrinkled face became paler with their heart throbbing loudly and painfully in their chest. ’’I-I made...a mistake. Please don’t kill me...I have grandchildren waiting for me.’’ The man brawled disregarding his dignity as he pleaded for his life.

The others wept, but Grace’s eyes remained calm, her gaze unshaken.

’’I won’t kill you. I don’t want to lose my appetite anymore. Hand over your administrator’s card; it’s time to retire.’’ Grace walked to her seat after saying those words.

Their legs gave out, and they collapsed in relief; their hands paused as they brought out their cards from their space bag. With heavy hearts, they stood up slowly and walked towards the table.

Under the stares of other administrators, they stalled but their sight caught the blood-soaked ground and released their hold on the card. ’It was better than dying,’ they thought, as their will broke.

Dean escorted them out of the door, closing the door. The room settled into a tense silence, their gaze focused on Grace, not knowing her next move or words. And to their relief, Grace discussed the problem at hand.

’’Pass the message across to other cities and dungeon raiders to challenge the dungeon.’’ Grace’s voice rang out through the room as she gave orders.

She turned to the blue-haired man, ’’Stop your current research for now and focus on extracting the uses of these plants.’’ The man nodded and took the plants carefully from Dean.

’’And lastly.’’ Grace’s expression turned serious as she faced Dean. He sat up straighter under her gaze. ’’Your scientist guild are in charge of creating a functioning safety suit. We are challenging the surface above.’’ Her calm words caused waves in their heart.

’’Yes, Mrs Grace.’’

Grace hummed and got up from her seat. ’’This meeting comes to an end.’’ The rest stood at her words; they watched her leaving back, and some fell heavily on their chest. They felt like they were about to suffocate in her presence.

Their old faces had been fully lost around her and they wondered how their grandchildren would react when they saw their pathetic behavior. They shuddered at that thought and stood up to carry out her orders.

Throughout the day, letters were sent through moving trains to other cities, each filled with words that changed the course of humanity.

The administrators sent their staff to spread the information about the beast eggs, by word of mouth or fur-written words pasted on every popular area around the city.

While the city buzzed with activity, Eva stirred, trying to turn over but a force held her in place. She frowned and felt for the source, her hands felt a warm flesh and she drooled.

In her sleepy haze, she mistook his hand for meat, pressing her mouth to his skin, and sinking her teeth in.

Ethan felt a warm tongue wrapped around his hand and his eyes opened.

Searching for the source, he saw Eva’s lowered head and winced slightly when he felt her teeth sink into his flesh. But her warm, soft tongue eased his pain, and his body grew hot.

His blue eyes darkened with arousal, but Eva stopped, realizing the ’meat’ was too tough to chew. A line of drool slid from the corner of her mouth as she opened her eyes, confused by the stubborn ’meat.’

Her eyes widened when she met Ethan’s blue eyes, from the corner of her eyes, she saw the bite mark on his hands, and memories of her chewing flashed through her mind.

’’You’ve woken up, Wife.’’ The last word rolled over his tongue, sending a tingling sensation down her spine.

A smile curled his lips, liking the word very much. He saw her reddened ears and his fingers traced her earlobe and noticed her shiver slightly. Eva’s mind woke up from her daze and she immediately dashed out of bed. ’’Not today. Stop right there, I’m immune to your charms!’’ her raised voice woke Julian.

Julian sat up, the covers slipping down to reveal his toned abs. His black hair fell in loose curls, giving him an untamed look.

’’What were you saying?’’ He drawled lazily, his tone deeper from sleep. Eva’s mouth dropped open, her face flushed from the direct attack.

Ethan sat up, his chiselled body causing Eva’s mind to go blank.

’’Huh...um...uhh...’’ incoherent words left her lips as she swallowed hard.
