CH.639 Wilma’s Birthday
Today was Wilma’s birthday. And as has become a semi-tradition by now, it began with me bringing her breakfast to bed.
Wilma has one of the hardier breakfasts amongst us. The meats she enjoyed changed from day to day, but she always had plenty, along with eggs and either rice or mashed potatoes.
Today I made what is basically a full English breakfast. With stuff like bacon, sausages, eggs, fried rice and mushrooms, and handmade bread rolls and flavored butter. And to top it all off, a giant steak of dragon meat. With a bordelaise sauce that Tinkhec made.
And no, I didn’t make everything. The bacon was cut and cured by Unika, Alice made the sausages, Lua helped with the bread rolls and the mushrooms are grown in the CropFields.
For drinks, she had coffee and a ‘special draconic drink’ Janina made. I know what it is and it isn’t anything bad, it just sounds questionable when put that way.
Wilma didn’t use to drink coffee, as you can basically only get coffee beans from the Empire, but even before I was introduced to Hiro, Lawrence has been bringing some from the Empire as he carries out business there. And after Hiro, we get the best possible price for the stuff, as long as I only import it for our use.
She doesn’t like her coffee black, by the way. She instead likes it with a bit of berry juice mixed in. The juice is made of berries from Smorog, and they are kind of like cranberries. I think that is the closest. I have no clue how Wilma can drink coffee mixed with cranberry juice, but you ask her.
… okay. I know you want to know what the ‘special draconic drink’ is. It is a mana tonic of sorts made by soaking dragon scales in water. This lets the natural mana from the dragon scales to seep into the water and gives it a strange flavor. Yes, it can be used as a mana potion, and if made with scales from an adult dragon, it can be quite potent.
The one Janina brought to Wilma is made from her own scales. Not from her newest batch, those are still all mine, but the tonic is something she made a while ago and has been keeping safe in her cavern.
You can also make dragon vine in a similar fashion, but Janina hasn’t made any of that in a long time, and she said she is saving what she has for a special occasion.
We had the HomeBase part of Wilma’s birthday celebration in the morning, as we were going to head to Smorog in the afternoon.
We had some cake, which wasn’t made by me but Alice and I designed it. Then my monsters made it. It was a multi-tiered cake, each tier showing a different part of metals journey to become a finished metal. The bottom layer had a metal mine, then a refinery, then a foundry and finally a smiths workshop on the top layer. And at the very top, as a sort of centerpiece, a sword made out of sugar candy.
Now that might sound massive, and maybe it is, but HomeBase does have quite a few temporary residents, so the cake might not even last till tomorrow, and if it does, it will be finished tomorrow.
Wilma was quite a big fan of the cake, and she spent some time looking at all the details before cutting into it.
After cake, it was time for presents. I went first this time, because while I have my usual gift for her, I had something custom for her as well.
That something is a smithing apron made of dragon scales. Dragon scales that originate from my own body. It was a bit painful to rip enough of them off for the apron, but unlike true dragons, I don’t molt so I can’t naturally detach my scales.
And no, it didn’t leave me with any bald spots or anything thanks to regeneration.
The apron was fireproof enough to take on a blast of my dragon fire for some time, and it was honestly something you could wear into battle, but of course that isn’t what its intended use is. I just want it to protect Wilma from anything bad that could happen in the Workshop.
From Alice, Wilma received a book on new Metal Magic spells Alice developed with my monsters, with some help from her unique-racial skill. It has spells that would help in the forming of legendary metals, spells that would allow for instant and perfect heat treatment, spells to optimize the repair of nicked blades and so on. A lot of spells that could be done, but were difficult with the currently designed spells that were a thing.
Lua gifted her some Blood Crystals. They are a decently new thing Lua figured out how to make. They are essentially hardened and crystalized blood, but they can actually be used for some cool things. Especially when embedded into blood iron or vampiric steel.
For example, they can hold mana. Not quite as well as magic stones, but still well. They can also boost Blood Magic, and so on. And they are extremely good medium for writing Blood Magic related enchantments to.
Cailie had obtained some Sea Crystals with the help of Varuna. They are ancient magic stones that were used in times before magic stones. They are more like monster cores, crystallized clusters of water attributed mana and miasma. They can even be turned into magic stones, but the process is different from converting a monster core to a magic stone. They are easier to convert, as they don't need the 'stabilization' or 'compression' part. They just convert automatically after being filled with enough mana of their dedicated attribute.
The Sage’s Tower was quite interested when I told them about it, as they believed these element crystals were just monster cores, but luckily my resident ancient being knew they weren’t the same thing.
The reason those crystals are no longer used is because it takes a long time for even just one to form. And they form in difficult to get places. Water crystals form at the bottom of the ocean. Fire stones form inside the earth itself, within the magma, and are sometimes pushed to the surface when a volcano erupts. We did find one in Agunan’s volcano, but just one. Air crystals form in the upper atmosphere, but they burn up or break apart when they fall to the earth, so you have to get them when they are up there. And earth crystals form deep inside the ground. I had actually found a few in the Quarry, but I was like the Sage’s Tower and believed they were just regular monster cores of monsters that died a long time ago.
We’ve yet to figure out if Dark crystals can naturally form, but it is possible they do and we just don’t know where. And for light, we’ve found one already. The one that was at the peak of Stella’s mountain. It was a massive Light crystal, but it was broken apart during her and Unika’s unification evolution. Sure some of it is still there, but a lot of it is in my Storage.
That crystal was also Unika’s gift to Wilma. It did belong to her, even if I was the one holding onto it. And admittedly Wilma had already experimented with the stone and even made some magic staves out of it.
Because of that, Unika also hunted some rare monsters and brought the materials to Wilma. They were nice, but nothing she wouldn’t get by just asking.
Last of us was Janina. She had brought out something else from her hoard. One dragon fang sword to be specific.
It was a very old sword, one Janina herself carried on her hip when she went around the world in a dragon avatar. It was made from the fang and scales of the supreme dragon before her, so I was admittedly extremely jealous of Wilma getting that sword. I would have loved to have something like that.
After the HomeBase celebration, we headed for Smorog. I had contacted Klaus so he knew we were coming. And he has hopefully gotten us permission for something really cool.
Wilma meeting her teacher was a bit awkward since he does look and sound exactly the same as Wilma’s System Support, but that is a small problem as we don’t interact with Klaus all that often. And Wilma didn’t want to change it early on, despite the recommendations.
Our party here began with some dwarven vine, which was more like hard spirit. It was quite strong but still tasted great.
Oh, it might be worth mentioning that I’ve been a Dwarf the whole day and I spent a bunch of time in the morning styling my beard to Wilma’s liking. I’m personally not a big fan of a long beard, but Wilma likes seeing me with it, so for her, I’ll suffer for a day.
… It isn’t actually that bad. If I was a human, it would itch, I feel like, but as a dwarf, it doesn’t bother me. I think dwarves have thicker or less sensitive skin than humans.
Eventually, we got to the special thing I had asked Klaus to prepare for us. We were visiting a certain sword. The indestructible sword of penance, Chandrahas to be specific.
It wasn’t stone during the attack, thank god, as it was held in an eternal crystal. So now we could take a look at it. And yes, I said we as I’ll be analyzing the weapon as well.
Wilma has naturally appraised it before, but back then she didn’t have enough mana to see all the details. Now she does.
But I know what you might ask. How will you get the sword out of the crystal? And if you do get it out, how do you get it back in? You didn’t bring Alice or Lua to help.
Well, I have a little cheat for that. One called Intangibility. Yeah. With the Numeron Code Intangibility, I can just pass through the crystal, take the sword into Storage, and then I can bring it out of Storage outside of the crystal.
That way, we could get more than just the appraisal results for the sword. We could get a good feel for the weight and balance of the sword, and it did feel quite nice.
In terms of quality, it was a really nice sword. Naturally a lot had been focused on the ‘indestructible’ part, but it had a few other tricks.
Like the +2500 strength the sword came with. Yeah. That is quite the boost, and it applies to anyone. … almost.
See, the sword can’t actually be wielded by anyone who has done bad things, or has evil intentions. And the way the sword was able to identify that was a massive mess of spells that were somehow made easy to write. Whomever enchanted the sword was a master at their craft and really went all out on designing the enchants.
It did give me some ideas on how certain enchants could be done. For example, I think I could now make a ‘bloodline’ weapon that can only be wielded by someone, and their future generations. Kind of like the Hero’s armor that can be worn by him, but also his children who carry the ‘Descendant of the Hero’ title.
After we were done observing the sword, I returned it to the eternal crystal with the same trick I got it out, just in reverse.
We decided to stay the night in Smorog, and we were offered the best room in the city's best hotel. It was a large suite clearly meant for Royal or higher ranked noble visitors.
It wasn’t quite the match to HomeBase, but it was really nice.
There, I gave Wilma her second, and third, gift from me. First was my engagement gift in the dwarven style, which for Wilma was a forging hammer. Dwarves give a tool based on the trade of the person they are courting, so a pickaxe for a miner, forging hammer for a smith, sword for a warrior and so on.
The hammer was like Wilma liked, and I made some parts of it out of adamantite to make it unbreakable. It did also hold a magic stone I converted on the side, as I wanted to add it. The magic stone doesn’t actually do anything, just looks cool.
On top of that, I also made Wilma a piece of jewelry that held my self made magic stone. It was a beard clip/ring that she could use when styling her beard, another quite traditional dwarven gift.
And after those two things, Wilma asked for a different kind of gift to end the day. … yeah. You know what I mean. I wasn’t quite sure how soundproof the rooms were, so I set up a Space Magic barrier to make sure no sound escaped the room. We wouldn’t want to bother others, right?
