Chapter 536: The Flower in the Greenhouse, Unaware of the Mortal World’s Suffering

Chapter 536: Chapter 536: The Flower in the Greenhouse, Unaware of the Mortal World’s Suffering

Time flies; ten minutes had already passed.

Josh saw a shabbily-dressed, middle-aged man with messy hair and a skinny figure swiftly approaching.

The two youths next door brightened up at his arrival.

The shorter red-haired guy stood up and waved at the man, calling, "Hey old man, I’m right here!"

Gazing at the obvious greed displayed on his face made Josh feel a sense of repulsion.

His sympathy was already filling up for the frantic middle-aged man, who was visibly corrupted by poverty.

The man held some loose change in his hand, pushing it into the shorter red-haired man’s hand.

"Son, I just gave you more than a hundred dollars yesterday, why do you need more today?"

"Enough with the nonsense!"

The shorter man snatched the money from the middle-aged man’s hand, barking, "Hand it over!"

He counted the money and was upset to see it fell short of two hundred.

The short, red-haired guy was furious. "Damn old man, I asked for two hundred, and you gave me hardly more than a hundred. What do you think I am, a beggar?!"

Speaking of beggars, the man standing across him looked truly like one.

His clothes were ragged, his hair was graying despite just reaching middle-age.

The most pitiful part was his hands. When confronted with his son’s accusations, they helplessly clenched his worn-out clothes.

The man’s face was flushed with embarrassment, his demeanor bearing a kind of indescribable discomfort.

Josh felt unbearable seeing this scene.

He was wondering, was all this fuss really necessary just over two hundred dollars.

He stood up, reaching into his pocket to pull out several hundred-dollar bills.

But just as Josh was about to walk over, both Su Wang and Shen Ran each grabbed one of his arms to stop him.

"Sit down!"

Su Wang’s tone was stern, with a chilling glint in his eyes.

This savage demeanor of his reminded Josh of that day in Mr. Jiang’s office.

This guy Su Wang was merciless, he would hit right where it hurts, showing no mercy.

Jos swallowed hard and, clutching the money, sat down.

Shen Ran turned towards a fuming Josh and nodded, "Look at the people around us."

Josh looked around, baffled and irked, squinting at their surroundings.

He noticed that most people around them were oblivious to the confrontation between the redhead and the middle-aged man.

They heartily enjoyed their kebabs, drank generously, full of laughter and joy.

It seemed as if the goings-on between the redhead gang was a common sight for them, hardly worth their attention.

Josh seemed to understand something, yet at the same time, he felt confused.

The short red-haired guy searched the middle-aged man again, finding a few more coins.

He snorted coldly and, cursing under his breath, left with the taller youth.

They just left, and nobody paid the bill.

Seeing this, the restaurant owner rushed out.

"Bastards, come running without any shame, you’re courting death!"

Seeing the middle-aged man still standing there, the better shop owner viciously grabbed his hand, "Your son left without paying, now you pay!"

"I’m sorry, sorry..."

The middle-aged man kept apologizing to the stall owner.

"What use is an apology? Pay up!"

The owner’s face twitched with anger, his voice boomed.

The middle-aged man frantically searched his pockets, only to find them empty; his son had taken the last of his money.

He didn’t even have a single dollar left on him now.

Under the streetlight, his rough, chapped hands desperately clutched the edges of his shirt.

The man’s distressed and shameful demeanor made onlookers feel a shared sense of humiliation, as if they wanted to shrink into the ground with him.

Apologetically, he said, "I’m sorry, I don’t have that much money."

The boss sneered, pushing him away. "If you don’t have the money, call someone from your house to bring it!"

From Josh’s perspective, he clearly saw the boss’s spittle spray onto the man’s face as he spoke.

The middle-aged man staggered backward a few steps, his body trembling.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out an old, battered mobile.

The phone was a model from over a decade ago, its faded surface scratched and worn.

With unsteady hands, the man tried to dial a number on his phone, but after hesitating for a long time, he was unable to make the call in the end.

He glanced at the restaurant boss who was still waiting for his money, then slowly lowered his phone.

The middle-aged man’s eyes burnt red, as if he viewed his current situation as a dead end.

The despair emanating from his eyes deeply shook Josh.

Standing in front of the raging owner, he looked like a fish on a chopping board, surrounded by a thick scent of despair.

When the boss saw him put down his phone, he scoffed, "It’s a few tens of dollars, and at your age, you can’t even fork out this much?"

"You can’t possibly not have a single family member or relative, can you?"

"Having lived to your age, what a total waste!"

"If you don’t have money, you’re not leaving today!"

Each word from the boss was like a knife carving deep into the man’s flesh.

Josh’s face was stiff, he didn’t know what to say.

A meal that was just tens of dollars; he couldn’t believe that in this day and age, there were people who couldn’t even afford that.

In truth, it wasn’t that the middle-aged man couldn’t afford it. It was that he had given all his money to his son.

Did the short red-haired guy, when he left, know what his old father would have to face?

He knew, indeed.

Yet, he still chose to leave.

Josh’s eyebrows furrowed deeply, his forehead creased.

Su Wang placed his hand on his shoulder, his voice deep, "This elderly man is the sole breadwinner of his family. Who can he call then?

In West City, kinship may be precious, but it’s rare. It’s not uncommon for people to turn heartless when money is involved."

Josh’s lips trembled, "But...it’s only tens of dollars."

He was unable to understand or accept it.

Su Wang laughed. He said casually, "In West City, tens of dollars could be enough to sustain an adult for a month."

"That...that’s impossible!" Josh retorted without thinking.

This claim simply couldn’t be true.

All the days he had spent in West City, even though he was spending minimal amounts under Su Wang’s management, he had already used more than a thousand.

Compared to his past life, this was already unbearably difficult.

But now, Su Wang was telling him that there were lives even harder than this.

"You’re like a caged bird, never having experienced real hardship, never witnessing the sorrows in the Mortal World."

Su Wang’s eyes revealed a complex light, it was unclear if he was sighing or being envious.

He patted Josh’s shoulder, grabbed his phone from the table, and walked over to the boss.

Just as Josh thought he was going to help the middle-aged man, Su Wang arrogantly pulled a few red bills from his pocket and threw them at the restaurant owner.

He bossed-around, "Get me the change, and hurry up! I don’t have all day!"

"Wang bro, alright, I’ll get you the change right away!"

The boss was all smiles as he received the money, then turned around and jogged off.

He had not run far when he abruptly turned around.

The boss glared at the middle-aged man standing by Su Wang, warning him, "Don’t run away! I know where you live, and this matter isn’t over!"

The middle-aged man stood hesitant, his aged face reflecting utter confusion.

Su Wang glanced at him and chuckled softly.

He brushed past the middle-aged man, heading back to where Josh, Shen Ran, and Li Zilan were sitting.

Just as Su Wang brushed past the middle-aged man, his phone fell out of his pocket.
