Chapter 417: Chapter 417: Qiao Nanyuan Causes Trouble, Summoning the Envoy of Malevolent Deities

Li Manning knew she was no match for Qin Ruan, but she was not willing to admit defeat.

She had been given hope, a glimpse of dawn, only to be let down again.

Her waiting had amounted to nothing, and her disappointment had turned into resentment.

Li Manning’s bloodshot eyes brimmed with accusation as she glared at Qin Ruan, "But you promised to help me find Xiaobao!"

Qin Ruan cast her a sidelong glance, her voice slow and deep. "I didn’t know about Maoshan Sect’s rules previously, but just because I can’t let Uncle Qiao take action doesn’t mean I won’t help you find Xiaobao."

Her words soothed Li Manning, and the red glow in her eyes gradually dissipated. "Really?" she asked.

"I don’t go back on my word."

The murderous aura around Li Manning slowly receded.

Qiao Nanyuan stepped forward and said to Li Manning, "Tell me your son’s birth date by the Chinese zodiac."

"Uncle Qiao?" Qin Ruan turned around, looking at him in surprise.

Qiao Nanyuan reassured, "It’s all right; this isn’t assisting in wrongdoing. Once or twice won’t do any harm."

Qin Ruan’s brows furrowed in worry, "Are you sure?"

"Don’t worry."

Li Manning hurriedly rattled off Xiaobao’s birth details.

Qiao Nanyuan turned to Qiao Jiu and instructed, "Draw the curtains."

"Yes!"

Qiao Jiu sprinted to pull the curtains covering the floor-to-ceiling windows, then shut the dining room door, blocking out the light on the way.

After running around a few times, the room plunged into darkness.

Qiao Nanyuan’s voice rang out in the darkness, "Light a candle in the southeast corner."

"Got it, master!" Qiao Jiu’s voice echoed from afar.

Soon, flickering light shone from the southeast corner.

In the darkness, Lin Hao stood closely behind Qin Ruan. His tall figure was slightly bent, conveying a protective stance.

Since entering the room, the things he had seen and heard had thoroughly shocked him.

It was horrifying, hair-raising, and absolutely bizarre!

Who could tell him what on earth was happening?

Lin Hao, who had always been fearless, could only hide behind Qin Ruan in the dark.

Sensing his unease and nervousness, Qin Ruan turned and fixed her bright, black eyes on Lin Hao. "Are you afraid?" she inquired.

Lin Hao gulped, his voice hoarse. "Qin Xiaowu, what on earth are you doing?"

A glimmer of amusement shone behind Qin Ruan’s profound eyes. She giggled softly. "Obviously, we’re summoning a spirit."

"Are you serious?!" Lin Hao’s voice jumped in incredulity.

Before Qin Ruan could reply, Qiao Nanyuan had already sprung into action.

He bowed in four directions, then inserted the incense he had lit into the censer held up by Qiao Jiu.

Qiao Jiu stood there without moving, her face grave.

Qiao Nanyuan pulled out something white from his pocket and began to scatter it on the ground. Moving in a southeast-to-northwest direction, he spread the granules as he walked.

At that moment, Qiao Jiu began chanting, "Heaven and Earth spirits, Yin and Yang realms behold the puppet spirit, we seek the true spirit today, and request help from all directions to reveal the true spirit speedily. Obey the decree of the Great Supreme Elder as swiftly as law!"

Right as she finished, Qiao Nanyuan began to chant Xiaobao’s birth details and repeated his name.

After one round, Qin Ruan noticed that he had been scattering ordinary rice on the ground.

As Qiao Nanyuan completed one round without anything unusual happening, he continued to walk and chant Xiaobao’s name.

As he was halfway through his second round, something strange happened.

A small, frail figure appeared, following closely behind Qiao Nanyuan and tracing the path of the scattered rice.

Even Lin Hao, the only average person present, could see the shadowy figure.

"Qin, Qin Xiaowu, what is th..." he began, but his words were muffled when Qin Ruan covered his mouth.

She leaned in close to his ear and whispered a warning, "Shut up, don’t make a sound and startle it."

Lin Hao’s eyes bulged wide open, revealing his fear and panic.

He watched, wide-eyed and horrified, as a small figure emerged, trailing behind Qiao Nanyuan.

Perhaps because he had made a noise, the entity fixed its ruthless, evil eyes on him, as though it wanted to devour him.

Lin Hao dared not even breathe loudly, he simply stared back at the small puppet spirit in terror.

Qin Ruan turned around, her cold eyes calmly watching the summoned puppet spirit.

It seemed to fear Qin Ruan, and it floated away from the pathway marked with rice, retreating into the darkness.

Seeing it about to flee, Qin Ruan frowned and reached out to grab it.

However, Qiao Nanyuan was quicker. Just as the puppet spirit was about to disappear in the dark, he used the Maoshan Sect’s treasured Bind Immortal Ropes to bind it.

A shrill scream echoed through the spacious living room, its sharpness almost piercing their eardrums.

Qiao Nanyuan strode towards the puppet spirit, barking, "Qiao Jiu, turn on the light!"

"Yes, Master!"

The lights in the living room flickered on, and everyone got a clear view of the scene in the southeast corner.

A weird-looking puppet spirit, bound by the Bind Immortal Ropes, struggled violently, continually shrieking and howling.

Upon seeing the true face of the puppet spirit, Li Manning stood frozen in place, unable to react for a long time.

Her son had been an adorable child with a charming, delicate appearance.

The puppet spirit in front of her, however, didn’t resemble a human at all. It screamed and roared, revealing a mouthful of small, sharp teeth that was utterly terrifying to behold.

She was supposed to reclaim the spirit of her son Xiaobao, not a little monster.

Just as Qiao Nanyuan reached the puppet spirit, two figures wielding dark, chilling energy appeared out of thin air.

"Who dares to summon souls from Hell!" they demanded.

The two envoys from the Netherworld fixed their sinister gazes on Qiao Nanyuan, their soul-locking chains poised to strike.

They seemed ready to drag Qiao Nanyuan into Hell if he answered unsatisfactorily.

Qiao Nanyuan was taken aback. He was only helping a female ghost summon the lingering spirit of her son. He had no idea why this would result in summoning envoys from the Netherworld.

This... Even their ancestors wouldn’t have been capable of summoning officers from the Netherworld.

Qiao Nanyuan was terrified. He pressed his hands together in a fists and salutes gesture and bowed slightly to the two envoys. "I am a disciple of the Maoshan Sect. Today, I was summoning a small puppet spirit. I had no idea it was a spirit from the Netherworld. I beg for your forgiveness."

"So you think just saying sorry will make up for it?!"

The envoy on the left glared at Qiao Nanyuan with dissatisfaction, clearly not so easily dismissed, "We guard countless spirits in the Netherworld. Every trip up here hinders our duties and incurs punishment!

"How do you expect us to explain to our superiors when you keep disrupting the order of the Netherworld? If you continue to summon souls from the Netherworld, you might as well take a trip with us to apologize to the Underworld King in person!"

Qiao Nanyuan’s lips pressed into a tight line and his face was rigid, clearly intimidated by the envoys’ threats.

He knew his abilities, and he knew that he couldn’t possibly have summoned spirits from the Netherworld, let alone alerting the Netherworld’s officers.

Looking at the small puppet spirit bound by the Bind Immortal Ropes, he realized that indeed, this creature had crawled its way up from the Netherworld.

It looked like he truly had run into trouble this time.

As he was considering possible escape plans, Qin Ruan stepped forward.
