Chapter 1226: Chapter 1226: The Little Fox Is Heartbroken, The Young Master Ignores Her
Transformed into a human form and lying on the ground, the little fox flashed a toothy grin at Miss Liu, her teeth bared as she dragged the woman out from under the bed.
She pointed at the young master Huo on the bed and said to Miss Liu, with her mouth gagged, with a domineering yet childish tone, "He is mine; I won’t let you take him. Leave, or I will hide you away forever."
The little fox had been very angry earlier; she ran out of the house upon seeing the wedding procession return, and plunged into the eight-bearer bridal sedan, transforming into human form upon laying eyes on Miss Liu.
The four years of nurturing had deeply imprinted the ownership she felt for young master Huo in her bones and blood; he occupied an important place in the recesses of her heart.
In the little fox’s mind, the serene and comfortable life that belonged to her did not allow anyone else to share.
Miss Liu had witnessed the transformation of the little fox. She was terrified, her eyes filled with panic, her face a portrait of fright.
Hearing the other party would let her go, Miss Liu immediately nodded vigorously at the ethereally beautiful little fox in front of her, who seemed as a celestial maiden descending to the Mortal World, pure and unworldly.
Seeing this, the little fox untied her and chased her out of the room.
Looking like a smug and spoiled victor, her heart filled with joy, the smile on her face gradually became resplendent.
However, when she turned back to see young master Huo lying on the wedding bed, her smile vanished. He had opened his serene eyes at an unknown time.
His clear and attractive eyes, under the illumination of the dragon-and-phoenix candles, appeared handsome and warm.
The little fox was startled. She stood rooted to the spot, her exquisite and captivatingly beautiful face betraying her panic.
Young master Huo squinted his eyes, appraising the outstandingly beautiful girl before him, who was so lovely it seemed she was not of this world.
His gaze fixed on the faint flame-red mark on her forehead, feeling a sense of familiarity, his heart felt as if it was being tightly grasped.
The pallid face of young master Huo, sickly and wan, turned even whiter. He coughed softly and tentatively called out, "Xiaobai?"
The little fox, dressed in a fiery red bridal gown, lit up at his words and immediately nodded.
She rushed to the bed and clung tightly to young master Huo’s waist, making a pitiful whimpering sound.
Young master Huo had not expected that this girl really was Xiaobai, the fox he had raised.
It was by the flame pattern on her forehead, which was the same as the one on Xiaobai’s tail, identical to the patterns on the brows of the girl before him.
Young master Huo looked down at the girl sprawled on top of him, the surprise in his eyes faded, replaced by a soft smile.
He coughed softly, pretending to be perplexed, and asked, "Why did you chase Miss Liu away? And why are you dressed in a bridal gown that doesn’t fit?"
He had clearly seen the little fox chasing Miss Liu away a moment before, so his question was deliberately meant to trouble her.
Yet the little fox didn’t understand these worldly etiquettes; she lifted her head, her eyes misty with tears, and said, "She cannot marry you; you are mine."
Young master Huo’s gaze turned deep and complex as he observed the turmoil in the little fox’s eyes.
Silent for a long while, he finally asked slowly, "Are you a demon?"
"I don’t know," replied the little fox, confused as she shook her head, then affirmed aloud, "I am now a person, just like you!"
Young master Huo felt his body at its limit. He gently stroked the girl’s hair as he would pet a little fox.
His voice was deep and husky, weak yet forceful as he said, "I am dying, and besides, demons and humans tread separate paths. Even if you were human, I still wouldn’t marry you."
The little fox’s delicate eyebrows furrowed tightly, her face expressing confusion and anger, "Then why were you marrying Miss Liu?"
Young master Huo paused in his stroking, and after a moment, he explained in complex tones. "I have no affection or obligation to her. Miss Liu wanted to gain protection under the guise of being my widow. Our arrangement was mutually exploitative; it was to ease my father’s concerns, and she could get what the Liu Family wanted. Neither of us owed the other anything."
The little fox still didn’t quite understand and complained with a saddened face, "But it was I who went through the wedding ceremony with you, not her. We have paid respects to heaven and earth and are already married."
Young master Huo then recalled the impropriety of the ceremony. He had seen Miss Liu before, and she was not as tall as the stunning girl before him.
If they had paid their respects to heaven and earth, even if the little fox was a stand-in for someone else, they would indeed be considered married.
Young Master Huo had a headache, lifting his weary arm, and pressed his hand to his brow.
He looked down at the little fox in front of him, whose bright eyes and nation-toppling, city-stealing beauty shone. Her pale, thin lips parted slightly, "I won’t make it until dawn, why put yourself through this?"
"I don’t care, even if it’s just for an hour, a stick of incense, a single breath, you cannot marry another woman."
Xiaobai didn’t understand human emotions, her obsessive possessiveness made it impossible for her to let go of Young Master Huo.
The county magistrate eavesdropping outside had an expression as if he had been struck by lightning.
Miss Liu ran out but didn’t leave, instead she went straight to the county magistrate to tattle, only after recounting the events did she leave the residence, to find her father and bring people to support the scene.
For the past few years, she’d clung to Young Master Huo not for his outstanding appearance, but for the fame he’d garnered among the nobility of the Capital City.
How could Miss Liu possibly be content when a little demon fox suddenly jumped in and stole her thunder?
The county magistrate, hearing that his legitimate son wouldn’t last till dawn, had tears streaming down his face as he staggered away.
Noises came from the room again, "Xiaobai, could you check if it’s snowing outside?"
"Do you like snow?"
The little fox stood up and walked to the window, the night sky was full of stars, showing no signs of snow.
"Before leaving, I want to see all of creation, and if I could be accompanied by snow, that would indeed match the scene at this moment."
Xiaobai couldn’t understand, but she knew the young master wanted to see the snow.
Her hand stretched uncontrollably out of the window, silently chanting for snow, praying for it to fall quickly, so the young master could witness the snowscape, fulfilling his wish for the moment.
Whether it was the result of her prayers or the weather being truly capricious, specks of snow started to fall from the sky.
Tiny, chaotic snowflakes landed on the ground, and in the blink of an eye, they grew larger, fluttering like dandelion seeds across the sky.
In Xiaobai’s seductively bewitching eyes appeared a flash of surprise, she turned back to look at Young Master Huo, who was lying in bed but found that he had sat up and was facing her direction, asleep at the edge of the bed.
Xiaobai glanced at the snowflakes falling outside the window, then looked back at Young Master Huo, and decided to wake him up to enjoy the snowscape.
She called out softly, "Young Master, look, it’s snowing outside!"
No one responded to her.
Xiaobai blinked her big eyes, walked to the bed, and called again, "Young Master?"
Still no response.
Xiaobai began to panic, reaching out to push Young Master Huo.
His body slowly leaned back and fell straight onto the bed with a dull thud.
Uncertainty appeared in Xiaobai’s eyes, she stepped forward and leaned over Young Master Huo to check his breathing.
Her fingers felt nothing, and the warmth from the body beneath her also began to slowly fade away.
Xiaobai gripped Young Master Huo’s hand tightly, muttering to herself, "Why aren’t you paying attention to me? I want to eat chicken legs today, can you get up and have someone fetch them from the kitchen for me? I hate Miss Liu, she wants to compete with me for you, I don’t want you supporting others, having me is enough for you. Are you angry with me, which is why you’re ignoring me? Should I bring Miss Liu over, would that be good?"
Xiaobai said a lot, but her Young Master Huo’s body was growing cold, and he still did not respond to her.
Xiaobai was tired, she laid the now breathless Young Master Huo down flat, returning to her original form as she lay beside him on the pillow, making infant-like whimpers, her voice mournful as if she were crying.
"Bang!"
The door was kicked open forcefully, a group of servants dressed in black stood outside, they surrounded Liu Yu and Miss Liu as they entered.
