Chapter 1225: Chapter 1225: The Seriously Ill Young Master Huo Gets Married at the Wedding Ceremony
Young Master Huo lay critically ill in bed, and the Huo Family residence was filled with trepidation. The physicians entering and exiting daily bore somber expressions, shaking their heads at the hopeful county official.
Although they said nothing, their actions conveyed a unanimous message: prepare for the aftermath.
The county official understood their unspoken meaning clearly. Overnight, his hair turned to frost, as he visibly aged more than a decade.
Xiaobai, the fox, had refused to eat or drink since Young Master Huo fell ill, laying by his pillow. The sounds emanating from its mouth, initially downtrodden, shifted to an unmistakable grieving that brought the household servants to tears.
Animals have a spiritual sense, and they all believed that the young master would not survive this ordeal.
The turning point came on the third day.
The Emperor of Daqian sent over ten physicians from the Imperial Medical Institute, all to save Young Master Huo’s life.
Naturally, the medical skills of the Palace physicians were incomparable to those of the common doctors; yet, all they could do was postpone Young Master Huo’s death—they couldn’t pull back the foot that had already stepped into the Ghost Gate.
Young Master Huo had always been frail, with each day lived sapping his vital energy.
He seemed fine normally, but his body temperature was much lower than that of a healthy person. Once ill, he would not only cough blood but also take longer to recover than an average person.
After the Imperial physicians diagnosed his pulse and prescribed medicine, the Huo residence servants fed it to Young Master Huo. That very night, he opened his eyes.
When Young Master Huo opened his eyes, he saw Xiaobai by his pillow, with sorrowful eyes. He raised his feeble arm gently caressing its lusterless fur.
Sensing the familiar touch, Xiaobai immediately raised its head, its mournful fox eyes shining with anthropomorphic surprise.
It nuzzled its head against Young Master Huo’s excessively pale, bloodless, and handsome face.
Whimpers escaped from its mouth, resembling cries intertwined with coquettish pleadings.
Xiaobai’s movements alerted the household servants, and upon seeing the young master awake, one of them exclaimed, "Imperial Physician! He’s awake! Our young master is awake!"
Very soon, the Imperial physicians crowded into the rather spacious master bedroom. Their presence made the room feel somewhat cramped.
In the time it took for an incense stick to burn, each physician took their turn checking Young Master Huo’s pulse, all wearing serious expressions with not a hint of joy.
Young Master Huo’s health was fast deteriorating, at the end of his strength, unlikely to live more than ten days.
Upon receiving this dreadful news, the county official fainted from excessive grief. When he regained consciousness, the servants below reported that Mr. Liu had come to visit, claiming an urgent matter.
Initially unwilling to meet Mr. Liu, preferring to see his gravely ill son, the county official changed his mind after hearing the servant’s next words.
The servant mentioned merely that Mr. Liu’s visit concerned the young master.
The county official then went to the front hall to meet the long-waiting Mr. Liu.
Upon meeting, Mr. Liu declared his intentions, willing to offer his daughter’s hand to enter the Huo Family to bring joy and ward off the unfortunate fate for Young Master Huo, even if it meant being a concubine.
Mr. Liu’s posture was humbly accommodating, considering everything for the county official’s son.
Moved by Mr. Liu’s gesture, the county official, who felt as though he had aged over a decade and wished he could suffer in place of his son, agreed on the spot to have Miss Liu as his son’s principal wife, albeit with a simple wedding to be performed within three days.
Mr. Liu assured him immediately that there would be no issues, even if the wedding took place that night his daughter would be willing.
Thus, the joyous celebration for Young Master Huo was settled.
By the time the person involved found out, it was already the day of the wedding.
Huo Gongzi, knowing his days were numbered, did not voice opposition to the marriage, despite his heart’s aversion.
As a son, with only a few days to live, why should he sadden and trouble his family?
Huo Gongzi, supported by a servant, rose from the bed. He was bathed and dressed by several servants in auspicious wedding attire. Spiritual Wisdom’s little fox, Xiaobai, lay in a corner of the bed, watching this scene, her eyes brimming with grievance.
She understood what marriage meant and knew that a mistress would soon appear in the household, and she was very, very unhappy about it.
An unfamiliar emotion surged unexpectedly into her heart, causing her great discomfort. It was a mixture of flavors, a thousand sorrows, a myriad of melancholy; it was the mischief of something called jealousy.
The little fox watched Huo Gongzi, his face as fine as jade, his features as delicate as a painting. Dressed in his wedding attire, he seemed to have a better complexion. She felt hot all over; her blood seemed to be boiling, her emotions uncontrollably irritable.
Huo Gongzi glanced down inadvertently and saw Xiaobai trembling on the footstool, worry flashing in his eyes, "Xiaobai?"
"Ow, ow, ow..." Amidst her anger, Xiaobai unexpectedly made a sound like a wolf’s howl.
Huo Gongzi, his complexion pale and showing a fragile beauty, chuckled lightly at her words and got up to walk towards Xiaobai.
As he bent over to pick her up, the little fox darted away in a flash. She stared intently at Huo Gongzi, letting out a distressed whine, then turned and rushed out the door.
Huo Gongzi sighed softly within the room, instructing the servants to find Xiaobai. After a moment of silence, he turned to his personal valet and ordered, "After I’m gone, take good care of Xiaobai. Feed it three meals a day as before. The little creature has a bad temper and is spoiled; if it throws a tantrum, don’t yell at it. Be patient and soothe it, cough cough cough..."
His speech was interrupted by a fit of coughing. Pressing his sleeve against his lips, a sweet, metallic smell of blood surfaced. The crimson sleeve of his wedding attire was stained with blood, but it was undetectable.
As Huo Gongzi lowered his arm, the valet saw the previously pale lips now tinged with a striking color—it was clearly blood.
He cried out in shock, "Young Master!"
Huo Gongzi lifted his hand, signaling him to be quiet and asked weakly, "Did you write down everything I’ve said?"
The valet wiped the tears from his eyes and choked out, "Yes, I’ve got it!"
Outside, the sound of firecrackers went off one after another. The bride had arrived, and the auspicious time for the wedding ceremony was upon them.
However, at that moment, Huo Gongzi’s body wavered as though about to fall, his complexion turning visibly pallid.
The local magistrate entered and, seeing the situation, quickly ordered the servants to carry the young master out for the ceremony.
In this manner, the frail Huo Gongzi, supported by his valet, completed the wedding bows with Miss Liu.
Everything went very smoothly, without any mishaps.
However, in the last part of the ceremony, as he was being led into the bridal chamber, Huo Gongzi happened to look up. By his side, beneath the red bridal veil, Miss Liu seemed a bit off, as if she had grown taller.
Before he could ponder further, a weakness in his consciousness, along with a sharp pain in his chest, caused him to faint.
Deep into the night...
In the bridal room, the dragon and phoenix candles burned, and Huo Gongzi lay on the bed breathing evenly. At the foot of the bed, a petite figure in wedding attire rested her head on the bedside, looking sleepy and tired.
Then, a noise came from under the bed.
The person leaning on the bed, about to drift off, immediately sat up. She lifted the red veil and looked first at Huo Gongzi, ensuring she hadn’t woken him, and then got out of bed to kneel on the floor and peer under the bed.
Miss Liu, dressed only in her thin undergarment, was tied up and tossed under the bed, her exquisite makeup cried into a face full of tears.
