Chapter 1209: Chapter 1209: Girl, your crying is breaking my heart
Anuan, cradled in Qin Ruan’s arms, stretched out her chubby little hand, wavering uncertainly as it swung around and caught a few fingers in her mother’s hair, cooing a milky babble.
Qin Ruan couldn’t decipher what her daughter was trying to express and, turning to the servant standing by, she lifted her chin slightly, "Is the formula ready?"
The servant immediately nodded, "It’s ready, it’s being warmed, I’ll get it now!"
The servant quickly brought the bottle over and presented it to Qin Ruan with both hands.
Qin Ruan took the bottle, sat down on the bed holding her child, and brought the bottle to her daughter’s lips.
She had thought her daughter would refuse to drink milk again, but Anuan, with her not-so-dexterous little hands, took hold of the bottle and drank greedily, a look of satisfaction on her little face.
Huo Yao tiptoed and stretched her neck to watch her sister, delighted to see her drinking milk, "Sister is drinking milk!"
Huo Anqi’s little mouth was tightly closed, a smile as bright as Huo Yao’s on her face.
Both brothers had watched nervously as the wet nurse and servants tried everything without success to get their sister to drink milk, fearing she would starve.
Now seeing Anuan drink milk without fussing or throwing a tantrum, their joy was as if they’d experienced the joy of bringing life into the world all over again.
Qin Ruan also breathed a sigh of relief and fed Anuan a full hundred milliliters of milk before stopping.
The Little Princess, having had her fill, blinked her shiny black eyes before succumbing to sleepiness and closing them.
Qin Ruan sat by the bed holding her daughter, gazing at the child’s tender face in her arms, lost in thought.
Huo Yao and Huo Anqi sensibly stood by without making a sound to disturb her.
After a while, Qin Ruan stood up holding the child and said to the servant in the room and the wet nurse not far away, "I will take Anuan to the master bedroom. When it’s time for her next feeding, come and get her."
Both the servant and the wet nurse immediately replied, "Yes, Madam—"
This time Qin Ruan’s childbirth was possibly due to great emotional turmoil, and she had no milk. The Huo family had hired professionally trained wet nurses and servants to care for the child.
With their assistance, Qin Ruan was much relieved and could spend more time caring for Huo Yunjiao.
She lowered her gaze to Huo Yao and Huo Anqi standing before her and asked, "Do Ayao and Anqi want to come along?"
The two children chorused in unison, "Yes!"
Holding her sleeping daughter, Qin Ruan led Huo Yao and Huo Anqi, her two little shadows, back to the master bedroom.
Entering the room, the three of them deliberately tread lightly, coming to stand before the man lying in bed, his frame gaunt.
Qin Ruan glanced at the sweetly sleeping child in her arms, then at the deeply sleeping Elder Master on the bed, and gently laid Anuan beside him.
Huo Yao and Huo Anqi climbed onto the big bed, kneeling beside the unconscious Huo Yunjiao, the two children gazing eagerly at their father, their faces showing devotion and concern.
Qin Ruan fetched nail-clipping tools and sat beside the bed, holding Huo Yunjiao’s hand to trim his nails.
All five family members were on the bed, yet the room was silent.
It was a rare moment of warmth, but filled with sadness and restraint.
"Mommy, sister woke up."
Huo Anqi suddenly spoke up, interrupting Qin Ruan who was trimming nails.
She raised her gaze to look at Anuan who lay beside the Elder Master, the little girl staring straight at Huo Yunjiao’s profile with her shiny black eyes.
The corners of Qin Ruan’s mouth curved into a pale smile as she saw her daughter was quiet and resumed trimming nails.
Huo Yao and Huo Anqi exchanged a look, envious of their sister’s proximity to their father. They moved closer to Huo Yunjiao, one lying beside him and the other hugging his thigh.
Surrounded by the three children, Huo Yunjiao’s closed eyes flickered slightly.
Apart from Anuan who was staring at him, no one else noticed.
"Wah!"
Anuan’s babble came from her mouth, her small arm waving out from beneath the blanket.
Qin Ruan watched Huo Yunjiao’s neatly trimmed nails, put away her tools, and on hearing her daughter’s sound, looked up.
Anuan’s flailing arm was reaching out towards the pale and handsome face of the Elder Master.
She didn’t even have time to hesitate before grasping her daughter’s chubby hand and whispered softly, "Daddy is sleeping now, Anuan should be quiet, okay?"
She lifted the blanket, ready to pick up her daughter, when the corner of her eye caught a sight that made her pupils dilate with shock.
Qin Ruan’s hand, which supported the nape of her daughter’s neck, lost its strength as she widened her eyes and stared at Huo Yunjiao’s handsome and cold features.
Just now, she thought she saw grandfather’s eyelids flicker.
She set her daughter down, and without even taking off her shoes, she climbed onto the bed and drew close to the face she had cleaned just an hour ago, watching unblinkingly, afraid to miss anything.
Huo Yao and Huo Anqi, hearing the movement, also scrambled up.
The two children knelt on the bed, puzzled, watching Qin Ruan sprawled over their father.
Huo Yao’s delicate eyebrows knit together slightly, "Mom?"
Without lifting her head, Qin Ruan’s voice shook, "Ayao, Anqi, come quickly and see your father, is he about to wake up? I just saw his eyelid move."
Upon hearing this, Huo Yao and Huo Anqi immediately crawled to the head of the bed, their bright, excited eyes fixed on Huo Yunjiao.
Under the watchful eyes of mother and children, along with Anuan’s bright, puzzled gaze, Huo Yunjiao’s tightly closed eyes flickered once more.
Huo Yao’s eyes widened, "It’s true!"
Huo Anqi’s voice was hardly able to contain his excitement, "Father is waking up!"
Anuan followed the voice of her brothers, "Wah—"
Only Qin Ruan’s body shook violently; eyes that had long been sore were once again moist.
She stretched out her trembling hand and gently touched Huo Yunjiao’s cool cheek, the other hand holding his firmly.
Qin Ruan, struggling to suppress the sob in her throat, whispered near Huo Yunjiao’s ear, "Grandfather, are you going to wake up? Open your eyes and look at me; our daughter is lying beside you, she’s still waiting for you to name her, Ayao and Anqi are also longing for you to wake up, grandfather, won’t you open your eyes and look at us?"
Her hopeful calls did not elicit any response from the man beneath her.
Everything that had just happened seemed like an illusion.
Intense disappointment enveloped Qin Ruan, as tears streamed from the corners of her eyes, falling one by one on Huo Yunjiao’s face.
The roller coaster of emotions, from ecstatic joy to profound sorrow, caused her body to convulse, and she fell over onto Huo Yunjiao.
The immense letdown after the glimpse of hope was too much for her to bear.
After a while, the piercing cries of Huo Yao and Huo Anqi filled the room.
"Father has opened his eyes!"
"Mom, dad is awake!"
Qin Ruan heard the cries, but she had no strength to get up.
She lay over Huo Yunjiao, utterly limp, vision blurred by tears so that she couldn’t see anything clearly.
Suddenly, a strong arm wrapped around her slender waist, and a hoarse, deep voice resounded by her ear, "Ruanruan, why have you started crying just as I’ve woken up?"
The familiar tender tone reached Qin Ruan’s ears, and her eyes, already filled with tears, now streamed even more uncontrollably.
Her repressed emotions completely collapsed, and she began to sob uncontrollably, venting all the grievances accumulated over the past few months.
Listening to their mother’s crying, Huo Yao and Huo Anqi’s young, dumpling-like faces showed sorrow; Anuan, with her bright, naive eyes, watched her parents embrace tightly, sucking on her finger in innocent oblivion.
In the room, Qin Ruan’s sobbing sounded infinitely heartbreaking.
Apart from the oblivious Anuan, the sorrow in her cries infected the Huo family of father and sons.
Huo Yao reached out his small hand, gently patting Qin Ruan’s waist across Huo Yunjiao, his lips pressed tightly together, unable to hide the sadness in his eyes.
Huo Anqi, holding Huo Yao’s hand, looked at their parents, his face etched with concern.
Listening to the crying of the person in his arms, Huo Yunjiao felt an endless acid soar up from the bottom of his heart, and the intense pain that had spread to his chest also pricked at his nerves.
During these few months of coma, other than the initial month when his consciousness was in turmoil, even though he couldn’t move later, his awareness was very clear; he could sense everything on the outside.
He heard Qin Ruan express her longing for him, knew about her anxiety when facing childbirth alone, and knew that at last, his long-awaited daughter had arrived.
Yet, after all, he had woken too late.
Huo Yunjiao, holding Qin Ruan closely beside him, used his hand, which had regained some strength, to wipe the tears from her face.
His deep gaze settled on Qin Ruan’s pale, haggard features, darkening further, and he advised softly with a voice full of heartache, "Girl, stop crying, your tears are breaking my heart."
