Chapter 955: Chapter 72: Neville’s Strength

"Woo~~~~~~" The loud bugle call pierced through the thin mist of the dawn, spreading far across the wilderness of the early morning, adding a chilly touch to the air. Along with the sound of the bugle, there was also a series of orderly footsteps. Countless feet treading on the ground caused the solid earth to tremble faintly. Listening to the floating bugle and feeling the tremor of the ground, a sense of inexplicable exhilaration rose in everyone’s heart, as though the blood in their chests was boiling and burning.

In the bushes of the wilderness, a few magic wind rabbits stood with their four long ears, poking their heads out from the bushes. Although these timid magical beasts had the strength of Iron Rank and could use Wind-attribute magic to increase their speed, and even release blades of wind between their ears to ambush their enemies in critical moments, they wouldn’t fear ordinary medium or small-sized carnivorous wild beasts. However, it’s in their nature to live in the bushes and burrows all year round, seeking safe places whenever they sense any danger. Now, startled by the loud bugle call, the wary magic wind rabbits quickly burrowed out from their dens in the bushes, looking confusedly in the direction of the sound. But the next moment, they felt the shaking of the ground and their sharp hearing caught the approaching sound of footsteps. The uneasy magic wind rabbits swiftly scurried back into their burrows, only their small heads peeping out, vigilantly watching the humanoid creatures approaching at a run. The magical wind rabbits were highly cautious of such creatures. On this wilderness, there were often similar creatures wielding tools that could fly far and injure them, hunting their kind. Thus, seeing any such beings, hiding was always the best option.

Morning Star Wilderness, this was a wilderness not far from Neville City. The increasingly expanding city had not yet reached this area, and due to the high yield of crops, there wasn’t a large demand for farmland, leaving this land that was not situated along major routes to idle away, gradually becoming a paradise for wild beasts and Lower Rank magical beasts. In the vast expanse of the Yarran World, there are countless such areas, where most Lower Rank adventurers and small mercenary groups often aim to gather materials or complete missions targeting the interiors of such wildernesses.

But today, there were no adventurers or mercenaries in sight on this wilderness. The Neville Federal Parliament had issued a decree to declare this area a forbidden zone for one day, prohibiting any unauthorized personnel from entering, or they would bear the consequences. Not many would be foolish enough to defy this order, not even the most powerful professionals, because everyone knew that today, this wilderness would serve as the site for the Neville Federal Military Parade. Besides the elite of the Federation forces, participants also included powerful beings from various races, making this wilderness the place with the highest concentration of Demigods on the Yarran Continent on this day. All the Demigods and Legendary beings together had the power to annihilate every nation on the continent. Therefore, choosing to barge into the parade at this time would undoubtedly be the most foolish act any sane person could avoid.

Accompanied by the stirring bugle, large groups of infantrymen clad in standard hard leather armor and wielding shields and short swords ran swiftly along a predefined route. These infantrymen, divided into several teams, soon ran to their designated positions and formed neat formations. These soldiers were distinctively equipped, whether it was their hard leather armor, long boots, shields, or short swords, all exuded a faint magical aura—clear signs of enchanted gear. Just by looking at these pieces, one could easily guess their identities—members of Federation Shield, one of Neville’s two most powerful military forces, an army that, despite historically being infantry, could stand toe-to-toe with the Falar Empire’s legions of knights, a force built on the power of wealth.

Every soldier in the Federation Shield, even the lowest-ranking junior sergeant, was issued a full set of enchanted standard equipment, ranging from boots that increased running speed, to belts that reduced the feeling of weight, to hard leather armor that defended against certain piercing and slashing attacks, and small round shields that minimized the impact force and effectively protected against the impact of cavalry and blunt weapons, as well as shortswords enhanced for breaking defenses. Even an ordinary person donned in this gear could face a professional of the Iron Rank head-on without defeat. As for a professional of the Iron Rank wearing it, they could be fully utilized as a soldier of the Bronze Rank. Only the Neville Federation could afford to equip all twenty thousand soldiers of the Federation Shield with such gear. Any other power trying to achieve the same would be driven to bankruptcy.

The units appearing on the Morning Star Wilderness today were the three most elite squads of the Federation Shield. Under the leadership of their officers, these soldiers reached their designated spots and stood quietly in the wilderness, three thousand men turning into as many statues. Each of them remained motionless unless given an order, a testament to their disciplined training.

As the sound of the bugle changed from prolonged to abrupt, as if receiving some signal, another set of synchronized footsteps approached. The troops that entered differed from the Federation Shield; they dressed in lighter gear, wearing tight-fitting soft leather armor and short gloves that exposed all fingers, with nearly man-high longbows slung diagonally on their backs and two quivers of feathers hung at their waists. The equipment of these soldiers was also enchanted, and their bodies were sturdier and their steps swifter than the previous infantry’s. Upon arrival, they did not join the earlier troops but quickly moved into a forest to conceal their tracks.

This unit, also a part of the Federation Shield, was the elite longbow squad known as Wind Hunters, legends claimed that even fleeting winds could not escape their hunt. All their instructors were Upper Rank rangers hired at great expense, and thus, although the personal strength of each member was at most at the Bronze Rank and their fighting capacity had its limits, their archery skills were second to none compared to Upper Rank professionals.

Anyone closely monitoring the situation here would notice that at some unspecified time, perhaps while the Wind Hunters were drawing attention, a team composed purely of Lower Rank mages had silently appeared behind the infantry. This group of two hundred was the second of the Neville Federation’s elite troops and the only organized legion of mages among human forces. Although the Mage Corps was only one thousand strong, with only twenty Upper Rank mages of Silver Rank and above, when the whole corps exerted its full power, it could completely annihilate an army of over ten thousand, with the protection of allied forces.
