Chapter 944: Chapter 61 Catherine’s Concern
"What exactly is wrong with her?" Catherine had noticed a serious problem since their meeting: the priestess’ demeanor was clearly not normal, different from usual. While walking back to the inn, Lina’s face bore an uncontrollable smile, warmly greeting every passerby; she even waved if her hands were free. Although her body language subtly kept her close to Freya, maintaining a certain distance from strangers, this passionate display was enough to make Catherine hardly recognize her. The knight girl, walking last, walked alongside Pannis and quietly asked, "This is quite unusual, isn’t it? Has she found some new book again?"
"Clearly, she’s finally gone completely mad, oh dear." Pannis, clutching his head hit by a random object thrown by Lina, who clearly heard his comment but, in a very good mood, chose not to chase him further. Instead, she shut him up by simply forbidding him from making worse comments. Holding the branch Lina had tossed at him, Pannis complained to Catherine, "See, I told you, this is the proof. She has become truly terrifying now."
"You deserved it," Catherine playfully rolled her eyes at Pannis, snatched the branch he still held as supposed evidence, and tossed it aside, irritably saying, "Now you have no evidence, so answer the question quickly."
"Hey, you must have colluded with her, deliberately destroying the evidence. Where is your sense of justice? What about your knight’s fairness? You’ve completely betrayed the knight’s creed, oh, calm down, calm down, I’ll shut up." Under Catherine’s menacing glance and hand on her sword hilt, Pannis wisely chose to submit, grimacing as he said, "Okay, what was your question just now? Hey, hey, stop it, I remember now, haha, I really do, put away the sword. Well, actually she’s quite normal now, isn’t she? She’s just overly cheerful, that’s all."
"So everything’s going smoothly, then?" After reuniting, the girls, as if they had agreed, did not inquire about Lina’s specific situation, nor did Lina volunteer any explanations. It was just like back in Holy City on Fox Street corner when they encountered Lina returning from helping out at the church; there was not too much concern, not too many questions. Everything was so ordinary and familiar, allowing the priestess to calm her emotions from excitement to tranquility. If the priestess had experienced something less pleasant today, this familiar and mundane atmosphere would provide the best medicine to soothe her heart. Nevertheless, Catherine still couldn’t suppress her worry for her family member and quietly asked Pannis, "Did she meet her sister? How did it go? You were inside for so long; you must have talked a lot."
"Actually, they didn’t say much. For these twin sisters, being empathetic since childhood, once they dropped their mutual guilt, they could re-enter this state. Often, a glance, a gesture, was all it took to completely understand each other’s thoughts. With that, what need was there to express anything through words?" Pannis, finally not fooling around, lazily said, "Don’t worry, her sister, her Archbishop grandfather, and the priestess aunt, none of them are bad people. Of course, neither is she. So, the things that happened before are now just minor episodes in their lives, and it’s not even about forgiving each other anymore, so there’s no need to worry anymore. The reason we stayed inside so long was that we accompanied her to the abandoned library."
"So they really went back there?" Catherine slowly nodded, "We were just guessing that you might have gone to the abandoned library for a look; turns out we were right. How was it, did you find anything in the library?"
"Uh... obviously, there was nothing to harvest, just a bunch of ruins destroyed by fire," Pannis shrugged nonchalantly. "However, I did have quite a harvest myself, at least confirming the existence of her friends and gaining a rough understanding of how exactly her friends exist. I must say, it’s truly an interesting existence. Just like they themselves say, ’They exist, yet they do not exist.’ Well, it’s rather complex, so you’d better ask Lina about it. Even she might not be very clear but her friends could explain it to you. I won’t say much more, I’m lazy."
"Fair enough," Catherine didn’t ask Pannis to continue. She knew very well that Pannis’s reluctance to continue wasn’t really because he was lazy as he claimed, but because explaining further would involve some of Lina’s or her friends’ private matters. Since Pannis had learned these secrets from Lina’s friends, as the trusted party, he needed to honor their trust by keeping their secrets. As a close friend and family member, Catherine understood that pursuing the matter could potentially strain their relationships, a commonsense error that a knight like herself, trained in strict aristocratic interpersonal relations, would not commit. Instead, Catherine simply smiled and changed the subject, "Does her Archbishop grandfather have any opinions about what we’re going to do next?"
"He knows that there are things you simply must persist in, and stopping you would be useless," Pannis said with a wry-face, clearly unhappy or worried about the girls insisting on joining the expedition. Since he couldn’t prevent it, he could only grumble a little then continued, "But Lina managed to secure an accommodation you’d definitely love."
"What kind of accommodation? Are they giving us gold coins for support?" Catherine’s eyes immediately lit up, eagerly asking, "Or are they going to supply us with a lot of materials as support?"
"Don’t joke, their church can barely support itself, just short of having the Archbishop lead a bunch of priests begging in the city. How could they possibly have gold coins and materials for your support?" Pannis rolled his eyes. "However, we can stay at Denia’s Holy Sanctuary for free."
"Hm? Saving a lot on accommodation expenses, that’s great news. I wonder if City Hall can convert our saved lodging fees into gold coins for us? Even if it’s less, it wouldn’t matter," Catherine licked her lips, excitedly saying, "Also, aside from accommodations, the Earth Church will definitely take care of our meals too, right, right, they must."
"You two are enough," Lina, who had been pretending not to hear anything, finally couldn’t take it anymore. A vein throbbed on her forehead as she turned around and snapped, teeth clenched, "No more talking, it’s just too embarrassing."
