Chapter 925: Chapter 42 Archbishop’s Noon Prayer

No church would be without clergy, and especially for a large church, there would inevitably be a warrior group within it as a force to maintain the church’s order and safety. This practice was retained from the era of the War of Gods, representing the will of the Deity and waging war in the mortal realm. The warrior group essentially served as the church’s private army, particularly in those countries where church and state were united, with their guard teams acting with all the functions of a national military. By the Fourth Epoch, the Gods were isolated from the world, and wars gradually ceased, leading to a stable phase of peaceful development. The church’s influence had lessened compared to the Third Epoch. Nevertheless, the warrior groups still existed, and although their scale had reduced significantly, they still consisted predominantly of professionals, and still an undeniably formidable force, such that even in the authoritarian Falar Empire, the churches’ warrior groups could still counterbalance the royal authority.

However, The Church of the Earth Goddess’s warrior group did not possess such mighty strength since the followers of Denia differed from other Deities, and the guardian warriors were chosen from among the most devout professionals. Hence, there were few high-level combatants in the Goddess Church. Despite this, with the Deity’s Divine Power and prestige, it managed to maintain its status as a major church, unchanged for thousands of years.

This could easily be seen as two individuals approached the private building of the Archbishop; the highest leader of such a large church was guarded by merely the lowest-ranked professionals stationed at the door. This was indicative of the overall strength of the guardian warrior group. Moreover, these two young guards looked inexperienced in significant affairs and were initially stunned when they saw Lina approaching. But, when they saw the Sinner’s Mark on Lina’s forehead, they quickly tensed up and their hands reached for their sword hilts, almost drawing their weapons out until Lina deliberately displayed the Earth Praise and the Sacred Book hanging from her waist. Upon seeing these, the two young guards relaxed. Although they had never seen these Sacred Items in person, they had encountered several illustrations in their church education and naturally recognized the Earth Praise, which held the highest position among the Sacred Items. Naturally, they knew that the Earth Praise wouldn’t be controlled by someone it did not recognize. Therefore, having the Earth Praise as a guarantee was more effective and credible than any identity, sufficing to prove that the person before them was not an enemy of the church, but rather one of its most trustworthy members.

"I am a sinner of the church, the holder of this generation’s Earth Praise, Sage Helena," Lina said, removing the Sacred Book and holding it before her, floating in the air around her hands, and smiling serenely at the two guards. "I have been away from the main church hall for several years, working as an adventurer in the City of Knowledge. I am passing through Neville City this time and thought to pay a visit to the Divine Throne. Rest assured, my visit aligns with the will of the Goddess and won’t cause any disruption to the Divine Throne."

"Sage? Helena?" The two guards looked at each other. Although the title of Sage held no actual authority, it carried a high status within the church, and the guards were somewhat familiar with this. As for the name Helena, they felt they must have heard it mentioned in some story, but their memory was too vague to recall. Though they couldn’t remember clearly, anyone holding Sacred Items was as if standing before the Goddess herself, witnessing, and any lies at this moment would be a blasphemy against the Goddess. Therefore, the two guards didn’t doubt Lina’s words and nodded, saying, "The Divine Throne is in prayer. Could you please wait a moment for the prayer to finish before entering?"

"Gentlemen," Lina coughed lightly, looking earnestly at the two guards, asked, "May I know that you two have been serving as guards of the Divine Throne for a while now?"

"Uh, yes," one guard scratched his head and replied, "I have been on duty for about two years, and so has he."

"No wonder," Lina nodded mockingly, "No wonder you can describe the Archbishop’s daily afternoon nap as ’prayer’ so skilfully, keeping various disturbances from disrupting his sleep."

"Oh..." the other guard, looking embarrassed and flustered, glanced at his companion and stammered, "She, she, she knows, what do we do? This time, it really was not my fault, I didn’t say anything!"

"Idiot." The first guard annoyed, patted his head, of course, it was the other person’s head, and he bitterly said, "You fool, haven’t you figured it out yet? Miss Helena already knew about the habits of the Divine Throne, and what does that have to do with you? What’s the meaning of rushing to clear your name? Really stupid. Sorry, Sage Helena, my partner here’s a bit slow in the head; you don’t need to mind what he says, um, since you already know, please come in. Should this gentleman also come in?"

"Yes, he’s coming in too." Lina nodded and said, "He’s my adventure team mate, a partner I can entrust my life to. I hope the Archbishop Grandpa can meet him too, no problem, right?"

"Of course, of course." The two young men nodded vigorously, afraid Lina might think they were reluctant. In reality, a Sage holds no real power and, even if they did, the two as members of the warrior protectors of the church, weren’t governed by anyone other than their leader. Thus, from a professional standpoint, there was no need for them to be so nervous, and their reaction was more a natural response to seeing a pretty and gentle young lady.

Lina clearly understood what the two young men were thinking, rewarding them with a gentle, sweet smile. While the youths were still lost in her smile, she had already linked arms with Pannis and walked into the building. As soon as they entered, they heard a loud booming noise, like the dull sound of thunder inside the room, startling and fearsome.

"You heard it from outside, didn’t you?" Lina sighed, helplessly saying, "I think with your perception, it’s impossible not to hear it."

"Yes." Pannis, holding back his laughter, said, "I heard it from a distance already."

"Sigh." Lina shook her head sadly and said, "I actually don’t understand Grandpa Archbishop’s thoughts. With his snoring this loud, audible through two or three rooms, why does he still naively believe his disguise of napping is perfect, even after being caught multiple times by accident?"

"Old people’s naivety and stubbornness, I guess." Pannis shrugged, "But since he’s sleeping so soundly, it’s okay for us to go in, right?"

"No problem, he’s already used to it." Lina said with a mischievous smile, "Actually, I’ve gotten used to it too." (To be continued.
