Chapter 908: Chapter 25 Alleyway
When everyone emerged from the dark alley onto the other end of a bustling street, each of the four girls had faces flushed bright red. The alley of Sleepless City was far from tranquil; shortly after they entered the alley, they spotted others in a corner. Amidst the gloom, two figures clung tightly together, emitting fierce panting sounds, their vigorous movements heating up the entire lane. Seeming to hear something, the couple in the shadows paused and glanced back at the five silhouettes approaching in the darkness, yet they didn’t show any intention of stopping. Instead, they continued their previous actions as if it were the norm, and one of them even waved at the members of the adventure team, appearing to extend an invitation. However, it was clear the girls were not about to joyfully accept the invitation; instead, with faces red and heads down, they hurried Mr. Pannis along, leaving behind a trail of laughter punctuated with panting. After similar encounters three times over the seventy or eighty meters of the alley, by the time they returned to the brightly lit world, the girls’ faces were so red they looked as if they might bleed, and they said nothing, heads down.
"I say, ladies," Mr. Pannis spoke in a voice that sounded close to crying, "why do I feel that several spots on my waist have started to hurt to the point of numbness? Can you esteemed ladies explain the reason to me?"
"That’s just your imagination," Catherine said with some color fading from her flushed face. She twisted her right hand, which was pinching Mr. Pannis’s waist, a few times as she gritted her teeth, "Just like we feel that you deliberately took us through that alley, it must all be our imagination, yes, absolutely, all imagination."
"This imagination seems quite real though, my waist is actually swollen," Mr. Pannis whined pitifully, defending himself, "Besides, I really didn’t do it on purpose. When I used to come here, it was winter, and nothing like this happened. Who knew the alleys would be so lively in summer? I’m a victim too."
"Hmph, as if we’d believe you," Vivian wrinkled her cute nose and huffed, but the girls gradually loosened their grip, sparing Mr. Pannis’s poor skin and muscles on his waist. Catherine pursed her lips in dissatisfaction, "How can these people have no shame at all, doing such things out on the street."
"Can’t help it, the nights in Sleepless City are all about chasing pleasure," Mr. Pannis massaged his numb waist, offering a helpless explanation, "In some ways, the customs in the northern part of Neville are quite open; they don’t see it as a disgrace. Of course, you wouldn’t get to see such an interesting... no, no, no, I mean, such an unlucky scene in other cities. Only in Sleepless City do you get to encounter such ’good’... misfortune."
"Let’s just pretend we didn’t hear your slip just now," Catherine glared at Mr. Pannis and pointed ahead, "Is that the building you were telling us about, the one you wanted to show us?"
"Indeed, that’s Tonight Homes, quite renowned in Sleepless City. It’s been in business for over forty years and has always been the preferred venue for the Neville City’s upper echelons and even for those of the entire Neville Federation when they come to Sleepless City in pursuit of pleasure," Mr. Pannis nodded, "It has more class than those small shops we just passed, and should be more suitable for you. Let’s go, we’re heading in."
"How do you know so much?" Catherine glanced at Pannis, puzzled, "Even if you once visited here with Her Majesty the Queen on an adventure, that was over a hundred years ago, wasn’t it?"
"Hahaha, the weather is really nice today, and the sun is so round." Pannis laughed awkwardly while looking up at the sky. "Ah, you see, not just anyone can enter here. Do you see those two people standing next to the guards at the entrance? Yes, those with the graying hair. They are the doormen responsible for welcoming guests. There are a total of eight doormen here, it seems they have undergone some training courses of medieval noble butlers. Their eyes are very sharp, able to discern a guest’s identity from their attire and behavior in just a few seconds, determining if they are suitable for this establishment. Those not fit for the status are turned away, and mistakes are almost never made. Of course, adventurers are no exception, but we don’t have to worry. We are definitely of the proper status. No, no, no, you’ve got it all wrong; all of this I’ve only heard about. I’ve absolutely never been here before, hahaha. Such a limitlessly lowbrow place, how could I possibly come here? To even think that is an insult to me."
"Mr. Pannis, it’s a pleasure to see you again," the doorman said with the most proper smile and a bow as he greeted them at the door amidst Pannis’s nonsensical explanations to the young ladies. "I didn’t expect that after thirteen years, you would still look so young and have such beautiful companions with you. It’s truly enviable. That you would choose our establishment again after thirteen years away is our greatest honor. Please, allow me to represent the entire store in welcoming your arrival. Moreover, to thank you for your patronage, all your expenses tonight will be calculated at a 20% discount. I apologize deeply; for a patron like you, we should offer tonight’s services for free, but I am merely a doorman, and a 20% discount is the most authority I have. I hope you don’t mind."
"Hehe, never been here before, huh? I see," Catherine said, her eyes circling Pannis’s face with a smile that was seemingly gentle yet sent chills down one’s spine. "The doorman is truly impressive, remembering a guest from thirteen years ago so clearly, even the name without a mistake."
"This is a requirement of our job," the doorman replied with a modest yet proud smile. "Only by remembering each of our regular clients can we provide the most personalized service."
"No wonder your establishment has been able to maintain its business for over forty years in such a big city." Despite inwardly grinding her teeth at Pannis, Catherine couldn’t help but express her admiration. Such doormen were indeed the most professional. "It’s no wonder that Neville City’s service industry has such a big reputation worldwide. It truly isn’t a fluke."
"Thank you for your compliments. Now then, ladies and Mr. Pannis, this time..." The doorman glanced at the girls and Pannis, subtly changing his wording, "Since there are more of you this time, how about I recommend a new seating arrangement? A new spot, new service, I’m sure you will all be satisfied."
"That would be wonderful," Pannis sent a grateful look that was almost tearful. "I am truly satisfied with your service, wuwuwu." (To be continued.
