Chapter 558: Chapter 26 Unique Reasoning Time_1

"Impressive, you managed to coax her back." When Lina opened her eyes again, her gaze had become much softer, and she radiated the charm of a mature woman. This made those around her feel an urge to obey her commands. Lina gave Pannis a meaningful look, then bent over to tug on Bart’s armor. With one hand, she lifted him from the ground into a standing position. Her hand rested on his shoulder, and she bent slightly to look directly into his eyes. She gave him an eerie smile: "I’m sorry, my sister has a bit of a temper. I’m sure you Dwarves can relate since you often have a hot temper. We all have a shared understanding of that, hehe. Even though she has a temper, she does follow reasons. It’s just that the way she explains reason to people is... quite special. Have you understood her explanation now? If you still do not understand, I can call her back to explain again. Don’t worry about troubling her, she never misses an opportunity to teach others a lesson."

"Heh heh, there’s no need to worry." Pannis, arms folded, watched the drama unfold from the side, then casually said to Catherine, "Furthermore, she couldn’t be more right. Berserkers indeed love to teach people lessons and only use one method—the most straightforward one."

"Beat them down before speaking?" Catherine shook her head with a bitter smile, "Is this the Berserker you mentioned who appeared in the underground of Angus village? You call her the Blood Girl?"

"Yeah, she calls herself the Bloody Lady, so we just go by that." Pannis replied. Then corrected, "But you got one thing wrong: Berserkers don’t beat people down and then talk. Usually, they just do the first part. Once they’ve knocked someone down, there’s no need to keep talking. Who would bother to speak to a corpse?"

Bart finally recovered from the dizzying pain of being repeatedly beaten up. It felt like being trampled by a hundred armored bulls. His whole body ached, every bone protesting the ordeal. However, his Dwarven pride made him push away Lina’s hand from his shoulder and retreat some steps. Holding his painful nose, his swollen eyes glared at Lina as he mumbled unclearly, "What are you trying to pull? Who are you guys, really?"

"Play tricks? Haha, that’s ridiculous. My sister has just explained everything. I’ll repeat it for you again." Lina approached him, her eyes suddenly becoming icy, her voice chilling. She enunciated each word: "If I wanted your goods, I could effortlessly twist off your necks by myself. Did you really think... I would need to scheme against you? So, do you get it now?"

"How could it not be you guys?" Even though Bart had just been beaten up for no reason, he had to admit in the face of such a huge gap in power that Lina’s argument was indeed very compelling. The Dwarves were stubborn and reckless, but not really stupid. Bart’s voice dropped, lacking its earlier confidence, "Only Upper Rank professionals, especially Upper Rank thieves, could search through all our goods without waking us. You are the only Upper Rank professionals in the tribe, who else could it be? Moreover, to silently kidnap Langdon, it’s just astonishing."

"Who among us five looks like an Upper Rank thief?" Catherine ignored Pannis, who pretended to poke his own nose and stepped forward to interrupt, "If no one fits the bill, then why do you keep bothering us? Or could it be that you haven’t even thought about this question and simply rushed over here based on your instinctive guess?"

Bart blinked his round eyes, moved his lips, but didn’t say a word. Catherine let out a long sigh, holding her forehead, and said, "Looks like you really haven’t thought it through. Fine, go back. We’re leaving soon. Don’t come bothering us again."

"No, you haven’t cleared yourselves of suspicion so you can’t leave." Upon hearing that the adventure team was about to set off, Bart just panicked and raised his voice. "You must come with us to find Langdon. Only once we find him and confirm you’re not at fault can you leave."

Bart’s words made everyone laugh. Catherine alternated between laughing and crying as she responded, "Your logic is deeply flawed. Why should we go find someone we don’t know? Moreover, if we really want to leave, do you think you two could stop us? I’ve long heard that Dwarves aren’t all that sharp, and today I see the truth of it. Now, kindly step aside. Otherwise, I would regard your actions as a direct challenge to Nellie’s adventure team and respond accordingly, according to the formal team duel procedure."

Catherine voiced her complaints with a bitter smile initially, but soon her tone turned severe and her hand rested on her sword hilt. Under the influence of Catherine’s imposing legendary-ranked aura, Bart couldn’t help but back up a few steps. However, he protested, "If it wasn’t you guys, then Langdon must have been taken by the enemy. They may be trying to force information out of Lord Cella..."

Catherine, wordlessly, looked up at the sky, sighed, and retorted, "How is that related to us? Your subordinate, your Lord, these are your own matters. What use is it telling us? If I were you, I’d rush to find him instead of wasting time with us."

"But I’ve already looked." Bart suddenly brightened up, speaking loudly, "I can pay. Aren’t you adventurers? I can pay to hire you."

"We’re a Gold Ranked adventure team. Hiring us won’t be cheap." Catherine hesitated for a few seconds before continuing, "Plus, a moment ago you were accusing us of the crime. Now you suddenly want to hire us. Have you really thought this through?"

"I’m sure I can pay any price." Bart hurriedly responded, ignoring Catherine’s last comment. "It’s indeed impossible for Langdon to be kidnapped by you. These tents are not that big. You wouldn’t have room to interrogate him, so it couldn’t be you."

"I can think of at least twenty ways to solve this problem." Pannis murmured, "This fact alone, as a basis for his assertation, is enough reason to admire him."

"Are there really as many as twenty?" Lina had already retreated behind Catherine, leaving the scene to her control. She then stood by Pannis’s side and asked teasingly, "Can you tell us a few of them?"

Pannis was taken aback by Lina’s jesting tone, turning his head in surprise and remarking, "You’re still here?"

"Since I came out, the length of time isn’t affecting anything. Why should I rush to go back?" Lina retorted, "If you feel stifled for a long time, you’d want to get some fresh air too."

"I recognize you, or to be exact, I remember the way you looked at me." Pannis said, "You’re Katerina, one of Lina’s closest sisters. It was your warning that alerted Lina of the library fire, which allowed her to escape in time."

"This is the second time you’ve recognized me." Katerina slung her arm over Pannis’s shoulder. From anyone else, the action might have been flirtatious, but from her, it seemed nothing out of the ordinary. Given her disposition and demeanor it felt like the most natural thing to do. Katerina laughed heartily and patted Pannis’s chest, "I hadn’t realized that your memory is so good."

"Somehow it seems to me that memory isn’t something to be seen." Pannis responded offhandedly, shifting his attention back to Catherine again.

"As I just said ten seconds ago, we won’t take tasks that we don’t like, even if you pay us." Catherine complained, "Don’t you understand common language? Stop bothering me."

"I beg you to accept this task." Bart, seeming like a completely different person, persistently pleaded with Catherine, "I apologize for our rudeness yesterday and today, please forgive me, and then accept this task."

"I forgive you, but I still won’t take the task." Catherine felt as if her head was about to burst. If Bart had continued his initial rude and aggressive approach, Catherine could have chosen to repel him by force. But he had switched to begging for help, which gave Catherine a massive headache. She waved her hand as if to shoo away a pest, "We’re pressed for time and can’t stay here looking for people with you."

"You guys are also headed to Kulan, right?" Bart suddenly lowered his voice, "If you accept this task, when you reach the Mountain Country, all the Hill Dwarves will do their best to assist you."

Catherine paused for a moment, casting an inquisitive look at Pannis and Lina. The two exchanged glances and nodded at Catherine. Catherine sighed and, finally, decided to face Bart again, "I somewhat doubt that you can promise sufficient aid from all the Hill Dwarves."

"Yes, I can." Sensing that Catherine was relenting, Bart excitedly said, "After finding Langdon and escorting us back to the Grand Highland City, I guarantee most of the Hill Dwarves will consider you their best friends and will provide you with all possible assistance."

"What’s your reason?" Catherine inquired, "For such an unrealistic proposal, you should at least give me a reason to believe it."

"Well..." Bart fumbled with his hands, his heavily bearded face revealing a hesitant expression. Catherine sighed and shook her head, "If you don’t want to say it, then forget it. We’re not interested in your secrets either. So let’s continue on our separate journeys."

"Wait, wait, wait." Bart quickly stepped forward preventing Catherine from proceeding, "This matter is complicated, but our safe return to Grand Highland City will have a great impact on the Hill Dwarves. That’s why I am so sure that if you finish this task, all the Hill Dwarves will be grateful to you. I swear by the forge fires and the hammer, I’m not lying to you."

"Is it because of this Lord Cella that you just mentioned?" Catherine pondered, then asked, "Is Lord Cella significant?"

"Yes." Bart nodded, "Lord Cella is the leader of the Hill Dwarves and a member of the three-person council in Kulan. She’s honored as the highest among the Hill Dwarves, and this matter indeed concerns her." (To be continued... If you like this piece, please head over to Qidian to cast your vote.
