Chapter 530: Gate of the Past - Danacus’s Halls of the Dead (Two Chapters combined, 7000 words, only one update today)_4

"Even at a time like this, you never forget to maintain the dignity of every teammate, huh? No wonder so many people, old and young, respect you and would entrust their lives to you simply by your word. However, Kyle, you are not a god after all, can you really maintain such perfection to the end?" These thoughts swirled in Mina’s mind for a moment before she dismissed them with a bitter smile. After exhaling her last Dragon Breath as instructed by Kyle, she transformed back into her human form. Still maintaining her seated posture, she slowly settled back onto Dillie’s back.

"Thank you for your hard work, Lady Mina." Kyle did not forget to thank the dragon, "Your power astounds us. With your help, our journey has become much smoother than before. Thank you."

An indiscernible light flickered in Mina’s golden eyes. She gave a complex smile and shook her head without a word.

"Are you ready?" Kyle did not expect an answer from Mina. He turned towards the black-robed mage, "We need your help now, my old friend."

Philarx was draped from head to toe in a black mage robe, only revealing his pointed chin and thin lips. Upon hearing Kyle’s question, a subtle smile played upon his lips, his voice usually filled with fervour when discussing magic was now surprisingly calm, "Punctuality is a virtue of a mage."

"All right, I guess you mean you are ready." Kyle shrugged. Whenever dealing with quirky mages, one has to be prepared to interpret their words, "Then, we look forward to your performance."

And so, the only offensive mage in the group sprang into action. Among the group of thirteen, there were quite a few who belonged to caster professions like the wolfman Finche, the goblin Christo, the elf Flare, the Winged twins, even Kyle himself could be counted as a semi-caster, but Philarx was the only true mage. When Philarx sprang into action, it demonstrated how terrifying an immensely powerful demigod mage could be.

There were no fancy holy light effects, no lengthy chant recitation, no complicated gesture seals. Philarx simply stretched out his thin finger in the direction of the enemies, which signified the completion of his spell. The action was simple, but the effect was terrifying. The earth groaned beneath the direction of his finger. Without any warning, the earth split open. A long chasm several hundred meters deep and wide appeared in the desert. The fissure extended steadily in the direction Dillie was running, causing all the Undead situated above it to fall into the chasm. But that wasn’t the end. The chasm closed again after barely three seconds. Millions of tons of desert sand piled back together, burying all the Undead swallowed by the chasm under yellow sand. The timing of Philarx’s spell was controlled excellently. By the time the chasm closed after two or three seconds, Dillie had stepped onto the spot where it had been. The area occupied by the Undead was now empty, leaving only the sandy ground for Dillie to traverse freely.

With Dillie running as hard as he could and Philarx maintaining his spell effortlessly, the remaining journey of over ten kilometers became a smooth sail, thanks merely to Philarx’s Modified Earth Splitting Technique. The Undead on both sides chased futilely, occasionally launching long-range attacks. By now, these sporadic attacks no longer had any effect. The thirteen demi-gods arrived at the stairs of the temple without any fuss.

"Master Klarke," Kyle called in a low voice, "Your turn."

Owing to the existence of the temple, Philarx could not continue using his Modified Earth Splitting Technique to hasten their journey and had to stop casting at the stairs. And upon the stairs, there was a multitude of Undead.

"In the name of steel and fire," the dwarf Klarke responded, holding a huge two-handed battle axe in each hand. He leapt off Dillie’s back and landed on the stairs, where upon landing , he started spinning rapidly. The heavy axes accelerated Klarke’s spin, causing it to increase in velocity and form a whirlwind of axe blades. Spurts of Aggression spread out from the blades, increasing the range of the attacks till the entire width of the stairs was covered. This meat-grinder-like attack was a high-level skill of heavy weapon users – Whirlwind Burst, which could only be executed effortlessly by experienced professionals with enough control over their weapons and limbs.

Klarke moved upwards while spinning non-stop, covering a distance of several tens of meters till he stopped in front of the temple’s main entrance. All that was left on the stairs were fragments of bones. There were no Undead left standing. Below the stairs, Dillie let out a low roar, and with a few beats of his wings, he leapt onto the stairs and the temple was fully revealed to the party.

Upon close inspection, the structure was incredibly large, covering over three square kilometers. The temple appeared to be a rare domed structure. Twenty-four cylindrical pillars lay horizontally on one side of the main entrance. The pillars were engraved with intricate, unintelligible patterns, which despite their beauty, caused dizziness if stared at for too long. The two huge doors of the temple stood ajar. However, the inside of the temple was pitch dark and nothing could be seen. The faint moonlight leaking in enabled one to barely make out the two lines of huge text carved on the doors. While everyone knew they were words, no one could recognize them. Only the faces of Philarx and Mina changed upon reading them.

Looking back, a countless number of Undead tirelessly trailed them. At this point, the Undead had lost their final chance to stop the team from entering the temple. Strangely enough, even though the outer areas were teeming with the Undead, the temple was empty. Those trailing them stopped bizarrely at the temple entrance. Even though they were close to the party, they wouldn’t cross the threshold.

"It seems we can take a break for now." Kyle bowed deeply towards everyone, feedback-like make a gesture, "Thank you for trust in me during this journey. With luck, we have made it this far. I hope I did not disappoint any of you."

"Who could be disappointed with you?" Flare’s voice was as smooth as a song, she spoke softly, "Who else apart from you could have brought us here so easily?"

"Sorry to interrupt." Philarx spoke to Mina, his face pale, "Guardian, is this the unidentified God Soul Fragment you were speaking of?"

"Did you understand it too?" Mina said with a wry smile, "I just realized it when I read the text. Seems this is where he lies dormant. But don’t worry, he has already fallen. There’s a high probability that he has indeed turned into a God Soul Fragment. If not, he will at most be a just awakened Divine Soul."

"What happened?" Kyle noticed Philarx’s uncharacteristic mood and contributed to the discussion. "You recognize these words? Have you figured out the identity of the God Soul Fragment?"

"Yes." Mina said bitterly. "I should have thought of it when I saw the Undead. This is the Halls of the Dead of Danacus, the Grimreaper’s System God, the deity who governs death, slumber and despair." (To be continued.
