Chapter 516: Chapter 79 Miracle-like Success_1

"Phew." Emerging from Freya’s fortress, Catherine heaved a sigh of relief, tilting her head toward the moonlit sky. No matter how confidently she spoke, she was not as calm within. Facing such risky circumstances to test a new skill application for the first time, who wouldn’t be nervous? Even self-assuredness didn’t make a difference. The other girls had obviously perceived her anxiety but, reluctant to add unnecessary pressure, they didn’t dwell. They had made up their minds though; if Catherine should fail and find herself in danger, they were prepared to rescue her at all costs, even if it meant severe injuries or even death.

"Sis, I can temporarily suppress the force of the Elemental Barrier at the top." Vivian’s voice floated out from the observation lattice of the fortress, "Whenever you think you need it, you can observe the exact location from there. There’s no need to rush, we can hold out for at least another half-hour. We have plenty of time. You can take it slow and remember, your own safety is the priority."

"Understood." After a moment of hesitation, Catherine leaped onto the top of the fortress. At its base, weak enemies continued to retreat with injuries due to the Elemental Barrier created by Vivian’s array. But every second, more foes approached from all over, increasing their numbers instead of declining. These frenzied assailants launched attacks on the fortress, most blasted away by the array’s recoil before they could complete their attacks. Still, some enemies braced against Vivian’s magic, deploying their forces against the fortress. Catherine knew that even the sturdiest fortress had a limit. If the vile enemy continued attacking as such, it would only be a matter of time before the fortress fell.

"Indeed, it’s a gamble." Catherine sighed, her gaze shifting toward the direction that Lina had pointed out. When the surrounding enemies increased, the area became more and more distinct. Catherine could now find the vacant area at a glance. It was a slope about forty meters away, within a three-meter radius, devoid of any life, forming a stark contrast with the surrounding crowd. The controlled Sea Race around seemed to fear that area. None dared to set foot there, even the ones who dared to get nearer did so with extreme caution, as if they feared offending the land.

Observing from afar, there seemed to be nothing on the ground within the specific range, only scattered boulders. It appeared that a wide-scale landslide had taken place there long ago. If the mission target was indeed there, it must be buried underneath. Catherine found herself praying silently to the deity, hoping that the depth of the debris was not too deep to excavate the mission target in time.

"I see the area." Catherine slowly calmed down and spoke in a steady voice, "A distinct void. Perhaps there is some validity in what you’re saying, Lina. Those indoctrinated Sea Race fear that place, to a point where their dread seems palpable. It would actually surprise me if the object was not buried there."

"That’s a relief. Now that my conjecture is confirmed, that place is our greatest hope." There was palpable concern in Lina’s voice as she softly replied, "However, you must be extra careful yourself and ensure your safe return. If something goes wrong, we’ll figure another way."

"Alright, I am going now." Catherine took slow, deep breaths, adjusting her state, "Pray for me."

"Do you need my firearms support?" Freya asked for final confirmation. "If need be, I could direct all the crystal energy guns in your direction for a cover bombardment. It might not be significantly effective, but it may relieve you of some stress for a brief period."

"Not necessary, I have another plan." Catherine surveyed the crowd near the fortress. Within a few seconds, she locked her gaze onto a comparably weaker Silver Rank member of the Sea Race. She took advantage of the moment when he lost his combat power temporarily after being counterattacked by the Elemental Barrier while launching an attack on the fortress. Catherine leapt down from the top of the fortress, her shield crashing down onto him, promptly knocking him out. After capturing him, she wasted no time in grabbing the Silver Rank Sea Race member’s ankle and leaping back onto the top of the fortress. After a moment of silence, she spoke to those inside the fortress, "I’m setting off now, wish us luck."

"Safe journey." Lina crossed in the shape of a square on her chest, a symbol of the earth, and murmured a prayer, "Blessings of Denia, my lord."

As Lina whispered her prayer, Catherine suddenly unleashed an Aggression Burst. The intense outburst of aggression did not release outward but was introverted to strengthen her body. After the amplification of aggression, Catherine’s power soared to its peak. She then splashed a bottle of water on the face of the controlled Sea Race member she was holding. The sea creature stirred from unconsciousness due to the cold water, still dazed and uncomprehending, when Catherine used all her strength to grab its ankle and throw it out. The unfortunate sea creature, who just came into consciousness, instinctively screamed and flailed its limbs in air. It could not control its spinning body and was swiftly thrown by Catherine. She chose the thinnest and lightest one, and her power, reinforced by aggression, was enough to toss it far away. The unfortunate controlled sea creature, after rising around five meters in height from the base of the fort, formed a perfect parabola and flew nearly twenty meters before reaching the highest point and preparing to fall.

But it didn’t have time to fall. Before reaching the highest point, Catherine activated her Charge of Fearlessness and targeted it from the ground. In a blink of an eye, she hit it with her shield, causing it to fly even farther. However, the impact stopped her charge in mid-air, and she quickly descended under gravity. During the fall, Catherine repeatedly swung her one-handed sword. The Upper Rank knight’s Aggression Blade skill, Vacuum Slash, continued to be launched, sending wave after wave of aggression blades onto the ground. Catherine tried to slow her descent with the resistance from these blasts, although the effect was minimal. For her, any reduction in speed was a victory.

Seeing that she was less than a meter high and about to fall into the enemy’s encircling trap, the enemy below had raised their weapons in preparation for an attack, and her Charge of Fearlessness was ready for use again. Catherine gave a silent cheer in her heart and with a focused gaze, she turned to her next selected target and activated Charge of Fearlessness again. Amid the ferocious stares of the opponents below, she became a silver streak of light and once again cut a twenty-odd meter swathe. Due to the low height, enemy weapons were already within reach but the enemies were caught almost unprepared. Only a few Legendary Ranked controlled sea creatures managed to raise their weapons in time, inflicting some varying depth wounds on her legs, but they couldn’t stop her charge.

The collision happened again, and the enemy targeted by Catherine stumbled back a few steps only to be blocked by the bodies of his comrades, while Catherine landed smoothly, retreated a few steps by inertia, and entered the previously observed empty area.

The miracle finally happened. When Catherine entered the blank area, although the controlled Sea Race members huddled around its borders, none dared to move any closer. No one even attempted to attack with long-range weapons or skills. They merely milled around in a daze. More and more controlled Sea Race members gathered from all directions, even those attacking from the other side mellowed their assault. Yet, Catherine remained unscathed, standing at her spot without any harm.

"We succeeded, elder sis has succeeded!" Lina from within the fort screamed and continuously hugged Vivian and Freya in jubilation. Unbeknownst to herself, tears streamed down her face. Both Vivian and Freya, who had been stoically controlling the defenses, were actually in a state of extreme mental tension. Freya felt a wave of exhaustion and broke into a sudden cold sweat that soaked her clothes once she confirmed that Catherine had safely entered the enemy’s encirclement without any attacks. Vivian, however, fared worse. After hugging Lina and Freya, she collapsed on the ground. Her overly agitated state resulted in a disruption of her mana, rendering her unable to control her own body. Vivian’s reaction frightened Freya and Lina, and they only relaxed when, after ten or so seconds, Vivian finally regained control of her magic. The three girls handed the defense over to the fortress and the Array and gathered at the observatory grid. In order to see Catherine’s position, Freya purposely adjusted the height of the observatory and built an observation platform on the ground, allowing the girls to barely see Catherine, enclosed tightly by the large group of controlled Sea Race members about ten meters away.

The experiment was a success, and the conjecture was verified, causing Catherine’s heart to race with excitement. However, she didn’t let her excitement show, given her team leader’s steadiness. She sat down to rest for half a minute before getting up again, and started searching in the empty area. After several trials, she confirmed that as long as she was within the blank area, even if she approached the surrounding controlled Sea Race members, they wouldn’t attack her in order to avoid any part of their body from entering the area. Once this was confirmed, Catherine could search without worry.

Just as she had observed from afar, there was nothing on the ground of this area apart from fragments of rocks - not even weeds. Left with no other choice, she took out a shovel from her backpack to start digging through the rocky ground. The task of excavation was much more difficult than digging through soil as these fragments of rock had compacted together over unknown years. Yet Catherine, who was a knight, was in no shortage of strength, and layer after layer of the rocky ground was stripped away under her efforts, digging deeper and deeper.

As she lifted her shovel again, her movement suddenly paused. Beneath the lifted fragments of rock appeared a human bone. (To be continued.
