Chapter 515: Chapter 78 Blank Area_1

"Phew, I’m so tired." The moment they entered Freya’s mobile fortress, Catherine and Lina practically collapsed onto the ground. Breathlessly, Catherine said, "I never imagined this battle would drain so much energy. I highly doubt I could hold up after battling a few more times like this, which lasted only half an hour."

"Big sister, let’s not even think about it. I’m not sure if you could last, but I know for a fact I can’t." Lina miserably rose from the ground, not even having the strength to heal herself, her wounds gaping open, "Besides, it’s not just about doing it a few more times, even once more is already pushing it. We have to admit that we’ve seriously underestimated our enemies. It would be very difficult to continue your plan, big sister. Of course, it’s not entirely impossible, but the chance is minimal."

"Yes, I admit, the plan has indeed failed." Catherine didn’t deny it. "Also, if you don’t get yourself healed, I will be fine but you might faint from losing too much blood."

"Don’t worry, I’ve got it under control." While Lina kept her nonchalant demeanor, she started treating her own wounds, and then cast a Healing Divine Spell. "In that case, how about we change our strategy, big sister?"

"You just mentioned that you have some new ideas." Catherine nodded. "Let me hear it. What’s the new approach?"

"Wait a moment." Lina sped up her actions, quickly healing the more serious wounds on herself and Catherine before forcing herself up from the ground. She walked over to the observation grid, gesturing for the others to come over. Everyone huddled around the grid, Vivian rested on Freya’s back due to her short stature, peering at the direction Lina was pointing at. "I noticed a problem about ten minutes ago. However, I wasn’t certain so I didn’t bring it up. But given the circumstances now, it might prove helpful."

"Stop beating around the bush." Freya said, "Look at your sister, she’s ready to eat you alive. If you continue talking nonsense, she’d probably beat you up. Hurry up with it. Even if there’s an actual problem, no one would blame you."

"Look at their formation," Lina hurriedly pointed at the enemies, "You all must have noticed it, they’re mainly concentrated on our side, but they’re more sparse behind them. There are only a handful of them scattered around the other half of the area, with about six to seven meters between each of them. It’s as if they’re focusing all their power on trapping us here."

"Yes, it’s pretty obvious." Catherine nodded. "Are you suggesting we sneak past them and search the other side?"

"No, that wouldn’t be of any use." Lina shook her head. "It doesn’t seem like it from here, but when we went out earlier, you probably didn’t notice because you were in the midst of intense battle. I, on the other hand, spent most of my time searching and noticed something while glancing around."

"I have a great feeling about this." Catherine probed, "What did you find?"

Lina didn’t rush to answer but instead asked Vivian for a piece of paper. She drew a few rough circle diagrams on it and said, "Look, the big circle represents the gentle slope we’re on. And this is where we are."

"Your proportions are all wrong." Both Vivian and Freya, being scholars, couldn’t stand such inaccurate diagrams. Vivian grabbed the pen, redrew a more standard position map, and asked, "Where’s the other circle then? Oh, here? Okay, continue."

"Yes, this is our position," Lina continued. "We were covering this area, but turned up empty-handed. However, I noticed that their positions would shift according to our movements, not just those close to us, but also the loosely arranged defenders at their rear."

"Well, that’s normal." Catherine said, "Even though they’re under control, some of their battle instincts remain. Naturally, they would adjust their positions according to our movements. What’s so strange about that?"

"Everything seems normal up to this point, but here’s the strange part," Lina raised her head, her eyes shining brightly. "After several more observations, some done deliberately by making you stray off course, I can confirm something. No enemy has ever walked within three to four meters radius around this point."

"Hold on, I’m a bit confused." Catherine stopped Lina, frowned in thought, and then said, "But they always maintain a large distance from each other. A gap of several meters doesn’t seem unusual."

"Yes, a gap of a few meters is nothing. But what if that gap constantly remains despite their position shifts?" Lina explained, "Besides, I saw one of the controlled Sea Race creatures, who needed to move to the other side of that area. Instead of walking in a straight line, it took a detour to avoid that zone."

"So, you think that whatever we’re searching for is there?" Catherine’s voice got higher, barely hiding her excitement, "It’s highly likely indeed, since that thing is aimed at the Sea Race. It can’t be taken by the Sea Race — not even the controlled ones. So, to be safe, the Sea Race it controls are made to stay away."

"Exactly, that’s what I think," Lina nodded, "I think it’s highly likely too."

Suppressing her excitement, Catherine took a few deep breaths to calm herself down: "And what do you two think?"

"I wasn’t at the scene." Vivian spoke, "But if Lina’s observations are accurate, there’s a possibility."

"I hadn’t noticed until Lina pointed it out." Freya remarked, "During my scans of the battlefield, I vaguely remember no one ever standing in that area. Lina’s observations should be correct."

"So, big sis." Lina elbowed Catherine in the ribs. "Interested in taking a gamble with us?"

"There’s a significant risk." Catherine frowned, "We’d have to traverse through the blockade of nearly all our enemies, not only would it be strenuous, but if we made a miscalculation, we’d be encircled with no way out. It’s likely that we all end up dying here."

"Do we have a way out now?" Lina countered, "Unless you’re willing to abandon Pannis, the four of us could run for it, the mission would fail, but we’d save ourselves. However, are you willing to abandon Pannis? Not just you, none of us are willing to. So, it seems like we don’t have much of a choice here. Whether we gamble or not, it’s just a matter of sooner or later."

"Let me think, let me think." Catherine murmured quietly, pacing circles in the fortress. Vivian had once again taken her position in the center of the Array to recharge before Catherine slowly shook her head. "No, your plan has issues."

"Big sis." Lina called out anxiously, "Now..."

"Wait till I finish." Catherine interrupted, "The plan needs modification, it’s not us taking a gamble together, but me alone. You stay here."

Lina laughed, sighed, and shook her head, "You should know me, my sister. I understand you are considering my safety and want me to stay here, but do you really think I’d agree? Do you think I’d let you risk your life alone? No matter what, two people can work together. Just sending you alone? You’re underestimating me."

"No, I have my reasons." Catherine didn’t back down, asserting, "I’ve gained a deeper understanding of my own mobility skills while fighting the controlled members of the Sea Race deep in the ocean over the past few days. I used to limit myself to terrestrial warfare but fighting in the sea showed me a glimpse of three-dimensional warfare. So, I need to validate my hypothesis in actual combat. If there isn’t a problem, I can just engage in a small-scale fight and charge right into the area."

"What’s next?" Lina absentmindedly toyed with her silver hair, pressing further, "What if our assumptions are wrong?"

"Even if our assumptions are wrong, I can still come back the same way." Catherine stated confidently, "Don’t worry, I won’t gamble with my life."

"Even if everything you say is correct." Lina continued to question, concerned, "What if your test fails? Have you thought about that?"

"Heh, of course I have." Catherine pinched Lina’s face, speaking as if coddling a child, "Use your brain. If the test fails, I wouldn’t be able to cross. I’d still be near the fortress and can retreat at any time. There, there. I promise you, if my test fails, I’ll come back and bring you along. No need to be so tense."

"Phew, have it your way." After staying silent for some time, Lina heaved a deep sigh, "Since you’re the big sis, what you say goes. But remember what you promised us. You agreed to walk with us on this path of seeking redemption. If you quit halfway through, none of us will forgive you."

"Of course, I’ll come back safe and sound. These controlled individuals from the Sea Race aren’t that terrifying." Catherine said earnestly, "So, you guys just defend this position and wait for my victorious news. Trust me, don’t forget I’m a knight, and a knight never forsakes their promises."

"Alright, it’s settled then." Lina started chanting a prayer, casting a defensive divine spell on Catherine. After a moment of thought, Freya took out a coin and handed it to Catherine, "This artifact saved my life, a masterpiece from a Demigod. Break it in a critical moment, it’ll cast a force field on you, resisting attacks from anyone but a Demigod, lasting three seconds. Be sure to use it when there’s danger. I’d rather not think about your eulogy."

"Thank you." Catherine carefully puts the coin in an easy-to-reach pocket, nodding her head in gratitude.

"Big sis." From the center of the Array, Vivian tossed Catherine a small box, "Three vials of the highest-grade healing potion. Don’t hesitate to use them, money is useless when you’re dead."

"You guys need to stop." Catherine waved her hand with a bitter smile, "Don’t act like I won’t return. I’m still quite confident in this plan. Alright, I’m heading off."

The girls stayed silent, watching Catherine walk out of the fortress through the opened gate, their hearts weighed down. It was only then that they realized, even after ascending to the status of Legendary, there were still too many uncontrollable variables. (To be continued...
