Chapter 507: Chapter 71: Rapid Raid_1
The girls stood on the mountainside, alertly watching Melvis’s deep-sea Whale Crab, but in the blink of an eye, they found themselves transported to an endless ocean. Where they had been standing on an island, now they stood on damp and slippery rocks, while the Whale Crab submerged in the sea before them, floating and sinking with the waves, its four pairs of legs skimming the water, and its two enormous, wet claws held high in the air.
In the next instant, three bright moons rose once again from the horizon, and the scene dramatically changed. The girls now stood upon a sandy landscape littered with countless white bones. Not far from them, there was a stark contrast between the yellow sand and the sea, like two opposing spaces vying to devour each other from the edges.
In the depths of the sea ahead, a large swarm of the sea race, controlled and brought ashore with the Whale Crab, was gathered around the Crab, just like the girls had been brought into this domain. Nearly a hundred of these controlled sea creatures formed a sizeable group, and it was enough to send chills down anyone’s spine.
"Let’s go, continue with our previous plan." Pannis patted the backs of the four girls in turn. All they perceived was a blur in the scenery around them, and the next moment, they found themselves back on the rocks where they had originally been standing. The enormous Whale Crab and the swarming sea tribe had vanished, and Pannis was nowhere to be seen.
"Is that the inherent Psychic Domain of a Demigod?" Vivian asked dazedly, "I can understand that the sea is the crab’s domain, but the desert... is that Pannis’s? What kind of place is that? How can he use such a place as his psychic sanctuary?"
"Don’t waste time, put on your combat gear now." Catherine, who had previously been introduced to Pannis’s Inherent Psychic Domain, was less shocked and spoke coldly, "He’s buying us time. What we need to do now is to set out immediately and find the crab’s so-called master, our mission objective, and discuss everything else later."
"Are we really not going to think of a way to help him?" Freya asked with some concern, "He once said that his strength isn’t at its peak. If he’s not in his best state, it would be quite dangerous for him to face that Demigod Crab alone."
"Trust him completely and complete our own tasks as quickly as possible." Catherine said calmly as she fitted each piece of scale armor onto her body, "That’s what a qualified teammate should do. If you genuinely wish to help him, find our mission objective quickly instead of adding to his troubles. Freya, after more than a year, we are once again working together. I hope you haven’t forgotten all the principles of teamwork in an adventurer team."
"You underestimate me, I was just worried for a moment." Freya calmed down, indifferent to the dry, muddy crud on her body, and wore her combat trousers and leather armor, "Don’t worry, I will never forget the days we adventured together, so what you’re worried about will never happen."
"Get ready." Although Vivian and Lina were covered in dirt, their equipment was neatly assembled, and their weapons and items were all back in their comfortable places. Vivian tossed each of the girls a bottle of red potion. After a quick glance, they carefully stored them in their most accessible pockets.
"Final check." It took the girls less than two minutes to completely gear themselves up and prepare for the battle. Catherine gave the order, "Thirty seconds. Lina, confirm the direction again to ensure that our target has not moved."
"Direction confirmed." A silver light flashed in Lina’s eyes, and she nodded at Catherine, "There is no sign that the target has moved."
"Perfect." Catherine hit her sword against her shield, producing a crisp sound. "Now, the last inspection is over."
It seemed that with the appearance of the Demigod of the Sea Race, the nearby controlled sea creatures had all been stirred up. They were no longer aimless but had found their targets and were gathering towards the crevice in the rock where the girls were. When the girls began to move, more and more controlled sea creatures started coming ashore, wading through waist-deep mud on the beach towards the rocky peaks, while those that had already crossed the mud flats began to climb the mountain. This was just the half of the island where the girls were located and a large number of controlled sea creatures had been pulled into the domain where Pannis and the Whale Crab were battling. On the other half of the island, which remained unscathed by the domain, more controlled sea creatures must have gathered.
"This will be a hard fight, but it won’t last long, Vivian, Lina." Lina, whose arms were enhanced by divine magic, easily picked up Vivian and tossed her towards Catherine. The force was just right, and Vivian landed steadily on Catherine’s back. Catherine adjusted Vivian’s position and continued, "As long as we keep moving and don’t let the enemy pin us down, we will win. Conversely, if we allow ourselves to be pinned down, even just for a few minutes, the enclosure will thicken, and we will lose. Everyone knows the battle plan now, right?"
"High-speed sprint, extensive movement, don’t stop even for a moment." The girls respond in unison: "Let’s prevent the enemy from surrounding us."
"Excellent." Catherine gives a thumbs up and calls out loudly: "Let’s go now, for victory."
"For victory." The girls’ vibrant response still echoes in place, but their figures have already disappeared. Forming an assault formation, they start advancing around the hillside towards the other half of the island.
The island isn’t large, but even so, a roundabout along the hillside would be an almost two-kilometer journey. Drawing on their usual stamina, the girls, fully equipped, would finish a two-kilometer sprint in just four or five minutes. However, this place is different. It’s a hillside lined with enormous boulders, bereft of any flat paths. The surfaces of the enormous rocks beneath their feet are smooth, and some of them sport slippery moss in their shade, making it incredibly difficult to even stand, let alone run and jump between them. Add to that the rough terrain and the gaping gaps between these boulders, and the challenge of their advance only escalates.
That’s just part of the difficulty. The real challenge arises from the controllered Sea-Race that abound all around. These sea creatures, like sharks drawn to blood, won’t take their eyes off the girls. Hiding at this point would be futile. All that’s left are contests of speed and strength, the only way out is through battle.
"Thud." Catherine sweeps her shield, hitting one of the controlled Sea-Race squarely. Just like Pannis said, these powerful sea dwellers lose their strength significantly once they reach land. Like the few in front of them, probably fresh on land from the sea, their steps are unsteady. On the rocks, their balance wavers even more, a powerful sweep from Catherine’s shield sends two of them rolling down the hillside.
With a clatter, a metal puppet, short and round, appears at Freya’s feet. The puppet opens its circular mouth, a metallic net bundled into a sphere emerges and expands with a ’thwack’ after passing Catherine. Among the several controlled Sea Race directly faced with the net, the foremost one swings its right arm. The arm, curved and serrated like a mantis’s forearm, cleaves through the air, severing the metal net into two with an ear-piercing rip. But, these Sea Race have overlooked the puppet spewing out the net, which isn’t far behind it. Its round body, acting like a rubber ball, bounces off the intervening rocks, rolling under the Sea Race’s feet, and shatters with a bang, emitting small metallic beads. Already unsteady, those Sea Race are in more of a predicament as they tumble, and roll down the hillside like the others before them.
"Damn, they’re increasing." While sprinting, Freya dexterously assembles some spare parts before tucking them back into her pocket. "I don’t understand how they found us."
"It might be my fault." Lina frowns and pants out, "What we’re looking for is likely a Divine Artifact. I’ve grossly underestimated their power."
"What does that mean?" Vivian, who seems the most at leisure while lounging on Catherine’s back, busily twists magical seals in her hands. But her focus isn’t on the imminent enemies, but those potential ones that might climb onto their chosen path. Her water-attribute magic dampens a large area of rocks before turning it into ice, rendering the rocks exceptionally slippery. Even terrestrial races would struggle with maintaining their footing on the icy rocks, let alone the Sea Race who aren’t adept at land. After eliminating several threats consecutively, Vivian turns to ask, "What did you do?"
"When I sensed the Divine Artifact, it likely sensed my scrutiny too, alert to the danger." Lina admits regretfully, "I never thought that a Divine Artifact could sense threats and even seek help automatically. That’s why it attracted the attention of the crab."
"So, you think the ’master’ the crab spoke of was in reference to the Divine Artifact itself, not some person who owned it?" As Catherine leaps onto a protruding rock, she turns to steady Freya, "You believe these are responses triggered by the artifact itself?"
"Exactly. If we were dealing with a possessor, we’d be dealing with a terrifying trap, not this seemingly easy situation we’re in now." With a boost from a Divine Spell, Lina leaps onto the rock after Catherine, "For instance, after allowing these Sea Race to take their positions, the crab could chase us out, robbing us of all hope, ahhh~~~"
Midway through her sentence, Lina suddenly slips. Fortuitously, Freya, who was close by, caught her, "Be careful. If you fall, you’ll be caught in their encirclement, then we’re completely done for."
