Chapter 464: Chapter 31 The Blocked Investigation Result_1
"What situation?" Seizing a free moment, Catherine pulled Pannis aside and asked quietly, "I remember that different races can’t breed, so why would she ask such a question?"
"The merfolk are the exception, the only exception." Pannis explained quietly, "The merfolk are all females who, during the mating process, absorb the vital energy released by their partners to give birth to their next generation. If it doesn’t work the first time, they can absorb many times, regardless of the race or the individual. Therefore, there is generally no concept of a father within the merfolk population. There are exceptions, though, some merfolk indeed develop feelings for other races and settle down with their loved ones, which is when a father can be said to exist. In recent centuries, it has been trendy among younger generations of merfolk to seek their fathers."
"You know so much." Catherine eyed Pannis, deliberately keeping some distance. She said in a mysterious tone, "It seems her suspicion is very reasonable, you really might be her father."
"Scumbag." Vivian’s soft hat emerged from behind Catherine, "I was really wrong about you."
"Worse than a beast." Lina, with repulsion in her eyes, stared at Pannis and said disdainfully, "You won’t even leave fish alone, it’s really despicable."
"Hey, you three." Pannis’s veins on his forehead bulged out as he gritted his teeth. "I am innocent, alright? I am also a victim here, you can’t just label me like this."
"Alright, if you object to being called ’worse than a beast’, let’s change it." Lina thought for a moment with her lips pursed, "Let’s change it to ’like a beast’, which is a lot better than ’worse than a beast’."
"You guys, really making me furious." Pannis gritted his teeth, "You should learn from Freya, look at her, not a word of complaint, diverting their attention for you guys. What a great teammate."
"Hey, Mr. Casanova who’s possibly Lanna’s father." Responding to Pannis’s praise, Freya turned her head back and called out, "Lanna asked if we should invite the captain over there to join us for lunch."
"No need." Pannis covered his face in desperation, moaning in despair, "I’m really not her father. I do know Doris, but when I met her, she was already born. I’m really innocent."
"I knew you knew the merfolk priestess." Catherine chuckled behind her hand and pushed Pannis from the back, "We guessed it a long time ago. Let’s go, let’s eat, don’t dawdle or our guests will get impatient."
"Whose fault is it really?" Pannis gave a bitter smile and walked into the canopy, re-heating the prepared lunch. "Is Doris okay?"
"Mother is fine, she will retire in more than 30 years." Lanna took a grilled fish, gently tore off a piece with her slender fingers and put it into her mouth, licking her pale fingertip with her pink tongue. "She said she could relax after her retirement and would come ashore to play with you. She also said that you are not Father, but Mother never said she would come ashore to play with anyone else."
"Alright, alright, let’s stop this topic." Pannis sighed, "Doris and I are just friends, we met when I went to the deep sea in the past, there’s no other relationship, and I’m not your father, so give it up."
"Ah, what a shame." Lanna sighed, disappointment in her charming voice made her sound more irresistible. But after all, Lanna was a royal princess from the deep sea, so she quickly got over it, no longer dwelled on the question of who her father was, smiled warmly as usual, and praised, "Mr. Pannis, although I have eaten a lot of food on land, I must admit that the food you grill is absolutely top-notch."
"That’s because the ingredients are fresh, they were still in the sea an hour ago." Pannis picked up a shell much larger than a human face, "Some are difficult to cook, like this."
"Silent Hunter?" Lamia, who had been silent during Lanna’s quest for her father, kept stealing glances at Pannis with a lethal gaze until the misunderstanding was resolved and her expression returned to its usual somberness. She said with a cold voice, "This thing preys on small fish in the seabed all year round, it’s quite common. But isn’t it very difficult to eat? The meat inside is tough like lizardtail tree gum, you can’t chew it at all. Even if you cut it finely and manage to swallow it, it will upset your stomach for several days. Nobody in the sea eats it, you people from the land dare to eat it?"
"Of course we dare, it’s just very laborious to cook, ordinary people can’t do it." Pannis removed the top shell, revealing the plump, white meat inside, cut into small pieces and sprinkled with shiny, colorful herb crumbs, the cooked meat exuding an appetizing aroma. "After killing it, you dig out all the meat, cut it into thumb-sized pieces, then tap the surface repeatedly to break down the muscles. Then slow roast it for ten minutes, tap it dozens of times again, and roast it for another ten minutes before you can eat it."
"You understand more about sea food than us, the Sea Race." Lamia’s calm face surprisingly expressed astonishment, and her snake tail unconsciously swept the beach due to her emotional change.
Pannis was even more surprised and asked back, "But this is the method Doris herself taught me, you don’t know it?"
"Mother must not love me anymore." Lanna put on a very cute and pitiful look, feigning dismay, "Such delicious food, she has never let me try. It’s heartbreaking."
"Eh, well, you can try." Pannis scratched his head, reluctantly handing over the seashell in his hand, "But keep in mind that even after this kind of preparation, you can’t eat too much. Usually, after eating one, you are done."
"Such a large shell, one is enough to fill the stomach." Lina didn’t know when she had put her decorative glasses back on, and said expressionlessly, "However, it’s better to eat less of this. It’s especially hard for common people to digest in the stomach."
"Lina," said Catherine in a low voice, getting a headache whenever she saw Lina wearing glasses, "Why have you been switching to this look these days? Have any special needs?"
"Miranda is an oceanography expert," Lina adjusted her glasses, swung the heaviest book she was carrying, and made eye contact with Catherine without any emotion. "I’ve spent these days learning about the ocean from her, I have no choice but to be in this condition."
"Alright, whatever you want." Catherine shook her head helplessly and ignored Lina, hidden behind glasses. She turned to Lanna, who was holding the shell and savoring its taste, and asked, "Let’s talk business. How do we get into the deep sea?"
"Amphibian Beads," said Lanna, her mouth occupied with food, but Pannis and Lina answered for her. Pannis shrugged, then shut his mouth. Lina opened the book in her hand and said, "It’s a type of pearl that’s extremely valuable in the underwater world. It allows terrestrial races to breathe through their skins for a certain period of time. It greatly enhances the flexibility of terrestrial races underwater and is the best tool when the Sea Race invites the mainlanders to visit the underwater world. The use of Amphibian Beads is quite tricky though. You need to cut open the skin on your back, embed the pearl, and activate it with the secret method of the Sea Race. Then you can treat it to let the wound heal."
"But even so," asked Catherine hurriedly, "what if a battle breaks out during the mission? I don’t believe the Amphibian Beads would let us fight as easily as we do on land."
"I have no idea about that," Lina said matter-of-factly, "Miranda is a frail scholar who’s never really been to the deep sea. All her knowledge comes from the records of others."
"Actually, what Miss Lina said is mostly correct, but there are some details that those people probably don’t know," Lanna corrected her, not knowing the specifics of Lina’s situation, and merely assumed that Miranda was a real, existing scholar. "The main function of the Amphibian Beads is not only for underwater breathing, as that scholar mentioned. Instead, they can be deliberately controlled to enter a state of emersion. In this state, the obstruction of water on the user will be minimized. This greatly eases the impact of underwater combat. Moreover, the task may not necessarily take place in the water. Therefore, Catherine, you don’t need to worry."
"Not in the deep sea?" Catherine questioned in surprise, "Or not in the sea at all?"
"Yes." Lanna hesitated for a moment, sneakily glanced at Pannis, clenched her teeth and said, "Though I don’t know the details of the task that my mother wanted to entrust to you, I can guess some of it. I’ll tell you now."
"Your highness," Lamia jumped in surprise, wanting to intervene but was stopped by Lanna’s look.
"Hey, hey, hey, I am not your father," Pannis cringed, "Your action of looking at me and then revealing the secret to us ..."
"I know, I know," This was the first time Lanna showed some impatience, interrupting Pannis’s words like a typical rebellious daughter, "This is my own choice, you don’t need to worry about it."
"Ha, ha," Pannis was taken aback, could only hang his head and sigh.
"Over the last few decades, a strange area came to existence in the ocean," Lanna recalled, "Many members of the Sea Race disappeared within it over time, including many experienced underwater warriors. Each race sent numerous exploration teams to investigate, but none returned. Later, under the call of the temple, the various races of the seabed joined forces for an investigation. The results were kept under tight wraps, known only to the strongest of each race and my mother. All they did was establish a safety range around the area, any Sea Race crossing the safety range will have to face the consequences."
"Before my mother asked me to find you and entrust this mission, I vaguely heard that the boundary was expanding. I don’t know if it’s the range of that area, and during that period, my mother troubled indeed," Lanna sighed, and stole another glance at Pannis before continuing, "That’s why I hope you can solve this problem and make my mother happy again as soon as possible."
"But, what’s the connection between this and the fact that we might not be fighting in the sea?" Catherine asked back.
"Did I not mention this?" Lanna blinked, laughed apologetically, "The center of that area is supposedly a medium-sized island."(To be continued.
