Chapter 460: Chapter 27 Girls’ hearts_1
"Pat, pat." The four girls slowly walked into their own cabin. Maggie, who was working as a servant, didn’t follow. She had a knack for reading the room and offered to help her colleagues comfort the other passengers, promising she would come back late. This consideration from her gave the girls, who needed a private space to calm down, a better impression of her.
Pushing open the cabin door, a lingering heat still filled the room as the air-cooling array had been turned off for some time and had just been restarted. However, the girls paid no mind to such minor discomfort and hurried into the cabin eagerly.
"So tired." Lina, the first one to enter the room, pulled off the glasses perched on her nose carelessly, tossed them somewhere, and without a second thought about her clergy image, she flung herself onto the living room carpet. Resting her head on her arms, she stretched out her body, letting out a seductive groan of relaxation. After a long stretch, she looked up at the ceiling with blurry eyes and murmured, "I’m so tired. I suddenly feel so tired."
"We are indeed tired." Vivian quickly stripped off her scholar’s robe and quickly put on her blue adventurer’s skirt, as if only dressing that way could give her enough courage. After changing her clothes and holding her rough magic staff, she finally felt a sense of calm. She quickly set upright the long chair that had been disarrayed by the shock, and lay down on it. After squirming around on the soft chair a few times, she closed her eyes and continued, "Even the fight with that deity wasn’t as exhausting as this, the mental pressure is really too overwhelming."
Catherine shook her previously injured right hand. Although the damage to her muscles had already been healed by Lina, a faint sense of swelling still lingered. Of course, Catherine knew well that it was just phantom pain, so unlike the other two girls, she tidied up the scattered tea table and put all items back in their place. Then she arranged all the fallen chairs in a neat order. After doing all these, Catherine finally sat down on one of the chairs. Even at this time, her sitting posture remained habitually dignified. Settling down in her chair, she let out a small sigh and said somberly, "I thought it was simple at first, but after quieting down, I consequently found my thoughts a mess. Ah, I’m sorry, my sisters. I should’ve been the one to lighten the mood in this situation, but I barely had a word to say to him, and had to rely on Lina to carry the conversation. But Lina, you’re amazing, you could talk to him so naturally at the time."
"Don’t joke with me, I ran off a while ago, the one who spoke to him was Miranda." Lina put a book over her face to hide her expression and replied in a muffled voice, "If I had to face such mental stress directly, I guess I would have started crying on the spot."
"You’re still the same, you love to run away, but there’s nothing really wrong with that." Catherine sighed lightly, smiling bitterly, "But I can’t really say anything, I’m no different."
"What should we do in the future?" Vivian, who was lying on the chair, suddenly opened her eyes and said blankly, "No wonder he always hid this from us, everything will change now, right?"
"I don’t want to lose a family member, I want our home to be as it was before." Catherine put her hand on her chest, feeling a heartache, "I still want to barbecue together in the backyard, I want to sunbathe together, I want to catch him sneaking out from the garden wall and the tree every day. But, is that really possible now?"
"Sister, didn’t you do well earlier?" Lina looked at Catherine with full expectation, and said in a pleading tone, "He also said that, he is still Pannis, so it means he doesn’t plan to leave, he still wants to be with everyone."
"That was just me expressing my attitude to him, and gaining his understanding. However, the problem doesn’t lie with him, it lies with us." Catherine smiled bitterly, "Can we really treat him as we did before? If it’s just the atmosphere as it was a moment ago, I’m afraid it would be very painful for both him and us. In a few days, not long after, neither he nor we will be able to bear it. Rather than parting in despair, we should take the initiative to separate now, when we all still have a good impression of each other."
"I don’t want to." "Neither do I."
Lina and Vivian responded without hesitation. Catherine thumped the armrest of the chair heavily and said angrily, "Of course I don’t want to either, but according to the current situation, it’s an inevitable outcome. If we all can sincerely treat him as we used to, the conflict naturally wouldn’t exist at this point. So now, it’s not a matter of wanting or not wanting, it’s a matter of capability. Can all of us, can you, can I, can every one of us do it?"
The three girls fell into silence. Nobody answered. None of them dared to say they could do it, because they all knew very well that they couldn’t. They couldn’t ignore the subtle changes and act as they used to.
"Sigh." Catherine let out a heartfelt sigh, her previously dignified posture slumped, and her body sank into the soft chair.
"So, what I’m saying is, I don’t really understand." Freya, who came in with everyone, went straight to the mini bar near the dining room. At least half of the bottles in the wine cabinet were broken, but happily, they weren’t what she came for. After rummaging around on the messy bar, Freya found an exquisite metal teapot and skillfully brewed a pot of black tea. She brought it to the living room and poured a cup for each of the worried girls. Then took her cup, went to the broken window, looked at Pannis sitting in the sea, and asked softly, "I don’t understand what your three problems are, are you angry at him for deceiving you? Are you blaming him for this?"
"How could it be." Lina said in a muffled voice, still hiding her face under the book, "You know, not asking about the past is a rule in our house. He never said anything for certain about himself, so there was no deception."
"Then I’m even more confused." Freya seemed genuinely puzzled, tilting her head as she asked, "What did you think he was before?"
"We always thought he might be a legendary master who’s suffered a heavy mental blow." Catherine answered, "We believed so up until yesterday. We never thought he could be something extraordinary, like a demigod."
"Is there a difference?" Freya asked again, "A mentally unstable Legendary Master has simply become a mentally unstable demigod—that might just necessitate a little adjustment to the estimate of his power. Is all the fuss really necessary?"
"It’s not as simple as that. The difference is huge, just like... just like..." Lina thought for a while, and finally found a fitting analogy, "It’s like you previously thought a relative by your side was a Pope who’s lost his faith, but one day you suddenly realize that’s not the case at all. They’re not merely a Pope, but a deity walking among mortals."
"Yes, it’s something like that." Catherine and Vivian nodded at the same time, "After all, the differences between legends and demigods are huge."
"I didn’t feel that way." Freya gently blew on the tea cup cradled in her hands before softly saying, "To me, they’re the same."
"Of course. Your father is one of the demigods." Catherine wryly replied, "You see him every day. You naturally wouldn’t feel the same as us."
"Big sister." Vivian sat up and turned to Catherine, "Isn’t your grandfather the same?"
"I don’t have any memory of my grandfather." Catherine said, "I wouldn’t feel the same as Freya."
"See? That’s the problem." Freya pointed out, "You can’t alter your perception. Whether they are demigods, legends, or ordinary people, they are not different to family and friends. The real question is: Have you considered him part of the family? Or how do you see him in your hearts?"
"He’s like an older brother to me. Even though he may sometimes appear foolish, he’s always been good to me. Whenever I felt suffocated, he would chat with me. Whenever I was unhappy, he would try to cheer me up. Whenever I was in trouble, he would fix things for me when I least expected it. He cared for me and looked after me like a brother. He did for me what you did. You’re my sisters, he’s my brother, and I’m the little sister." Vivian’s lips curved up as she spoke, her voice warm and joyful, "That’s the kind of feeling."
Catherine affectionately pinched Vivian’s face before speaking pensively, "It’s not quite the same for me. I’ve had three times in my life when I was at the brink of despair. The first time was during a rainy night when I was a child. I was lucky to have pulled through. The second time was in the sewer tunnels of The City of Innocence, and the third was not too long ago. In the last two instances, when I felt there was no way out, both times, it was his voice that I heard at the last moment of despair. So... well, I’m not quite sure how I feel about him."
"Big sister, your answer is cunning." Lina propped up her arms, hummed in dissatisfaction and said, "Everyone thinks I’m insane. Apart from you all, he was the first to accept my friends and consider me normal to a certain extent. He proactively understood and supported me. Also, in the ruins of Angus Village, he unsealed himself to save me while continuing to conceal his status. He had no intention of unsealing himself even under the current circumstances, so that’s testimony to its importance. So, my feelings toward him...hehe, I don’t know either."
"You’re as cunning as her." Freya rolled her eyes, gazed out of the window and said, "He’s back now, about to board the ship. This is your last chance to make up your minds."
"Maybe..." Catherine said uncertainly, "Should we clarify our inner conflict to him, in the hopes he might give us more time to adjust?"
"That’s probably not a bad idea." Freya sipped some reddish-black tea as she murmured, "But that’s just delaying the inevitable, isn’t it?"
Silence descended once more, the girls were full of wavering thoughts in their hearts, yet no one dared to break the silence. Only the sounds of beating hearts filled the quiet room.
