Chapter 404: Chapter 30 Catherine’s Battle Plan_1
The Holy Spirit Corridor, the only ground passage to the ancestral holy place. Every year, when it’s time to pay homage to the ancestors, people would carry offerings dedicated to their ancestors, proceeding along the Holy Spirit Corridor until they reach the lands of homage. After the bowing rituals are done, a priest from the clan would lead each family head through the Soul Tunnel, finally reaching the Ancestral Holy Place. As for the other clan members, they would devoutly kneel and wait in the place of obeisance until the rituals were over, then they would return to their own tribes. Over the years, countless Beastmen traveled back and forth in the Holy Spirit Corridor, leaving deep impressions on the land. Before the undead appeared, this valley, both its sides, had metallic oil lamps placed every ten meters apart. The nearby tribes who jointly worshiped the ancestor’s graveyard would each year assign a tomb guard to look after them, ensuring the lamps were alight year-round. Along the less than two kilometers long valley, there were stone benches placed every so often for elderly tribesmen who needed to rest during the journey.
But now, all of that had vanished, or, to be more precise, had become unrecognizable. With a hundred years passing, these oil lamps have corroded and peeled off in this humid grassland, and the stone seats have long been buried under dust. The Holy Spirit Corridor now, was completely filled with undead. Thousands of undead roamed restlessly in the corridor. The only sound in this world was the rasping noise of their bones grinding.
"It’s so comfortable." At the entrance of the Holy Spirit Corridor, a human voice echoed after many years. However, the undead in the corridor remained indifferent, as if they hadn’t detected anything, aimlessly wandering in place. A small head then peeked from the entrance in a half Materialised form, staying close to the canyon walls, spying fearfully into the interior with one eye, as if afraid of being discovered by the monsters inside.
"Brother and sisters, it’s scary in there." Little banshee Annie glanced a few times, fear washed over her, without looking back, she drifted into Catherine’s arms behind her, rubbing herself against Catherine, she said: "There’s a lot of skeletons in there, they’re countless. But, hehe, they didn’t discover me, I hid so well."
"No petting allowed." Catherine affectionately knocked Annie on the head, "You were not scared seeing so many skeletons last time, and now you’re scared, who would believe that? Alright, Annie’s the best, tell us, are there any other things inside beside the skeletons?"
"Right, especially if there are any corpses?" Pannis chimed in, "Or something like a corpse, holding a magic staff?"
"There aren’t any." Annie thought for a moment, shook her head earnestly, and said, "Definitely no, I’ve searched carefully. Only skeletons, no other monsters."
"That’s good." Catherine sighed with relief and had a glance with Pannis, who was resting on the ground, "Knowing that there is no Necromancer here is the best news I’ve heard today. If there was one, it would be a nightmare in this prolonged terrain."
"Since we confirmed it, let’s move now." Lina stroked the silver fur of her giant wolf, her legs tapping restlessly on the ground, she looked back at the entrance of the canyon and said, "The obstacles that I created using my magical abilities can only last for about ten minutes, because of their size. We need to go now; otherwise, we will be sandwiched by the enemy. Hey Pannis, from the moment we set foot here, I’ve been meaning to ask what are you scribbling on the ground so dedicatedly?"
"The shielding array you’ve seen before." Pannis finished the last stroke on the ground, dusted himself, and looked at the circular array he had drawn with satisfaction: "I used it back in Annie’s hometown. It’s an array specifically designed to block the vitality of the living beings. Although its effects are weaker on the upper rank undead, it can mask us as long as we don’t get too close."
"Then, that means the undead outside should disperse quickly since they won’t be able to detect our vitality." Lina’s eyes lit up, and she punched Pannis’s back and praised, "You really are thoughtful, no wonder you asked me to create obstacles using my terrain alteration magic."
"Marcia, are there any fork roads here?" Catherine started to organize her equipment, adjusting the position of each item so they could be used seamlessly. She tilted her head towards Marcia, seeing Marcia shake her head in response, she said: "Let’s confirm our objectives and actions one last time."
"Sure." Vivian leaned against her silver wolf, her giant backpack wide open. She was diligently taking out potion bottles and casting materials from the pockets all over her clothes, and replacing items inside her backpack. The aim was to adapt to the change of terrain from the grasslands to the canyon.
"First, Marcia will make a path using the ’Blade Storm’." Catherine cast her sight on Marcia first, "The last time you used the ’Blade Storm’, you advanced about... fifty meters?"
"It’s more than sixty meters." Marcia, clad in a sleeveless top and a man’s pair of trousers, over which she wore a leather armor. Like everyone else, she polished her sword with a specialized tool, "The exact distance, I couldn’t tell. I didn’t make any precise judgment then, but it was around sixty meters."
"Let’s assume it’s sixty meters, just to be safe," Catherine said, "With Lina and Vivian’s Divine Powers and the sharp blades, advancing sixty meters should not be a problem."
"Yes, it shouldn’t be a problem." Marcia contemplated for a moment then confirmed, "No matter what, I will advance sixty meters. Even if Blade Storm can’t make it, I’ll find another way."
"Excellent. Next is Lina." Catherine was arranging everyone one by one, "After her, it’s me, then Marcia, then Lina again... This is roughly the strategy. Any questions, everyone?"
"Shouldn’t have any problems." Pannis was setting up some small tools to his limbs from his backpack, testing the flexibility by swinging his arms and kicking his legs. After confirming that the tools were tightly secured and did not affect his movement, he said, "I’m ready. We can go anytime."
"I have a problem. According to the plan, my mana might not be enough." Lina knelt halfway, the magic book fluttering in front of her, pages automatically turning themselves, one by one, until she finished reciting, only then would it turn to the next page.
"I’ve already given you the potion." Vivian strapped her backpack on again, "I’ve made a lot of potions, especially the mana recovery potions, enough for both of us to drink like water. I suggest that you drink a bottle before you start moving. After all, a vitality recovery potion needs three minutes to recover ten percent of mana. It is better to drink in advance and waste a little than to catch up later with insufficient mana."
"Alright, I’ll drink it as soon as Marcia breaks out." Lina said, "I also have no problem now. Diana has communicated with the monsters and they know how to cooperate with us."
"No problems, everyone?" Catherine looked around, then clenched her fist determinedly, "Marcia, now is the time. Charge!"
The five of them, along with their five wolves, all rushed out of the cloaking array, heading straight into the depths of the canyon. Only a few steps out, the undead in the canyon had already sensed the scent of the living. They stopped wandering aimlessly and charged towards where they came in, pumped by their loathing.
"Go for it." While running, Catherine suddenly stretched out her hand, pushing Marcia from behind. Marcia soared into the air, rushing into the horde of skeletons like before. Her giant sword propelled her body forward, spinning like a meat grinder and tearing a path made entirely of white bones as she advanced.
"In the name of Denia, divine spell, terraforming, stone formation." Lina knelt on the ground, holding the spell, and hit the ground with her silver hammer. An obscure force radiated from the ground, closely following Marcia’s steps. It traversed a sixty-meter distance and then suddenly erupted on the ground. Sixty meters away, the earth began to roil violently, and a three-meter wide rock began to rise quickly from beneath the surface. The rock grew to a height of seven or eight meters before ceasing, standing tall and unwavering like a column in a torrent.
As the rock rose, Catherine hoisted Vivian onto her back. Pannis slung his arm around Lina’s waist, and the two of them took off at top speed, following the path that Marcia had paved, heading straight for the massive rock sixty meters away. As they approached the rock, Pannis suddenly lifted his hand, and a grappling hook shot out from his wrist, catching onto the cliff face above. Both Pannis and Catherine held tightly onto the grapple and swung, landing steadily on the top of the rock. As soon as they stabilized, Pannis released the grapple and shot out another from his other wrist. It coiled around the waist of Marcia, who had just stopped spinning, and pulled her up onto the rock.
The space on the rock was rather small, only three meters in diameter. Vivian and Lina stood back to back in the center, while the remaining three formed a triangular guard around them, protecting them from the ranged attacks of the archers. Below the rock, the five giant wolves circled, mercilessly smashing or outright killing any skeleton that approached the rock, doing their utmost to ensure the rock was not attacked.
"Pssht," the sound of a feathered arrow resonating in the air. From Pannis’ hand, the arrow hit a bone knight that was about to attack a wolf, landing right in the framework of its shoulder, causing its attempted swing with the horse-cutting saber to be involuntarily deflected by half a meter. It failed to injure the Silver Wolf and only hit the ground, sparking a string of sparks. The Silver Wolf, which was the target of the attack, took the opportunity to knock the bone knight down and quickly move its sharp claws. After a few high-speed swings, the skull of the bone knight could no longer hold up, shattered and ruined, and the body completely lost the ability to struggle, reducing back into a pile of white bones.
The undead swarmed towards the giant rock but strangely couldn’t attack the people on top of it. Just when they were in a frenzy, a prayer with a strong taste of life and sacred power came out of Lina’s mouth. (To be continued.
