Chapter 400: Chapter 26: Instant Kill_1
A dull thumping impact echoed as the charging Catherine collided with the amassed skeletons. The bronze and iron-ranked skeleton soldiers couldn’t obstruct Catherine at all. She didn’t even need to use her shield for defense, as their rusted swords naturally broke or deflected upon her scaled armor. Even if they managed to cut at the Silver Wolf beneath her, they couldn’t break through the natural defenses of its fur.
The Silver Wolves, carefully selected by Diana for this mission, were the strongest of the wolf pack with the exception of the pack leader. Each one was a Gold Rank magical beast, their strength and speed not inferior to a Gold Rank Warrior. Despite being magical beasts and thus unable to harness Aggression, their fur provided powerful defense, serving as their own Aggression Shield. Simply from a defensive standpoint, they far surpassed humans who could not activate their shields. So, against the skeletons’ attacks, the giant wolves didn’t even bother dodging, brushing off each hinderance with ease.
Riding on the back of a wolf, Catherine kept her eyes firmly fixed on the Bone Knight surrounded by skeletons at the center. The Bone Knight in front of her was the lowest ranked among these undead, only being at the Silver Rank. However, having never fought high-ranked undead before, Catherine was not aware of their specific abilities. Hence, she dared not belittle them and was fully focused on preparation.
Five meters behind Catherine, Lina and Marcia followed, one on each side. Neither of them had ever fought from horseback, and the mounts they rode now were wolves, not saddled horses. But with professional strength, they clamped their legs tightly onto the wolf’s back to secure themselves. They instinctually brandished their weapons. Suffice to say, their foes were weak. Facing a group of Gold Rank professionals, dozens of low-rank skeletons simply could not utilize their advantage of overwhelming numbers. Even if Lina and Marcia swung their weapons haphazardly, the force on their weapons could easily shatter their opponent’s skeletons and crush their skulls. Fortunately, both of their weapons were heavy ones, making this crushing task even smoother.
Mr. Pannis accompanied Vivian, following at a relaxed pace. Every once in a while, he released an arrow. The feathered arrow glided lightly, neither too fast nor too slow, much like his own pace. But each shot, each feathered arrow, no matter how odd the angle, would accurately pierce the eye sockets of the left-over skeletons, extinguishing the Soul Fire burning within them.
As for Vivian, she boredly lay on the Silver Wolf’s back, constantly rubbing her cheek against the warm and soft fur of the giant wolf. The comfortable feeling made her nearly moan blissfully. If Silver Wolves could express human emotions, it would have surely looked helpless right now.
The sounds of impact were continuous. The skeletons that were blocking the way were being taken out one by one. The skeleton riding a boned goat, belonging to an unknown race, held a huge horse-cutting saber in its snowy-white arm. Seeing Catherine drawing closer, it slowly lifted the saber.
"Fearless." Catherine held her shield in front of her, raising her one-handed sword high. "Charge."
The sprinting Silver Wolf was suddenly taken aback as it found its speed greatly increasing. Everything around them seemed to slow down. Each step it took placed it in front of its enemy, and its keen sense of smell could already detect the foul odor unique to the dead souls.
If they were facing an intelligent being, they surely would have been startled and panicked by Catherine’s rapidly approaching speed. However, they were facing the Bone Knight, a creature devoid of consciousness and surviving purely on instinct. Upon seeing its enemy enter its attack range, it showed no surprise or hesitation. The fires in its eye sockets burned with a strange light as the horse-cutting saber plunged down with the whistling wind.
"Watch out." Mr. Pannis suddenly cried out.
With a loud "clang", the two horse riders collided heavily. There was a brief pause, and then the Bone Knight - along with its mount - was shattered by the great impact. The white bones scattered in all directions, the Soul Fire extinguished, the Power of Death no longer able to bind the skeletons. The moment the collision occurred, the horse-cutting saber heavily slashed on the timely raised Falcon Shield. The enormous force caused Catherine’s shield-bearing left hand to sink noticeably, yet the strike was successfully blocked. Simultaneously, Catherine’s one-handed sword, taking advantage of the Bone Knight’s rigid slash, curved in an arc and penetrated its eye socket.
"What happened?" Only after both riders separated did Catherine have spare time to turn her head back. She had initially planned to break out of the enemy’s encirclement but didn’t expect her attacks to be so successful. A single attack reduced the enemies to just over a dozen skeletons - it would take no effort to wipe them out, giving her much leisure time. "Why did you suddenly yell out?"
"You just took a full-strength swing from it." Instead of answering, Mr. Pannis questioned. "How did it feel?"
"It was alright, I guess. I purposely didn’t dissolve the strike because I wanted to test its strength," Catherine recalled and answered. "The force was quite substantial, and it went unhindered. Other than that, nothing else stood out."
"Well, it seems you really are the nemesis of the Bone Knights." Mr. Pannis laughed dryly, sighing. "The two strongest abilities of the Bone Knights have been completely nullified by you."
"Two abilities?" Catherine was taken aback, asking in confusion. "I didn’t notice that at all."
"So I told you to restrain them." Pannis shook his head and sighed, explaining, "They have two abilities. First, when they are close to their enemies, they can emit the ’Light of Fear’ from their eyes. Those affected by it will have their inner fear of them magnified many times over. Many weak-willed will often lose their will to fight because of this, and even if they continue fighting with a strong will, they will still be affected by fear. Their second ability is their cut, powered by fear. The more afraid of them one is, the greater the power they bear, the more severe the injuries suffered will be. That is to say, if you had been afraid of it just now, that slash might have stricken you right off the wolf’s back."
"Is it really that exaggerated?" Catherine blinked her eyes, asking incredulously, "Even people stronger than them would be affected?"
"Yes, it is irrelevant to strength. The strong can neutralize this advantage of the Bone Knight through their own power, but they will inevitably be affected anyway." Pannis turned his head and said quietly, "In my lifetime, I have only seen one person who is not affected by the Bone Knights. I did not expect you to be the second one. It must have been really hard for you, you never feel fear in battle."
"Of course." Catherine puffed out her chest, saying proudly, "Knights are always fearless."
"Mr. Pannis, here you go." While the two were talking, Lina and Marcia had already cleaned up all the skeletons and even retrieved Pannis’s feather arrows that were shot out, returned by Marcia, "We probably won’t have supply replenishment along the way, it would be good to reuse resources that can be reused."
"Thank you." Pannis put away the feather arrows and looked into the distance. In the distant mountains, vague human-like shadows could be seen moving in large groups. It was clear that those loafing around in such places could not be humans, "Looks like we have to go according to our previous plan and blast our way in. Otherwise, looking at this number, if we break in little by little, we could probably complete the task by this time next year."
"If you want to break in, we need to speed up." Catherine looked worriedly at Vivian, "Can you hold on?"
"Don’t worry about me." Vivian smiled at Catherine, "It’s just this level of bumpiness, I’ve already felt it just now, there’s absolutely no problem holding on."
"Bullshit." Pannis urged the Silver Wolf on, picked her up from the wolf’s back as he passed by Vivian, and carried her on his back. While running forward, he yelled, "At a time like this, pushing yourself hard has no meaning, maintaining the best battle condition is the most important thing. It’s all fine now, everyone speed up, let’s strike at our fastest pace."
Lina mimicked Diana’s howl, and the Silver Wolves started together, charging into the mountains at a speed similar to chasing prey. Vivian, lying on Pannis’s back, maintained a dazed expression for a while before her face slowly softened, relaxed the muscles in her neck, and rested her face against Pannis’ back, even lightly closing her eyes. Although she was still on the back of a wolf, the sensation was different from riding a wolf herself. Pannis, beneath her, used the strength of his waist and legs to skillfully neutralize the jolting caused by the running beast, preventing it from transmitting from the waist to the upper body, keeping his upper body mostly stable. Therefore, the bumpiness that Vivian felt at this moment was extremely mild, even more comfortable than sitting on a carriage, completely unlike riding on a wolf’s back.
Soon, the others caught up and the five wolves naturally formed a V formation, moving rapidly across the ground. They encountered many Undead Skeletons along the way, but the slow-moving skeletons had no chance of catching up with the speed of the five wolves. Sometimes, when the skeletons had just turned around, the five had already ridden their Silver Wolves far away. Even if some skeletons were drawn by the vitality and wanted to catch up with them, there was no chance for the skeletons to catch up with the galloping Silver Wolves with their legs alone.
Riding across the plains is a very enjoyable thing. Feeling the strong wind on your face, watching the ever-receding scenery around you, the passion and impulse brought on by speed is like the sweetest poison. It fills people’s hearts with fear but the thrill is irresistible, making them want to join the race.
"Ya-hoo." Pannis let out a long howl, charging out into the wind on the prairie, followed closely by Catherine, her black hair flowing in the air, leaving behind a peal of silver bell-like laughter.
"We can’t dodge anymore." Catherine yelled, "Now there are more and more stacks of undead, don’t drop out, let’s rush together."
"No problem, let’s charge." Lina responded loudly, "For the completion of the mission."
"For the mission!" (To be continued. If you like this work, welcome to qiidian.com to vote for recommendation, monthly ticket, your support is my biggest motivation. Mobile users please go to m.qidiian.com to read.)
