Chapter 369: Chapter 80: Falling Curtain_1
The ongoing gruesome scenes had left all the guests in the hall quivering with fear. When finally someone no longer could hold their nerve and slipped quietly towards the exit, others rapidly caught on and followed suit, tiptoeing away without as much as a breath, fearfully. No one paid them any mind as they slipped out the doors, as to whether they would experience a second shock due to the horrific outside wasn’t worth thinking about anymore.
The way Ruthlessness was gruesomely fragmented, several team leaders were watching Pannis with strange expressions. In reality, if you viewed it intuitively, Ruthlessness died at his own hand. If Pannis himself had the string, even if Ruthlessness didn’t activate the Aggression Shield, Pannis wouldn’t have been able to achieve this effect. But after designing a trap like this, it didn’t surprise anyone that these results occurred under Ruthlessness’s full speed impact.
What really surprised everyone was the placement of the trap. When the trap appeared, people had already guessed that setting this trap in the thirty seconds of darkness was an expected move. But the fact that the trap’s specific location indicated that Pannis had accurately predicted the future course of the situation, accurately predicted that Ruthlessness would attempt to flee and had set up an obstacle of death on his shortest escape route. Being able to do this indicated that everyone seemed to be part of his calculations.
"You guys are overthinking." Pannis shrugged, yawned and said casually, "The reason I set the trap there was because he would choose that way to escape if he needed to. As for whether he would run or not... if he didn’t run, I’d just force him to run. It’s such a simple thing."
Several team leaders finally took one last deep look at Pannis, as if they didn’t hear his explanation at all, completely ignoring him. Pannis pouted, disappointed, he pulled a chair and ran back to the now empty dance floor, shouting, "We rarely attend balls, teammates, are you not planning to dance?"
The other ten teammates watched him bounce around the dance floor with a ’you-must-be-crazy’ look in their eyes, but Enbow couldn’t bear it any longer and stepped forward saying, "I will dance with you."
"Don’t come over, ah." Pannis shot up like a rabbit from his spot, stumbled back to Catherine’s side, and snapped back, "I suddenly don’t want to dance at all."
"So these are the adventurers appointed by the two lords?" Elegance adjusted his hat and said with a polite smile, "They certainly seem quite reliable, haha."
"Whether they look reliable or not, as long as they are dependable when they handle their tasks, that’s enough." Indulgence placed his hand on Passion’s stomach, helping her manage her wound, "Just like now, no one can say they’re not reliable, right?"
"Regardless," Suspicion no longer carried an act of weakness like before, his wounds, even untreated, didnt hinder his movements, he spoke with a calm demanour, "We should congratulate Lords Indulgence and Passion, they have fulfilled the president’s mission. They have successfully exposed the treachery of Ruthlessness and Curiosity, and served them their just punishments."
"So what?" Indulgence looked at Suspicion, giving him a deceiving smile, "Lord Suspicion, you have something to say, why don’t you say it?"
"But, I believe the two lords must also be aware that it’s quite impossible to complete such a task all by oneself," Suspicion taps his fingers on the table, speaking calmly, "This successful operation is inseparable from everyone’s effort. We are all contributors to the victory."
"Like whom?" Indulgence’s gaze was as sharp as a blade, staring at Suspicion, "Like Lord Suspicion yourself?"
"Of course not." Suspicion stood up smiling, walked towards a man that had been ignored by everyone, patted his shoulder and said, "Allow me to introduce the largest contributor of this mission who revealed the traitors, Mr. Joseph."
*Snap* At the distant sound of this, Catherine trembled as she was cleaning the thin sword, and the tough weapon broke at its base. Slowly turning her head, Catherine saw Pannis was looking blankly at the team leaders in the distance, his face was numb, devoid of expression.
Indulgence’s face darkened slowly, glanced at the frowning Madness, and then at Passion who was half unconscious, scoffed and said, "So, it seems like we have all been deceived. Looks like Lord Suspicion really thought far ahead."
"I had my suspicions about Ruthlessness’s behavior a few months ago, but I never had any proof." Joseph stood upright, like a proud soldier being inspected by a higher authority. Suspicion walked around Joseph, telling the team captains, "But then, two months ago, the opportunity came. Ruthlessness secretly tried to tempt Joseph to betray me and join him, unfortunately for him, Joseph informed me that very day. Under my instruction, Joseph faked his alliance with Ruthlessness, revealing to me that Ruthlessness was the traitor. So, Joseph, who willingly shouldered the stigma of the betrayer, is the real hero."
"Hehe, Lord Suspicion’s hard work is indeed admirable."Indulgence’s normally smiling face was now cold, his eyes were dark as he stared at Suspicion, "You had laid out this trap so long ago, but if it’s like that, I wonder who instructed Joseph to contact the cult members, was it Ruthlessness, or was it Lord Suspicion?"
"Of course it’s brutal. I would never betray the Guild, so I personally killed those cultists." Suspicion said with a sense of pride, "I think, Elegance would certainly understand my painstaking efforts, right?"
Elegance’s pupils constricted, glanced at Indulgence and Passion, and then at Madness who was blushing standing beside them. He gently nodded, "Yes, I believe in Suspicion’s explanation. Joseph’s loyalty to the Guild is commendable."
"You see." Suspicion shrugged towards Indulgence, "Elegance understands, I believe Madness can understand too."
"Understand?" Madness, looking dazedly ahead but seemingly seeing nothing. Ever since she fought with Ruthlessness, Madness had been in a constant state of obliviousness, and no one knew whether she was lucid or mad. Not until Suspicion mentioned her name did she regain her senses and chuckled, "Why should I understand you? Can you give me the sort of joy as him?"
Suspicion’s expression became tangled. The most headache-inducing thing in this world is a real madman because you can never comprehend them using a normal person’s thinking. Of the seven captains, only five were left. Under the tight alliance of Indulgence and Passion and the subtle control from outsiders, the remaining three captains needed to team up to ensure no harm to their interests. Elegance was clear about the status quo, so he responded immediately. But Suspicion never thought that Madness, at such a crucial moment, would ignore the power struggle and revert to madness again.
But Suspicion did not hesitate for long. He quickly said, "Passion doesn’t seem to be in a good state, especially after suppressing her wounds just now, how long can she keep going?"
Indulgence immediately fell silent. This was her biggest weakness now. The situation seemed like three against two, but in reality Passion could not re-engage in battle in the short term. She had to stay close to Passion to protect her, so no matter how long she held on, nothing could really change. Suspicion and Elegance could easily leave with Joseph without any chance that they would kill him on the spot. If they couldn’t kill Joseph on the spot, the goal of sharing the gambling zone this time would be hard to achieve in the short term. As for seeking help from Catherine and the others again, Indulgence never even considered it. They intervened to deal Ruthlessness because they were asked to find the traitor, an adequate reason. But if they intervene now, that would mean they are obviously getting involved in the captains’ internecine struggle, which would endless trouble for Catherine and others.
After a long silence, Indulgence gently squeezed Passion’s hand and sighed, "If so, then congratulations to Lord Suspicion. Not only did he avoid losses because of betrayal, but he also successfully participated in the extermination of the traitors."
"Hahaha, thank you thank you." Suspicion finally laughed from his heart, "Today’s operation is a success, but it seems that Passion has been seriously injured. We will not bother Lord Indulgence in her treatment now. Elegance, would you like to take a walk in the night?"
"My honor." Elegance rose, took off his hat, and gracefully bowed as he said, "But there is one thing I must remind Lord Suspicion."
"Hmm?" Suspicion had a bad feeling, and inquired, "Please say, Lord Elegance."
"These cultists are very fierce." Elegance said calmly, leaning his cane against the floor, "Because they are refuges of this world, they are cautious in doing things, they usually impose a curse on their collaborator. If the collaborator betrays them or other issues occur, the cultist can trigger the curse to take the collaborator’s life for the purpose of silencing."
Suspicion was taken aback, hastily turned his head towards Joseph, and as soon as he turned, he saw Joseph’s head explode like a balloon. Red blood and white brain splatter flew around, sticking him full of it.
"Hehe, just like that." Elegance said, smiling mildly, while using his cane to poke at a piece of skull shard splashed in front of him, "However, all the cultists have been killed by Lord Suspicion, then who activated the curse?"
Suspicion clenched his fists and stood dumbly in place, only after thirty seconds he exhaled heavily and adjusted his face again. He nodded and said, "So be it, today’s meeting will end here, I propose we hold a seven-person meeting, no, a five-person meeting, in three days."
"Then, see you again in three days." Elegance once again took off his hat and bowed, then walked slowly to the window and disappeared into the night.
"I learned a lot from Lord Elegance this time, thank you." Suspicion said with a clenched smile and walked out of the meeting room without looking at anyone else. (To be continued.
