Chapter 339: Chapter 51: Construction of the Teleportation Array Channel_1
"The soldiers spent a whole day digging before they managed to find the secret chamber," the priest of the wind god continued, "The last explosion almost completely collapsed the fifteen-meter downward passage, but fortunately, the underground chamber was entirely made of brick and stone, so it was not heavily affected by the explosion. Fortunately, more than half of the chamber was preserved intact. There, we found the most critical clue."
"It was a bi-directional Teleportation Array, with no way to determine where it led. Moreover, because we didn’t have a mage in the team, we couldn’t understand what was happening on the other side of the array, didn’t know if there would be ambushes, so everyone thought this was a bit of a nuisance."
"But thankfully, at this point, Mr. Pannis stepped forward and volunteered to take on the task of scouting. We initially disagreed, as Mr. Pannis was probably the weakest in combat among us all, but he insisted that none of us were as adept at dealing with danger as he was. And for some unknown reason, even Muir, our most robust combatant, supported Mr. Pannis’ proposition, so we had to let him take the lead."
"Luckily, there were no dangers on the other side of the Teleportation Array. Instead, there was a natural underground tunnel. The several kilometer-long tunnel had no branches, no magical beasts, only common wild beasts. The most significant problem of the tunnel was its utter darkness, and as a result, Mr. Pannis returned swiftly."
"After that, we spent the rest of the night preparing for the trip based on the list put together by Mr. Pannis and Sage Helena. After one night’s rest, the real underground exploration started the next day. I won’t lie to you, I might be Gold Rank, but For me, Ben, and Enbow, who are all from the Temple Faction and have hardly ever participated in this kind of exploration into the unknown, this was a new experience. It was a mix of excitement and nerves, to the point that I couldn’t sleep the whole night, only managing to drift off when dawn was near."
"Understandable," Catherine responded with a nostalgic smile, "I also spent the entire night rolling around in bed from excitement on my first adventure."
"Being underground for your first adventure isn’t exactly the most pleasant experience. But even so, I will never forget the days we spent there." Teresa responded with a light smile. However, it wasn’t her usual professional, comforting, clergy-like smile but rather a genuine one, "After entering the underground tunnel, we discovered that the exit of the Teleportation Array was at the end of that tunnel. We explored along the way using our prepared lighting equipment, but couldn’t find any trace of intruders. Fortunately, we discovered a second Teleportation Array at the end of that tunnel."
"Wait a moment," Vivian interrupted Teresa’s narration, furrowing her brows as she asked, "The two Teleportation Arrays you encountered, both didn’t have a Mana Frequency Lock?"
A Mana Frequency Lock is a special kind of array setup skill, designed specifically for use with Teleportation Arrays. Once this precaution is put into place, the array can only be activated by using magical fluctuations with a unique frequency; otherwise, even the most potent mage can’t activate it. This measure is usually applied to most teleportation arrays. Frequently, designing an array and setting up a frequency lock has become an instinct for most mages unless some public service arrays are kept unguarded.
"No," Seeing as Teresa lacked knowledge about arrays, Muir, who had somewhat of a mage’s experience, answered for her, "Mr. Pannis and I also wondered why such crucial artifacts would be left unprotected by frequency locks and concluded that a few reasons may apply. First, this location might not be as important as we imagine, so tight security measures aren’t required. Second, the enemy is an organization with many people who may have access to these arrays, so no lock is set to facilitate usage by members. Third, when the enemy was evacuating, it was probably meant to destroy the arrays, but we caught them on the hop. We discovered the arrays in the short time frame between the Legendary Rank mage’s evacuation and the destruction of the arrays by the Gold Rank professionals. No matter what the reason was, we were successful in moving forward using the arrays. The journey was long, and we crossed four arrays, all set in enclosed spaces, not allowing any way to judge where we were. We could only continue to explore. Some spaces were like the first tunnel, only a few kilometers long with no branches, but some were massive, complex subterranean cave systems with long distances and numerous branches, which were very difficult to navigate, even with strong light."
"We were the main troublemakers, as we lacked the expertise in exploring enclosed underground spaces using lighting equipment. We made several blunders, and at one point, I even got lost." Teresa blushed a bit but openly shared her experiences, "Luckily, Mr. Pannis found me using sound, or else I would have starved to death in that massive cavern."
"Using the first four Teleportation Arrays, we transversed natural tunnels. But for the fifth time, we entered a wholly man-made space. The fifth teleportation point led us to a large underground room, completely sealed off with bricks, without any passages. The room only contained two arrays, one left and one right, and no other objects."
"Sealed off?" Vivian was intrigued, "Then what about air ventilation? Did it feel stuffy?"
"The walls should have been equipped with arrays for air exchange, or there were small ventilation holes leading to the surface." Pannis interjected, "It wasn’t stuffy at all there."
"I see." Vivian nodded, "Please continue."
"The sixth time, we also came across a similar sealed room." Teresa continued, "Mr. Pannis believed that the enemies couldn’t find suitable natural underground spaces to use, so they had to spend considerable effort constructing these two underground chambers. We were astounded when we arrived at a surprising space on our seventh teleportation."
"What do you mean by ’space’?" asked Catherine, looking around, sudden realization in her eyes. "This place?"
"No, not exactly here, but very close," Teresa answered. "It probably belongs to the same period or is connected. Mr. Pannis believes it was created by goblins, probably their sewers, but I never knew sewers could be built on such a scale."
"I will explain that to you later, Miss Teresa," Catherine said. "But if Pannis guessed right, this is indeed the goblins’ sewer system."
"Well, that doesn’t really matter," Teresa laughed. "The first sewer section we passed was short, curvy, and about five kilometers long. Oddly enough, both ends of the sewer were broken abruptly, leaving twisted, torn marks on the surface as if someone had forcefully snapped it. Just as before, the teleportation arrays were placed at both ends of the sewer. After teleporting once more, we found ourselves in another sewer, but this one covers a much larger area. Although it’s not as big as the one we’re in now, it is significantly larger compared to any of the underground spaces we’ve passed before."
"It was there that we encountered our first attack," Teresa’s voice trailed off, clearly flashbacking to unpleasant memories. "Those cleaner puppets attacked us."
"You know the name of those puppets?" Vivian looked at Catherine, bewildered. Catherine understood her confusion. They knew those were cleaner puppets because Indulgence had told them. But how could this group know that too? They surely didn’t have that privilege."
"Actually, I did not know that before," Teresa said. "But Mr. Pannis told us what these puppets are called."
"Pannis?" Vivian looked at Pannis, perplexed. "How did you know?"
"They told me," Pannis replied nonchalantly as if he’d done something trivial. "Did you forget? I’m quite familiar with the goblin language, and I can read and listen normally. The cleaner puppets always drone on and on every time they appear, and part of their babbling actually reveals their type and properties."
"The goblin language... what a pain." Vivian complained. "Continue, I won’t interrupt anymore."
"These cleaner puppets weren’t too strong and didn’t pose much of a challenge," Teresa continued. "But the area was extremely vast. We spent more than a day and a half wandering around before we found the array leading to the next passage. However, since it was late, we decided to find a place to rest for the night and continue the next day."
"After the proposal was unanimously accepted, we started searching for a place to stay. It was during this search that we uncovered a huge secret."
"A secret?" Catherine curiously asked. "What did you find?"
"Well, I would not exactly call it a secret," Teresa corrected herself after a moment’s thought. "We found a corner of a Goblin City."
At the first part of Teresa’s sentence, both Catherine and Vivian had leaped to their feet in excitement. But their exhilaration plummeted again at her next words. In terms of historical significance, a complete goblin city is on a whole other level compared to just one corner of it, which explained the duo’s emotional rollercoaster. (To be continued.
