Chapter 338: Chapter 50 Short Battle _1

"This should be the place." Pannis peeped out from behind the bare tree trunk, pointing his mouth at a building about ten meters away: "If I’m not mistaken, this should be the country villa mentioned in the secret letter."

"There are only four people here now?" Lina squeezed out from Pannis’s side, poking her head out and speaking: "If there are only four people, it should be easy to handle."

"Unless there’s an accident, it should be so." Pannis said uncertainly: "At least that’s what is written in the secret letter."

"Should we take this opportunity to assault them?" Enbow flicked the sword hanging on the right side of his body and asked in a low voice: "If there are only four people, this is a great opportunity."

"I’m afraid there might be more than four people inside, it might be a trap set for the trackers." Teresa, a priestess of the Wind God, spoke somewhat worriedly: "And we don’t know if a big fish will come back, if we go in and get rid of the murderers now, we might miss out on the big fish."

"I’m afraid there’s no big fish left." Pannis shook his head regretfully: "According to several secret letters combined, this is probably their last operation."

"What?" Several people stared at Pannis in unison, their eyes scorching: "How do you know?"

"It’s deduced from a few casual sentences in the secret letter." Pannis didn’t explain his deduction process in detail, but directly stated the conclusion: "According to their original plan, they will completely withdraw after this is over. As for why there are still several Gold Rank people here, it should be for handling some finishing work, like killing witnesses. So, there’s not much possibility of catching a big fish, on the contrary, if we don’t make a decision fast, we may even let the small fish slip away."

"If that’s the case, we need to act." Everyone didn’t doubt Pannis’s words, all could see that although Pannis often fools around, he is serious when handling real issues and is highly trustworthy. Everyone accepted Pannis’s conclusion without an explanation of his deduction process, and pondered: "We have to stop them before they completely escape, otherwise we’ll lose all our leads and let them escape punishment again."

"But we don’t have a detailed layout of the house." Ben, a Fist Fighter and follower of the Wind God, started wrapping bandages around his hands - the special profession he was in needed to maximize their potential, small items like knuckle dusters and punch spikes couldn’t be used. "It’d be best to know their locations in advance for a targeted assault, this would make it totally foolproof."

A dull thud came from the villa, and to their surprise, Marcia was gone before they knew it. At the villa’s front door, a large dark hole appeared like a gaping mouth, mocking the others.

"Well, worthy of a follower of the war god, she got impatient and has already gone in." Pannis felt awkward for a moment, and said with a wry smile: "Let’s go, catch up."

Pannis knew in his heart that Marcia didn’t act just out of impatience. Marcia, who had been living with wild animals in the wilderness for years, developed an animal-like instinct, which drove her actions intuitively. From not long after they met, Marcia completely trusted Pannis and Lina’s commands without refusal. This may seem foolish, but considering Pannis’s undisclosed identity with plenty of adventure experience and Lina’s saintly character, this complete trust maximized her safety and benefits. So her intuition made this judgment, and she did accordingly.

The same incident happened this time too. Marcia’s instinct told her that a direct assault was the best choice, and that any delay would cause trouble. So Marcia, who wasn’t used to interacting with others, didn’t think to tell anyone and boldly charged into the villa.

"Boom," the people in the villa didn’t hesitate at all towards the intruder. At the sound of the door breaking, a large magic spell was directly launched, and soon the sounds of fighting erupted inside the villa. Marcia’s giant sword was more like a siege hammer in the interior of the villa, and the fight looked more like a demolition job. Less than twenty seconds had passed since Marcia broke in, and already three chunks of furniture and a column from the room had smashed through the window and flown out of the villa.

"That was close, thankfully I was alert." Pannis who was lazing by the window ducked, narrowly avoiding half a table flying through the air. He gave Lina, who he had pulled over to slack off with him, a proud smile. He poked his head out of the window again, only to be hit by the other half of the table coming his way.

"Indeed, you were alert." Lina nodded nonchalantly, holding up a thumb.

"Damn it." Pannis, rubbing his nose, was sprawled on the window, angrily watching the five versus four battles inside. Marcia’s initial assault had seriously injured one of the enemies, giving the battle an air of inevitability. Excluding the severely injured Mage, there were four Gold Rank enemies – another Mage and two Warriors – huddled desperately in one corner. However, Muir’s Legendary Rank power made all their resistance futile.

"No, get down." Pannis’ face suddenly changed while he was enjoying the spectacle. He forcefully pressed Lina down to the ground. Muir in the room also expanded his Mana Shield at the fastest speed to cover Teresa at his side. The other three professionals, hearing Pannis yell, hadn’t even fully responded before a loud explosion resonated, and their view was filled with a sea of red.

After the booming sound of the explosion, the wooden villa collapsed with a bang, turning into a scene of complete ruins. A large amount of dust rose as the villa fell, enclosing the entire area in a thick plume of smoke. It was a good ten seconds after the villa fell, and the edges of the ruins began to shake, a muddy Pannis and Lina, their heads covered in debris, crawled out from underneath a piece of waste wood. After a while, a few more heads also surfaced from the middle of the debris. Everyone was unharmed but covered head to toe in dirt, rendering their appearances unrecognizable.

"What happened?" The usually poised and elegant Wind Order Priestess, now looking utterly confused, asked: "What exploded?"

"It must have been a safety mechanism they had set up beforehand," Pannis replied forcefully, slapping the dust out of his short hair. This made Lina nearby choke and cough. It wasn’t until he was elbowed by Lina that he finally remained quiet. "It must have been a trap set with several High-energy Crystals right where they were defending. These people are ruthless, not just toward their victims, but even toward themselves. They would rather blow themselves up to keep their secrets than die, hoping to take us with them. I don’t know who their backer is, but it must be someone powerful, to make a bunch of Upper Rank professionals go to such lengths."

"No matter who is backing them, we have no way of finding out now." Enbow, who usually cared very much about his appearance, gave up cleaning himself, enduring the filth on his body, and said disappointingly, "Even if we wanted to conduct an autopsy, which sometimes can reveal some information, I don’t think those blown to bits could reveal anything."

"That’s not necessarily the case," Teresa pondered, looking at the spot where the four had huddled. "Perhaps they might have already revealed something useful before they were blown to bits?"

"Are you saying something is hidden there?" Everyone present were indeed not fools, and Enbow immediately understood the implications of Teresa’s words. But looking over, there was nothing but debris and two severed limbs, nothing else was visible. "Even if there were any clues there, after this blast, there could hardly be anything left."

"There must be something there." Pannis stepped onto the splintered wood and rubble, every step creaking eerily. "Those people ignited their safety devices, and I suspect their goal was not just to commit suicide or kill us. They were probably more interested in keeping their secrets. Otherwise, they could have placed their security devices in places where they could have done the most damage, not in that small corner. Therefore, there must be secret chambers, tunnels, hidden compartments and the like there. Why don’t we notify the lord now and send someone to excavate it? If we are lucky enough, we might even find some clues left."

"I’ve never been lucky," Enbow said grimly, but his previously charming face under the dust was now laughable. "So, I will go to inform the lord. You all stay here and guard against anyone coming to destroy the scene."

Watching Enbow run into the woods beside the villa—the horses they rode were hidden outside the forest—Muir looked at his group of ash-covered companions, saying helplessly, "Should we take turns washing up somewhere first?"

"Actually, I think we should try digging first," suggested Pannis, squatting on top of the pile of rubble and randomly poking at the debris on the ground. "By the time they send people, we may already have made discoveries."

"So you guys dug out what was left?" asked Catherine, finding it odd that else everyone had fallen silent. "Was there any problem?"

"Unfortunately, no." Pannis sighed, covering his face. "What we found underneath was a collapsed basement, fifteen meters deep. A troop of seventy or eighty soldiers came later, and after a day’s digging—virtually turning the house inside out—they finally uncovered it. If it was up to just us, even half a month would not be enough to succeed."

"A basement?" Catherine seemed to connect it with something, nudging Vivian and asking, "Why do you mages like to hide things in basements?"

"Huh? What are you talking about?" Vivian, who had been propping her chin in her hands and listening intently, blinked in confusion after Catherine’s nudge. She asked innocently, "Why what?"

"Never mind. There’s nothing. " Catherine covered her face and sighed. "Go on, what was in the basement?"(To be continued.
