Chapter 334: Chapter 46 Dinner_1

"Mmm, what’s this, it’s so tasty." Marcia ate with the dignified manner unique to clergy, but in the blink of an eye, she had already drunk three small bowls of appetizer soup, and then reluctantly put down the bowl and asked, "How do you make this? Let me know so I can make it myself when I’m out in the wild."

"Bone Soup." Pannis pointed seriously towards the sewer in the distance: "The ingredients are readily available."

"Pfft." The sound of spitting water immediately resonated, a group of people surrounding the fire gave Pannis an angry look, shifting their gaze between the bowl in their hands and the top of Pannis’s head. If they weren’t so reluctant to lose their soup, there would probably have been seven or eight bowls flying by now.

"Alright, alright, it’s simply soybeans with vegetables. However, I added a bit of the rich broth leftover from stewing beef yesterday." Pannis said begrudgingly under the threatening gazes of the others, "Actually, I really wanted to make Bone Soup."

"I’m hungry." Marcia stared at Pannis threateningly, "You promised."

"Don’t worry, you’ll be filled up." Pannis lifted the lid of the pot cooking on the fire, a strange aromatic scent wafted out. This smell contained the rich scent of butter and sweet honey, with a hint of the aroma of alcohol. The mixed scents were quite disconcerting to some, but irresistibly attractive.

"Hey, is this really okay?" Muir, sitting cross-legged on the ground, slapped his thigh angrily, "This is our elves’ secret meat sauce recipe, right? I don’t even know how to make it, how could you manage to?"

"That’s just because you’re too dumb." Pannis stirred the pot vigorously with a large spoon, dispersing the aroma more thoroughly: "Anyone could learn to make something of this level after watching a few times."

"Stop joking around. It’s one of the three dishes recognized as the most difficult to prepare among Elves, and you’re saying you learned it just by watching a few times?" Muir shook his fist furiously. "At least three of the ingredients need to be specially processed with energy within thirty seconds after being chopped. Moreover, for at least one hour while cooking, one must constantly control the Aggression in a specific spot in the pot. Anyone with the slightest deviation in control wouldn’t be able to accomplish it. Yet you’re telling me you learned it just by watching?"

"Hahaha, don’t worry about it," Pannis, whistling while looking very relaxed, responded in the manner of someone who didn’t hear anything: "Everyone, don’t pay attention to this elf who can’t even prepare basic survival food. We’ll be able to eat in a few minutes."

"Hey, don’t ignore my question, damn it." Muir, grinding his teeth, suddenly sniffed the air and curiously asked, "Wait, what’s this? You added something else, didn’t you? The scent is a bit off."

"Are you a dog?" Pannis, looking terrified, gazed at Muir. "How could you distinguish smells within such a complex aroma?"

"Damn it, your sense of smell is better than mine. If anybody smells like a dog, it’s you and not me!" Muir sniffed the air fiercely, his face revealing sudden enlightenment: "I see, it’s Sui Xin Grass and rainswift grass, isn’t it? But aren’t you afraid that adding these two herbs will ruin the original taste?"

"It’ll only have a little effect." Pannis shook his head: "They wouldn’t be able to taste the difference."

"But you’ve already exposed yourself by mentioning it." Muir covered his face and said, "Don’t worry, I’ll be praying for you at this time next year."

"What are those two herbs?" Catherine, who didn’t participate in the group’s pre-meal banter against the chef, asked Vivian, "What effect do they have?"

"This guy is really something." Vivian leaned on Catherine, speaking in her babyish yet tender voice: "Sui Xin Grass is one of the ingredients used to make Mana Recovery Potions. But few people know it has a special effect in certain environments: it can soothe the disturbances in Vitality and counteract mana backlash. This is quite an esoteric use, sometimes even I forget about it. As for rainswift grass, even fewer people are familiar with it. It’s a type of herb as well but has no corresponding potion; it can only work independently to soothe and stabilize souls. It’s a rarely needed benefit in one’s lifetime."

Catherine sighed lightly, holding her knees and staring at the luminescent crystal above, seemingly deep in her thoughts.

"This is our group, Catherine." Pannis began introducing everyone as he filled their plates with a heaping spoonful of brightly coloured, juicy meat sauce. The meat sauce was paired with a few slices of chicken soaked in a creamy sauce, accompanied by large pieces of leafy greens with water droplets hanging on their verdant leaves, which emitted a refreshing aroma. One corner of the plate held a few golden-brown pieces of toasted bread, a visual feast that immediately stimulated one’s appetite. As he served each portion of food, Pannis would introduce the name and identity of each person as a way of introducing those who were meeting for the first time: "Next to me is Vivian, the strongest offensive power of our adventure team. What? Why don’t you have chicken? Because this fish is for you. As for the last two guests, sorry, I don’t know them either, so you’ll have to introduce yourselves."

"Don’t bully people," Catherine gave Pannis a glare. The two maids had been eager to help out since they started setting up the camp, but they were firmly held back by Catherine. According to Catherine, the two maids had made no mistakes in the battle and did not abandon Catherine and Vivian to escape when it was crucial. Instead, they faced bravely like warriors. So now they have the right to enjoy the treatment of warriors rather than maids. Therefore, the two maids were just kneeling cautiously behind Catherine, pretending they didn’t exist.

At this point, due to Pannis’s words, the two felt a lot of pressure. Being born in the City of Innocence, the two inherently tried to avoid and feared the powerful. Often, a mere glance from a powerful figure could leave them, the lower class, inexplicably dead. Therefore, avoidance and obedience were the best ways for them to survive. Having worked as maids in the hotel for several years, they had both been temporary servants for many formidable figures, so they were not oblivious. But even so, this was their first time seeing so many upper-ranked professionals gathered together, which made them always feel dizzy and uneasy, not daring to raise their heads.

"Smack." Vivian slapped Mimosa’s back abruptly and said softly, "Stay straight, remember what I told you earlier? If you want to have a life outside, you must first conquer yourself. Throughout this, you have defeated yourselves using your actions in some aspects, now it is just another aspect, so be more courageous. Remember that even if you are only maids, you are now our maids. We will naturally protect you, so there is nothing to fear."

Mimosa took a deep breath, glanced at her sister, who looked conflicted, then suddenly straightened up her chest and raised her head slightly. With a trembling voice, she said loudly, "My name is Mimosa. I am a waiter at the Evergreen Hotel here and now serving as a temporary maid for Miss Catherine and Miss Vivian."

"And a guide." Vivian gave a satisfied smile and added, "They are living maps. Once they have taken a route, they won’t forget it. We don’t need a map with them in charge."

"I, I am Pansy and like my younger sister, I am also a temporary maid for Miss Catherine and Miss Vivian," Pansy, the elder sister, barely resisting the urge to hide behind Catherine, raised her head, but her eyes continued to stare at the ground. She said softly, "I am also a map, I mean, a guide."

"The Evergreen Inn of the City of Innocince?" Muir stirred his bread in the meat sauce and recalled, "I think I stayed there when I went to the City of Innocence the other day. Isn’t the boss Ennis? He seems to be one of the two organization leaders in the hotel district, the other one is called Jack. They are both in their thirties and now are silver-ranked professionals, yet they hide there."

"What’s wrong?" Noticing Pansy’s lips move as if she wanted to say something but dared not, Catherine couldn’t help but ask, "If you have any problems, just speak up. You don’t need to worry so much."

"I just want to say, this elf gentleman must be mistaken," Pansy said cautiously, "The boss is quite old."

"Don’t mind him." Pannis dismissively waved his hand, "When he said the other day, it was at least thirty years ago. You’ll get used to it."

"Wait, I just thought of a question," Lina felt something wasn’t right, and finally reacted, "Did you just say, ’here’ as in the Evergreen Hotel?"

"Yes." Pansy shrank back slightly and nodded, "Exactly here."

"So you mean, you think we are now in the City of Innocence?" Lina toyed with her silver hair and asked in confusion, "Are you sure you’re not mistaken?"

"We can’t be wrong," Catherine answered for Pansy, "Otherwise, where do you think this is?"

Of the seven who had just appeared, five were staring in astonishment, even forgetting to continue eating, only Marcia and Pannis remained calm. Marcia kept happily swallowing the bread soaked in delicious meat sauce and took a big gulp of sweet wine from the jug, as if she hadn’t heard this strange information at all. Pannis casually tore at his bread and calmly said, "You don’t need to be that surprised. Don’t forget, we’ve passed through so many Arrays. It’s not surprising to say this place is the City of Innocence. Even if someone says it’s the Elven Forest, who’s to say we’ll keep going around in the same area."

"Hmm, that does seem reasonable." Teresa, the golden priest of the Wind God Church, always maintained her manners during meals. She would put down her dinner plate, clean her lips before speaking, "But things are starting to get interesting. Why does it point here? The City of Innocence, hehe."

"Right, I haven’t asked you yet." Catherine finally remembered the question that she had been ignoring due to her desperate escape, and asked in confusion, "How did you guys appear here? You should have still been in Dearsaland."

"Hmm, it’s a long story," Pannis said leisurely, "To explain, we have to start from the beginning." (To be continued.
