"I’ve been wondering all the way." As she walked along the sidewalk, Catherine peered down into the drainage canal: "If the main body of the drainage is made of metal, how did the chain saw that was tens of meters long just then come out?"
"I guess there’s another larger space wrapped around the main body of the pipe, and these mechanical things are stored in that space. Of course, that’s just a guess, it could also be that these things are stored in a true sense of another space, and it’s not impossible to do it with goblin technology." Vivian sighed, somewhat regretfully: "I just researched it. No matter which guess, if you want to verify it, you need to break some pipes. But there’s a problem here, the current pipeline is buried 840 meters underground, and the action of breaking the pipeline requires huge explosive impact, which may cause a regional earthquake or even the collapse of the entire pipeline. Such a cost would be too great. And the outer layer is nothing more than some machinery. At least some of the known machinery here has been found in other relics before, and there’s nothing too special. To risk destroying the entire sewer for these already discovered machines is really not worth it."
"Indeed, not very worth it, and if it really causes a collapse..." Catherine thought about the area covered by the sewer, and said with a twitching mouth: "It might cause a land subsidence for hundreds of kilometers, it may also cause the Bylgas River to break or change its course, and it may even... uh, anyway, it’s better to keep it as it is."
"Wait a minute, we seem to have gone the same way." Pansy suddenly interrupted the discussion of the two, and said somewhat uneasily: "I should not have made a mistake."
"Huh?" Vivian paused, looked at the two maps for a long time, and said doubtfully: "No, from the map, this is a new parallel route to the one we just passed, not the original one."
"But the map was drawn by you, right? Couldn’t you have drawn it wrong from the start?" Catherine asked: "Even though you have the real-time map for reference, it’s sometimes hard to avoid such mistakes."
"It shouldn’t be." Vivian scratched her head and asked Pansy: "We can only confirm by going back to check. Are you sure we went the wrong way? If you are sure, we can go back and look for it."
"We can be completely sure." Mimosa answered very confidently on behalf of her sister: "We’ve never lost our way since we were young. As long as we passed a place once, we could remember it clearly, so we wouldn’t make a mistake."
"Let’s go back and take a look then." Vivian didn’t insist on her own position, and nodded: "Maybe it really is my mistake."
They walked back along the same route for half an hour until Vivian suddenly slapped her hand and pointed to a wall: "It seems I really made a mistake. The path on the real-time map refers to this, we missed this road."
The location Vivian pointed to was in a very hidden corner, a secondary pipeline, not much different in size from the main pipeline, but due to its angle and position, it was easily overlooked. When the four of them and a banshee passed by earlier, no one noticed it.
"Didn’t you notice it either, Annie?" Catherine clasped her hands across her chest, easily tapping Annie’s head: "Aren’t you following their scent?"
"Yes, this road and the one we just passed both have their residual scents, and I got mixed up." Annie giggled in reply: "They’re just too cunning. It’s not my fault."
"It seems Annie can only distinguish whether they have passed or not, and is unable to distinguish the intensity and residual time of soul resentment." Catherine said: "Then we have to be more careful when finding a way in the future, and try to avoid this situation."
"It seems you really weren’t exaggerating." Vivian looked at the maid sisters with admiration, gave a thumbs up: "It really saves a lot of effort to bring you down. By the way, can you draw maps? If you can, you can draw a paper map. In case we get lost again, we can find out in time."
"Thank you so much." The two sisters were very happy to be assigned work. They had developed the habit of not being easily abandoned as long as they were useful to others during their days in the City of Innocence, they finally relaxed upon realizing they could be useful and happily replied: "I’ll do it first, and I’ll switch with my sister every half an hour."
Turning into a concealed secondary channel, Annie happily informed everyone that they had not lost their targets because the scent of resentment persisted along the way. With that proven, Catherine, who was leading the group, resumed their pace, venturing deeper into the secondary channel. But less than ten minutes later, they heard a "beep" in their ears again.
"Uh, sounds like trouble again." After seeing the violent way the goblins cleared the drainage ditches, Catherine became sensitive to these warning sounds. As soon as she heard them, Catherine signaled her two maids to hide behind her, with Vivian and Catherine standing back to back, their eyes darting around looking for the source of the warning sound. After the beep, as Catherine had suspected, a lengthy string of indecipherable goblin language sounded from all around, the same as before, but spoken much faster.
"Did you get that?" Catherine asked Vivian behind her,"What did she say?"
"Didn’t understand a word." Vivian ruefully replied, "When we get back I’ll have to practice my listening skills in Goblin."
"Well, we’ll worry about that later." Catherine replied irritably, "I hope nothing strange happens this time."
Unfortunately, Catherine’s hopes were dashed. Thirty seconds later, fast speech was heard, followed by several openings simultaneously springing open unannounced on the ceiling around them. The openings blended seamlessly into the ceiling and were impossible to discern. Large metal spheres fell out of the openings, landing around the group. They slowed down dramatically just before hitting the ground, causing no damage to the floor beneath. These metal spheres transformed into small metallic combat puppets as soon as they touched the ground. About a meter high and supported by six legs, one limb ended in a buzzing chainsaw, while the other held a multi-bolt crossbow with fierce cold emanating from the tips of the bolts.
"Goblin combat puppets." Vivian swore under her breath, "Just because you changed their names from cleaning puppets doesn’t mean I wouldn’t recognize you. Sister, let’s defend against the wall."
"You know these puppets?" Catherine inquired while swinging her shield, pushing three members of the group towards the wall, and asking, "What notable features do they have?"
"I saw their wreckage in the Guild’s archives." Vivian gritted out, "They are among the goblins’ most annoying puppets. Their chainsaws and bolts are enchanted to penetrate, which poses a certain threat to the shield. The tips of their six legs are very sharp, also posing a certain threat. Their fire resistance is absurdly high, and their physical defense is also strong. Oh, and their core lies in the center of the lower half of their six legs. It’s tough to neutralize them without attacking their core."
"That sounds troublesome." Catherine said, deflecting a puppet with her shield while her sword intercepted an arrow. She then rotated her wrist and the miniature wrist bumper on her special gauntlet, received from the last adventure, collided with a chainsaw, sparking brilliant flames. "I have them held off, you’ll have to take care of the rest. Keep an eye on the Flower and Grass sisters; don’t let them get attacked."
"Modifying something’s name without permission can make it angry." Vivian deflected a puppet coming too close with a power impact while continuously throwing vials of two different colors and drawing runes in the air.
"Stop complaining. Uh, those puppets that fell down climbed back up, how annoying." Catherine swung her sword horizontally, launching three nearing puppets into the air. With a flick of her sword, a metallic arm embedded with a chainsaw flew off. "These puppets aren’t too hard to handle, but we need to hurry. I fear they might have reinforcements."
"Okay, setup is complete." Vivian threw the last potion, her smirk concealed a cold delight as she snapped her fingers, "Vivian Mode: Aria of Ice and Fire."
As Vivian snapped her fingers, Catherine could feel a barrier rise before her that seemed to keep the temperature out. It was as if the temperature beyond the barrier was plummeting, the ground quickly covered with a layer of frost. Even protected by the barrier, Catherine could feel the biting chill outside. The eight puppets’ actions began slowing, making it easier for Catherine to contain them within the cold area. Catherine discarded her sword and took up another shield, wielding two shields that danced around as they locked in on the enemies. After the cold period, blistering heat raised the temperature by hundreds of degrees, causing the ice covering the ground to quickly disappear, and the air twisted under the intense heat. The high heat did no damage to the metallic puppets, but their overheating could cause problems. But the high temperature lasted only ten seconds, before the extreme cold returned.
The temperature had fluctuated twelve times between extreme cold and extreme heat in just two minutes since Vivian snapped her fingers. When the temperature changed for the thirteenth time, the puppets’ metallic bodies abruptly began to self-destruct, and with the fourteenth change, all puppets began to disintegrate. By the fifteenth time, the ground was littered with metallic limbs. The puppets’ main bodies remained intact, but all their limbs had disjointed, leaving only naked frames squirming on the ground.
