Chapter 301: Chapter 13 - The Lady Who Believes in the War God_1

"Grrr, grrr." The bread appeared mouthwatering, and the giant sword woman gobbled it up enthusiastically, eating with great gusto. Lina glanced at the two pieces in her hand, Pannis looked at the six left in his bag, both of them then fell their gazes on the plate in front of the giant sword woman, their heads dropped despondently.

The giant sword woman seemed to be in her mid-to-late twenties, with a clean and refreshing appearance. She had a head of fluffy black hair, and although there was a hint of wildness in her eyes and brows, her physique was not particularly tall or robust. In fact, compared to her giant sword, she seemed petite, but the muscles on her body were incredibly well-toned and solid. Each muscle seemed to burst with explosive power. Combined with her appearance, seeing her was like seeing a leopardess, full of explosive and aggressive power. Clearly dangerous, yet irresistibly inviting.

Although it was winter, the giant sword woman was dressed very thinly, her forearms even bare, revealing her bronze skin beneath the sleeves. She wore a half-sleeved top, and thankfully, normal trousers. However, they were men’s trousers, those worn by farmers for hard work, loose and convenient, not restricting movement at all. Sensing their gazes on her, the giant sword woman glances back. It was hard to picture, such a woman, with such serene eyes. Like a shallow pool of water, clear and calm, reassuring and peaceful when observed.

"You’ve been looking at me, what’s wrong?" Her voice was slightly deep but just as gentle and soothing as her gaze; it was comforting to hear. "Do you need help with something?"

"No, it’s nothing. We are just a bit surprised." Almost blurting out the rude remark, ’surprised at your eating capacity’, Lina chuckled awkwardly. Using the typical tone of the religious community, she said, "I didn’t expect to meet a friend from the War God Church here. Sorry, I noticed your church’s emblem."

"That’s fine, it’s meant to be worn openly, it’s not private information." The giant sword woman nodded understandingly. A gentle smile spread across her wild face. "No wonder you’re surprised. In the human regions, there aren’t many followers of the War God Church. There are only two temples of my god throughout Neville. Many are surprised when they meet me, so you don’t need to apologize."

"Two temples?" Pannis suddenly asked, "Since we’ve met you here, is there one nearby?"

"Yes, in a town only seventy kilometers away." The female swordsman didn’t hesitate at Pannis’s abrupt question and explained patiently.

"Hmm, let me guess." Pannis sat down not far from the swordswoman, pulling Lina with him. Expressing his interest in their new acquaintance, he said, "Could it be that you’re representing the War God Temple in this operation?"

"You’re...?" The female swordsman puzzled for a moment before realizing, "You’re also here for the joint operation?"

"The Church of the Earth Goddess, Helena, Gold Rank Sage." Lina offered her hand for a handshake, "You may call me Lina. I am glad we’ll be working together soon."

"Uh, hello." The female swordsman appeared quite uncomfortable with deep interactions with others. With a slight struggle in her eyes, she softly said, "War God Church, Marcia, Gold Rank Warrior."

"Don’t be so formal." Lina gently patted Marcia’s hand. Comforting her as an older sister would, she said, "We’ll be working together for the few days coming. We need to understand each other."

"Sorry, I’m used to being alone in the wild. And in the church, I don’t have much interaction with others." Marcia, the female swordsman, smiled thankfully, but soon withdrew her hand, clearly still uncomfortable. "How did you two end up here?"

"We just happened to be passing by, and as a result, unexpectedly ran into you." Lina answered, "There is a meeting soon, I didn’t expect you to be eating here."

"I’ll finish quickly." Looking at the tray in front of her, Marcia laughed awkwardly. "Eating well is the first principle of combat. The church has been teaching us for years that only when you are well-fed can you achieve victory in battle. Even though I favor peace and dislike combat, this rule still has to be followed."

"But we are only just going to a meeting, not a battle." Lina said, torn between laughter and tears, "Anyway, continue eating. We’ll wait for you, and all go over together."

Marcia may be eating fast, but surprisingly her actions did not look coarse at all. It seemed as if a bun larger than her palm became half the size with just a touch to her mouth, and with another touch, the bun vanished. Pannis and Lina watched this epic battle of the bread gobbling with strange expressions, not knowing how to react.

"You mentioned you hated fighting?" Pannis asked, "Even as a member of the War God Church, you dislike combat?"

"Yes, I prefer peace." As Marcia was attacking her fifth bread roll and gulping down half her milk in one breath, she nodded to Pannis’s question. "I may be a follower of the War God, but I hate wars. I love living in tranquil little towns, living a peaceful life. Even without battles, I feel satisfied."

"It doesn’t interfere with talking?" Pannis’s shocked exclamation revealed his true intended purpose: "Eating and carrying on a normal conversation at the same time, that’s absolutely miraculous."

"Enough already, that is so rude, tone it down." Lina glared at Pannis: "Marcia, don’t mind him, he sometimes goes off the rails. Just pretend he’s not here and continue eating."

Marcia had a gentle temper and didn’t get angry. Instead, she thought it was quite amusing and laughed saying: "It’s okay, I guess this can be considered one of my special abilities. Eating doesn’t interfere with my talking. Every time we eat at the church, some people are surprised, though not as exaggerated as this gentleman here."

Lina looked bewildered at Marcia’s plate where only a single piece of bread had been left during her speech. She awkwardly raised her own share of the meal: "Would you like some more? I still have some here."

"Thank you, I was just thinking I haven’t eaten enough." Marcia gratefully took it from Lina’s hand and ate it in an instant, faster than Lina could lower her hand: "That should do it, breakfast shouldn’t be too filling, otherwise, it makes you lethargic for the rest of the day. Feeling five-tenths full is just right."

"Only five-tenths full?" Pannis looked in shock at Marcia’s flat belly: "I think my appetite is just a joke."

"Sir, you are too generous." Marcia addressed Pannis’s comments in her mild mannered way: "I am ready. We can leave for the venue at any time."

"Your temperament really is something, it’s not put on at all. Among those combat shamans and combat priests in the War God Church, some also pretend to be very gentle. But deep down, they’re all a bunch of bloodthirsty people. I didn’t expect you to be an anomaly." Upon finishing his probing, Pannis suddenly resumed his usual laid-back demeanor, lifting his index finger and middle finger to his forehead: "Nice to meet you, I’m Pannis, Lina’s teammate. We came together to help this time. I want to apologize for my rudeness earlier, I hope you can understand."

"It’s no problem, after all, many of my deity’s followers are quite fervent about combat. Such probing is something I can fully understand." Marcia mirrored Pannis’s gesture, raising her index and middle fingers to her forehead. This was a special greeting of the War God Church, often only used among the Beastmen and experienced followers. Outsiders would rarely know it: "I didn’t expect Mr. Pannis to be so familiar with the Hall of War God, even knowing their unique greeting."

"I had a friend who was a War Shaman, he told me." Pannis sighed regretfully: "Unfortunately, he has passed away."

"His soul, transformed into a battle wolf, has already returned to the War God’s side." Marcia lightly spoke as she pressed her clenched right fist to her chest.

"Thank you." Pannis gratefully smiled, then, pushing open the door to the bakery, he shouted back: "Thanks for the bread, heretical boss. Also, don’t put rabbit tail fruit in it next time, that’s not right."

"Your jokes are so dull." Lina, taking advantage of Marcia’s distracted gaze, sarcastically shot back at Pannis in her true personality, before switching back to her previous holy and gentle expression: "We only have half an hour left, it’s not a good look to be late for a first meeting. Let’s pick up the pace. By the way, Marcia, how many of you came from your temple?"

"Just me." Marcia, as she claimed, usually lived in the wilderness and thus walked very quickly. Even Lina, without divine enhancement, found it hard to keep up. Sensing Lina’s struggle, Marcia thoughtfully slowed down a little, nonchalantly replying: "I think it has something to do with a war a few hundreds of years ago. There are few temples of the War God in Neville, which is a human country, or even in the nearby territories. Therefore, there’s a severe shortage of high-level fighters in the area. Unless they dispatch personnel from the main temple in the prairies, I would be the only one available."

"Oh my, now that you’ve mentioned it, I suddenly recall forgetting to ask Cynthia about which temples are participating." Pannis smacked his own head, speaking regretfully: "The Hall of War God, Temple of Balance, Wind God’s Hall, Temple of the Earth Goddess... I wonder who the remaining one is."

"Yeda." Marcia chimed in: "It is the temple of the Goddess of Art and Music, Yeda."

"No wonder Enbow said yesterday that two temples were too far and simply couldn’t make it in time." Pannis nodded: "One had to come from the Beastmen Prairie and the other one had to come even further, from the Elven Forest. They really couldn’t have made it. However, I remember that within the followers of the Art Goddess, the humans are mostly artists. There don’t seem to be any professionals. How did they assign representatives?"

"I don’t know." Marcia apologized: "What I am sure about is they’ve actually sent a representative, and they’re indeed a top-tier force."

"I get it now that you’ve said it." Pannis said with a peculiar expression: "It seems like some bored legendary figure has appeared. We’ll see who it is later." (To be continued.
