Chapter 300: Chapter 12 Dee Ersaren_1

"La, la la la, la la." Early in the morning, Lina was bouncing happily ahead of Pannis with her hands behind her back like a child. Every now and then, she would glance back to flash a bright smile, showing that she was in an inexplicably good mood.

"What’s gotten into you?" Pannis asked, confused by her strange behavior. "Since last night, you’ve been walking around like you just found a fortune in Magistones; I’ve barely seen your mouth closed. You’re not Catherine, even finding money shouldn’t make you this ecstatic."

After they reported to the temple last night, the two didn’t choose to stay there. Instead, they found a hotel in a nearby district to rest. Although Cynthia was insistent on offering accommodations, in the end, Pannis tactfully refused. After all, they were unsure about how long they would be staying in Diersalem City. Since they needed to frequently wander around for their investigation, staying in the orderly temple was inconvenient as the timing was uncertain; it was better to lodge in a hotel from the start. Of course, this was the formal explanation, whether Pannis declined because he feared the ancient temple infrastructure might collapse is a mystery. After chatting with Cynthia, they found a hotel, and due to the fatigue from their trip, immediately fell into deep sleep. It wasn’t until the next morning that they reluctantly woke up to attend the conference.

However, throughout the journey, Lina’s mood was exceptional. She hummed an unrecognizable tune, and she seemed to find pleasure in everything she saw. Upon hearing Pannis’s question, she looked back at him, smiled, didn’t reply, and continued to walk even more briskly.

"So, what are you laughing at?" Pannis scratched his head, looking slightly vexed. "If you keep up this weird demeanour, I’m afraid that when I bring you back, Catherine will kill me."

"I’m just happy," said Lina, her face beaming with joy. "Happiness, of course, brings smiles."

"Obviously, you must be feeling delighted. It would really be a problem if you were making this face while feeling upset," Pannis grimaced, "I understand you are happy, but I am still unable to figure out what could make you so thrilled."

"You want to know? I’m not going to tell you, hehe. The emotions of us women are something men will never understand," Lina replied playfully, giggling and speeding up her steps. "La la la, just go with the flow, la la la."

Pannis was stunned for a moment, his eyes softened, and the corners of his mouth tilted upward into a light smile. For a moment, Pannis felt like he was able to touch the happiness at the bottom of Lina’s heart, after all, whether it be pain or sorrow, there is nothing more joyful than having a friend who truly understands you.

Now that he had figured out why Lina was so happy, he decided to make a comment to pilot the happiness. So, Pannis said, "You’re right, we men indeed don’t understand women’s hearts, especially a brutal and violent woman like you who enjoys beating me up for fun. Even if we want to understand, we dare not. Whoa, whoa, what are you doing?"

"Nothing much, just thought it was a little hot and wanted to fan some breeze for you," Lina casually explained after retracting the high kick that Pannis had dodged. "You don’t need to feel grateful."

"Thanks, but no thanks, it’s winter alright? Also, since when do people fan others with a high kick? And definitely, no one would feel grateful for that." Pannis sighed deeply. "Let’s move on. If we continue strolling at this speed, we’re going to be late for the meeting."

"I always feel that today’s meeting won’t be very useful," Lina said lazily. "It’s nothing more than a group of strangers gathering and chatting about insignificant matters, then going their own separate ways. After all, it is challenging for people from different religions to coexist peacefully. Hmm, since it’s so meaningless, how about I let Blood Girl attend the meeting for me? It would surely add some excitement."

"I beg you, please don’t do that," Pannis said in a panic, urging her not to. "We’re here to investigate the blood case, not to start a new one, please don’t summon her."

"I obviously won’t," Lina smirked, "I was just joking."

"Haha, haha," Pannis gave a dry laugh, wiping the cold sweat from his forehead. "Consider myself scared of you, let’s move on."

Finally, Lina’s giggles that had lasted the whole night faded. She became serious and said, "I wonder what kind of people the temple has assigned to assist us. Hopefully, they won’t be hard to deal with."

As Lina said, the only useful information they received from talking with Cynthia last night was that the main temple had already guessed that Lina would accept the task and had prepared two assistants who arrived half a day earlier than them. However, since Cynthia hadn’t met these two assistants, she couldn’t introduce them to Lina and Pannis in advance. Lina wasn’t too concerned, since the temple had clearly stated that everything regarding the investigation was up to her to decide, including whether she needed assistance and whether or not to change her assistants.

The meeting was to be held in the Administrative District of Diersalem. Like most towns in the Neville Federation, the city of Diersalem was also arranged in a circular pattern. At the very center is the eternal commercial center, which contained many shops, banks, credit institutions, item trustees, trade inquiry centers, and other essential commercial institutions. The second ring is divided into two halves- the Administrative District and the Magic District. The third ring is a smaller commercial ring, with shops lining both sides of the ringed street. The fourth ring is home to numerous residents, nearly a hundred thousand city residents, making Diersalem one of the largest cities in the Eastern Federation. Pannis and Lina chose to stay at a hotel in this area. The outermost fifth ring is relatively large, including both the Temple District and the Artisan District. Each church in the East Neville with a branch temple gathers in the Temple District. Although it’s more than fifteen kilometres from the city center, the stream of faithful believers coming here to pray never ceases.

Being a commercialized city, by eight in the morning, the city’s traffic was already bustling. The city dwellers living in the fourth ring were surging inwards or outwards towards their workplaces, starting a day of hectic labor. Various public horse carriages were moving orderly on the roads. Every time they stopped, the group of people getting off had an ever so dull expression, their monotonous and busy days had worn down their spirits, making them lose their once lively nature.

"So I don’t like it here, I don’t like the Neville Federation." Lina looked at the lifeless eyes of the people around her with mixed feelings and said softly, "The main temple of the church is in the capital of the Neville Federation, so I saw a lot of these expressions when I was a child. They are just ordinary people, or rather timid lower-rank professionals, lacking the courage and ability to break free from the restraints of life and face the challenges of the outside world. They can only keep doing monotonous and repetitive work, day after day, year after year, without any change until they are old. Indeed, such a life can provide a stable income, and one can enjoy the safety and comfort of the city, but what’s the difference between living like this for a year and living for a hundred years? Every city in the Neville Federation is like this, full of deathly silence, void of vitality. In comparison, I prefer the City of Knowledge, which is what a vibrant city should look like."

"There are such people in the City of Knowledge too, just that you haven’t seen them." Pannis shrugged his shoulders, looking around and spoke casually, "Every large city has them, not just the Neville Federation."

"But the proportion here is the highest, perhaps this is a common problem in purely commercialized cities." Lina said: "What are you looking for?"

"Breakfast." Pannis rubbed his stomach and said: "I’m hungry."

"Don’t mess around, let’s go." Lina immediately grabbed Pannis’s sleeve and moved forward: "Luckily, the administrative district isn’t on the other side of the city, otherwise we’ll be worn out."

"Actually, I’ve been wondering since just now." Pannis asked: "Why aren’t we taking the public horse carriage? It’s a lot faster than walking."

"To familiarize you with the city. Though I’ve never been here before either." Lina pointed forward, "Look, ahead is the third district. According to what the innkeeper said, if we cross through it, we’ll be at the administrative district. The security center we’re going to is just at the southeast corner of the administrative district. It’s a very noticeable building."

"I think finding a local guide might be a safer option." Pannis gave a bitter smile helplessly, "I feel insecure following someone who has never been to the city."

Entering the third ring’s commercial district, there were noticeably fewer people than in the fourth ring. Given the early hour, most of the shops weren’t open yet, and there weren’t any customers coming to visit so early. So, this place ended up being a little island separated from the bustling morning crowd.

"Huh? A bakery that’s already open." Suddenly Pannis’s eyes lit up. Before Lina could react, he quickly fled from Lina’s reach, "I’m going to get some food, I’m starving."

"You really are..." Lina clenched her teeth and said, "You were the one talking about being late, and now you’re the one wasting time. You are really a headache. It’s no wonder the eldest sister wants to hit you with her sword every time."

"Hehe, hunger is a normal physiological response for a living being, forcing oneself to endure hunger is a perversion of human nature." Pannis, completely oblivious, gave a comment that seemed flimsy to religious figures and pushed open the shop door, "Shopkeeper, there’s a customer. Wow, the smell is so good. Freshly baked cream bread and buns with shredded meat. Huh? Wait, let me smell that, you guys actually embedded rabbit tail fruit in the cream bread, heresy, this is heresy."

"Hahaha." The shopkeeper, a burly bald man in his forties with a hearty character, was just carrying a tray of fragrant bread. He was startled by the sudden yelling of Pannis, but couldn’t help but burst out laughing after hearing Pannis’s words, "You must be from Rhea, the controversy about rabbit tail fruit has been going on for two hundred years and you guys still haven’t given up, hahaha."

"Fine, I’ll let you and your heresy slip for now." Hunger triumphed over the commitment to uphold orthodoxy, "I want to buy shredded meat bread, eight pieces."

"Does your strange sense of smell exist just for sniffing the scent of rabbit tail fruit?" Lina, who followed into the shop helplessly, really felt like kicking Pannis, "And you want eight at a time, can two people finish that much?"

"You eat two, I eat six, just right. Huh?" Just as Pannis turned his head in a smug manner, he suddenly emitted a sound of surprise and stopped his banter.

In a corner of the small bakery, facing the display window, there was a row of low tables and a row of chairs. A fully armored woman with a gigantic sword as tall as a person was sitting there. She completely ignored the two newcomers and was battling earnestly with the bread in her hand. In front of her table, there were ten more pieces of the same size of shredded meat bread.
