Chapter 283: Chapter 49 Beautiful Freya_1

"Let’s see the puppet master behind all the accidents this past five days," said Pannis, stepping up to the fissure, which yawned open at his approach. He bent down, grasping the collar of the black horse rider dragged him out of the crevice.

The rider was a young man. His appearance was handsome, and his body was attractively proportioned. Under normal circumstances, he’d likely be a heartthrob for many girls. But right now, he was in a sorry state. Despite his Beginner Gold Rank physiques that saved him from severe injuries from falling off the galloping horse, multiple rips were evident in his dark clothing, his face was bruised, and one foot was raised gingerly above the ground, evidently sprained.

"Big brother, you’re hurt," said the little girl, who had been crying just moments ago. She ignored the harsh gazes of the other women and rushed to the rider’s side, taking his arm and looking up at him tearfully. "My dear brother, how badly are you hurt? Tell me where it hurts. Let me see, let me see."

"Yeah, check and see if you’re hurt before you collapse when a gang of us beat you up," Pannis said in a grim voice. "Isn’t that right, Mister Wesker, who’s supposed to be the happiest man in the world?"

"What do you mean, ’gang up and beat?’ What are you trying to do?" The young rider stumbled back a step. He opened his mouth to speak, then suddenly widened his eyes. "You...You...how do you know... Wait, who’s this ’Mister Wesker’ you mentioned?"

"You tell me," Pannis narrowed his eyes at Wesker. "Do I need to remind you? Kara Haines’s son, Freya’s fiancé, the would-be savior who once swore to give her perfect love--Mr. Wesker Haines."

"So you are Wesker?" A weakened Catherine stared at him with wide eyes, disbelief apparent on her face. "How could it be you? You’re the least likely person to do this. Why did you do these things?"

"Yes, it shouldn’t be you at all," added Lina in a shocked tone. "Freya is beautiful and kind-hearted. Her status matches yours, and you fell in love freely. Above all, you personally asked her to marry you. How could it be you who sabotaged your own wedding?"

"Why did you deceive Freya?" Vivian appeared the angriest among them all. From her blazing eyes, one could see the fire of her fury. "Freya gave you all her love. Why should you hurt her? Why?"

"So what if I am Wesker? And so what if I’m the puppet master?" By this time, Wesker had cast aside all his doubts. "What are you all to me? What right do you have to question me?"

"We are Freya’s best friends, and we are second only to her father in closeness to her," Catherine answered, her voice regaining calmness. "Do we have the right now?"

"Best friends?" That made Wesker pause, but he quickly regained his defiance. "You all don’t understand anything. You don’t know anything at all. Freya, Freya, you only care about Freya’s suffering, her pain. But who knows my difficulties?"

"We don’t know you, so why should we consider your difficulties?" Pannis rolled his eyes with a bored look. "Before, only Freya knew you. If you didn’t express your difficulties to her then, what use is there in telling us now?"

"Pannis." Catherine warned with a glance to make him stop. She turned to face Wesker. "Freya told me that before, you two didn’t know each other’s identities and only communicated through letters. You found out you have common interests and qualities, and your relationship became closer over time. If you two were such a perfect match, why do you always emphasize your difficulties?"

"No, it wasn’t like that." Wesker slowly sank to the ground, hands clutching his head despondently. "There was no coincidence. The only coincidence was the fact that I received the first letter. In fact, I knew it was her who wrote the letters from the very beginning, even though she deliberately changed her writing style."

"You knew from the start?" Catherine covered her mouth in surprise. "Impossible, right?"

"Why not?" Wesker retorted quietly. "You claim to be her best friends, so let me ask you this: If you saw a letter in which her writing style changed, would you consider the person behind it could be Freya?"

"Ah... I guess we could." Catherine cringed a bit, then admitted awkwardly, "Her way of speaking and writing is so unique that one can easily recognize her manner of expression. But that’s because we understand her."

"I understand her too." said Wesker, "We were childhood playmates. She’s always spoken like this from when we were small. I’m used to it. So when I saw the letter, I guessed it was written by her."

"Then why didn’t you tell her the truth?" Lina asked sharply. "You clearly knew the person you were communicating with was her. Why did you pretend you had no idea?"

"Because I wanted to pursue her," replied Wesker as if it was a matter of course. "Though we were separated at the age of twelve, I remember her clearly. She was so beautiful, so gentle. If I could marry such a girl, I’d surely be the envy of all. Having such a girl by my side would surely make for a spectacle. I’ve wanted to pursue her for a long time, but I lacked the opportunity. Now that I’ve been lucky enough to receive that letter, it’s only natural that I do everything possible."

"Even so, there’s no need to deceive her," Vivian said, disgruntled. "If you want to pursue her, do so sincerely. Why resort to such a trick?"

"Haha, because it’s the most efficient method," said Wesker, no longer downtrodden. Recalling his glorious past brought a hint of smugness to his face. "Given her personality, a regular approach might not work at all or, at most, have minimal effect. However, her greatest weakness is her unhealthy obsession for the perfect, romantic, poetic love. What beginning of a love story could be more romantic, more perfect than a meeting full of coincidences? I thought it over many times; such a beginning is the most capable of moving a woman, especially a woman like her. Sir, you’re also a man. Tell me, is there anything wrong with my approach?"

"Hmm, in a way, it’s just a little trick while pursuing someone you like. It’s not an unforgivable sin," Pannis chuckled bitterly. "However, I feel that your interpretation of the purpose of marriage after you’ve won her over seems a tad peculiar. Pursuing a woman is not for... Forget it, you probably won’t understand even if I explain."

"Hmmph, just to satisfy your vanity, huh?" scoffed Catherine. "Even if your intentions were impure and involved deceit, the fact that you two share a compatible personality and love each other should be real, right? Why would you do such a thing?"

"There’s no common interest. Knowing that she was the one I was communicating with, I just chose what she would like," protested Wesker. "No matter how cheesy or nauseating, if she liked it, I just wrote it. Isn’t dating about pleasing women? What’s there to misunderstand? In fact, her letters were a pain for me, but in order to marry her, enduring a little is just right."

"So, you’re saying that you don’t share any interests or personality traits with her at all?" Lina, who read a lot of popular novels, felt somewhat disillusioned: "Then why did you propose to her? Were you just teasing her?"

"I told you already, it’s because she’s beautiful!" shouted an indignant Wesker. "Is that reason not good enough? Is there something wrong with pursuing beauty? Is there something wrong with a man liking a beautiful woman?"

Vwoosh, six gazes all aimed like piercing swords at Pannis, causing him to retreat a step under their murderous eyes. Frantically waving his hands and stuttering, Pannis asserted, "Don’t, don’t look at me like that, I truly am innocent, you’ve got the wrong enemy. It was him who said all this, not me."

"I had a feeling there was something oddly familiar about what has been said," Catherine remarked enigmatically.

"Misconception, it’s all a misconception." Pannis wiped away the cold sweat beading on his forehead, his expression turning fierce as he attempted to shift the spotlight onto Wesker: "Even so, nobody forced you to propose, did they? You went to propose on your own, so why play the victim? Don’t tell me, just over a month in and you’re already changing your mind? Your endurance is quite pathetic."

"Of course, it was me who proposed," Wesker lamented. "But who would’ve expected that to happen? If I knew ahead, I certainly wouldn’t have proposed."

"So tell us, what exactly happened?" Lina felt the flame of curiosity in her heart starting to outweigh the anger from her friend being deceived: "What on earth could’ve caused such a drastic change in your attitude?"

"I..."

"Let me say a few words first." Freya’s melodious voice sounded calmly. Unnoticed, the carriage had already arrived silently by their side: "Wesker, until the very last moment, I didn’t want to believe that everything was done by you."

"Actually, I understand why you did it," said Freya. "I understand now."

"Of course, you understand." When it came to this, Wesker disregarded all guilt and said loudly: "Who’d have known that in less than ten years, you would..."

"Yes, who would’ve predicted it?" The door of the carriage gently opened, and the unseen Freya slowly emerged from the carriage.

Freya was indeed a gem of the City of Knowledge and supremely beautiful. The perfect arch of her brows, sparkling and clear blue eyes, straight nose, vibrant red lips, fair skin, thick blonde hair, and every proportion of her features were immaculate, radiating beauty.

Indeed, if and only if, she could lose around 330 lbs of weight. (To be continued. If you like this work, please visit (qidian.com) and vote for your recommendation, monthly ticket. Your support is my biggest motivation. Mobile users can read at m.qidian.com.)
