Chapter 170: Chapter 28 Deep Sea Octopus Clan_2
However, the Sea Race had their weaknesses as well, as they could not survive directly on land. In order to go ashore, they had to use their race-based talent, the Water Mist Barrier; without it, dehydration would lead to their death in just a few hours. Establishing the Water Mist Barrier, while requiring them to soak in a water-rich environment every few days to replenish hydration, also resulted in halving their strength, causing their combat power to plummet. Furthermore, the drier the place, the more severe the decline in their strength. Due to this vulnerability, the Sea Race was reluctant to tread on land, hence, for many years, sea creatures have co-existed peacefully with land dwellers, with no significant conflicts taking place.
It was a known fact that the Sea Race didn’t like land. Thus, when the adventure team spotted the Sea Race member, they expressed visible surprise. Nonetheless, the octopus man was not upset. Under the gaze of eight eyes, he became flustered. His blue face turned purple, the tentacles at his back subconsciously whipped about, accidentally hitting his companions several times without him noticing. Only when everyone started to divert their gaze, acknowledging the impoliteness of their actions, did the octopus man relax his anxious expression. He scratched his head, his eyes focused on his own toes, and with a weak and immature voice that contrasted his appearance, he said: "I, I, I, I am Bartholomew of the Deep Sea Octopus Clan. I, I, I am thirty-three years old."
"Hahahaha." Pannis suddenly burst into uncontrollable laughter, which neither Catherine’s threatening gaze nor the fist behind Lina and Vivian could cease. The three girls looked at Bartholomew and his companions apologetically, only to find they were not offended but appeared rather embarrassed.
"Hey, Pannis, what’s so funny?" Lina, always the most curious, nudged Pannis’s waist with her elbow and asked in a lowered voice, "And they all have that strange look on their faces. What’s going on?"
"You, you know, know the life span of... hehe, the Deep Sea Octopus Clan?" Pannis asked while panting from laughter.
"I know." Lina was flipping through her mysteriously appeared Magical Beast Handbook and said: "Three hundred years. So, he’s equivalent to a ten-year-old human, what’s so funny about that?"
"You made a mistake." Pannis said, patting Lina’s shoulder while still laughing, "I guess they made the same mistake as you when they were recruiting team members. The race you’re referring to is the Octopus Clan, not the Deep Sea Octopus Clan."
"Deep Sea Octopus?" Lina questioned, flipping through the handbook: "There’s no record of this race."
"Of course." Pannis, controlling his laughter, replied: "This sea race rarely appears in front of others, so it is normal for there to be no record. I only learned about them from a friend of the Sea Race."
"What’s the difference?" Lina asked. "Does the Deep Sea Octopus Clan have a longer lifespan?"
"Well, I don’t actually know their exact lifespan, but I do know that there are currently elders of the Deep Sea Octopus Clan who are over seven thousand years old." Pannis couldn’t help but burst into laughter again: "What this means is, when they were picking their team members, they chose a member who would be equivalent to a newborn baby in human years. Hahaha, at this age, their strength is also at its weakest. His current strength is equivalent to an infant in their race. Hmm, Bronze Rank, not bad. Hahaha."
"We really didn’t realise at first..." Commented the captain, who appeared to be a believer of the Storm God Karet, looking embarrassed: "When we met him at the Coastal and Sea Interaction Centre, we did not realise he was not an ordinary Octopus Clan member but a Deep Sea Octopus Clan one."
"That must have been his first time on land," Pannis managed to control his laughter and commented: "He hadn’t decided on his physical form by then. Hahahaha, this appearance, was it you guys who helped him decide?"
"Please stop talking about it." The captain covered his face despairingly and said: "When he said he was thirty-three years old, Benedetto described to him what a thirty-year-old human looks like. And then..."
The girls looked at Bartholomew, trying to picture a ferocious middle-aged man dressed in swaddling clothes, sucking on a pacifier and wailing, they lost all pretenses at manners and started laughing hysterically.
The childlike Bartholomew, under everyone’s constant scrutiny, wore a pitiful expression as tears filled his eyes. The man, who was apparently the team captain, was despairing as he tried clumsily to comfort the little octopus man. The stark contrast in sizes made the slightly guilty girls hold their stomachs as they fought back laughter.
"Alright, alright, let’s get down to business," Pannis was the first to regain control of himself and said with a stern face: "Are any of you injured?"
"No." Upon staring on serious matters, the captain finally let out a sigh of relief: "It’s just that Mage Giralomo was killed in action."
"We found his body." Catherine took over saying: "That’s why we followed the trail of the poison gland foxes to provide aid."
"We really appreciate your kindness, but you came too late," said the captain gloomily: "We have been trapped here by the fox group for a few hours, but a large pack of wolves suddenly attacked the fox group. We initially thought that we will be their next target after the wolves defeated the foxes, totally doomed. We were so scared that we hid in the rock cracks and didn’t dare to show our heads. However, to our surprise, after killing all the foxes, the wolves completely ignored us, took the fox corpses and just left. We definitely dodged a bullet there."
"I stuck my head out to take a look, and what an exciting battle it was! There were so many foxes, and the wolf pack only lost four or five wolves. Oh yes, the leading wolf of the pack was very unique. It seemed to be a silver-haired giant wolf. The silver fur looked just like... just like..." the young man who was sitting on Benedetto next to the captain recalled with excitement. When he got to the part about the silver fur, he pointed to Lina’s hair, but when he looked carefully at Lina, he discovered that she looked more and more like the silver-haired giant wolf that he had seen from a distance.
"What are you looking at? Haven’t you seen a silver-haired beauty before?" Lina didn’t bother to explain; instead, she curtly replied, leaving Benedetto with his curiosity unsatisfied.
