Chapter 168: Chapter 27: The Wave of Wolves_2
No one knew the course of that battle. The intelligent creatures could only see the aftermath of the war. After the war, the Beastmen alliance army was annihilated without any survivors. Three legendary powerhouses fell, hundreds of upper-rank professionals were killed, countless lower-rank professionals and ordinary warriors died. The wolf pack was only reduced by two-thirds, still with more than 60,000 prairie wolves active on the plains. They selectively attacked seven small tribes before they suddenly dispersed when the Beastmen’s demigods were preparing to respond. All they left behind were countless corpses and the fear of the Wolf Tide in people’s hearts.
In the ’Magical Beast Handbook’ published by the Adventurer’s Guild, the danger level of the magical beast wolf was set a level higher because of the existence of the Wolf Tide. While ordinary magical wolf packs in the Shining Forest are relatively weak and can only wander around the edge, the gigantic Wolf Tide with the wolf king is the top entity within the Shining Forest. They can run rampant throughout the forest, making even the legendary rank rulers in the heart of the forest retreat unconditionally.
This is the power of the wolf king, this is the pride and dignity of the wolf king.
The wolf pack maintained their silent and steady pace until they came to a small valley. The wolf king, Diana, who was leading, suddenly lifted her head and sniffed the air, then stopped. Behind her,
the massive following wolf pack also stopped. All the gigantic wolves’ gaze was focused on the wolf king.
Diana stepped on the fallen leaves, circling the same spot a few times before growling softly. Hearing Diana’s growl, the wolf pack dispersed orderly. Most of them ran to both sides, completely blocking the entrance to the valley. After Diana looked left and right, she licked her left paw contentedly, raised her head, and let out a heaven-shaking roar. The wolf pack, as if receiving a command, roared in unison with Diana and, without any hesitation, charged into the valley.
"They, they, they..." Vivian stuttered in surprise for a while before rubbing her eyes and saying, "They are going to attack the foxes for us?"
"Apparently so." Pannis shrugged, "It seems we can save a lot of effort. This isn’t too bad."
"But the poison gland foxes are quite powerful and there are quite a few of them. Can the wolf pack beat them?" Vivian looked worriedly at Lina, who was leading the wolf pack into the forest at the entrance of the valley, and asked.
"Without the wolf king, a wolf pack of the same size might not be able to win." Pannis replied, "But since the Wolf Tide has initially formed, there are no animals in Shining Forest that can match them. Moreover, the wolves’ speed is actually very fast. They can completely avoid the range of the poison by speed. Just wait and see, the wolf pack’s casualties may not exceed ten when facing more than seventy foxes."
"They’re that strong?" Vivian imagined a valley full of wolves charging at her and couldn’t help but shiver, "Should we go in and help?"
"No need, we won’t be able to contribute anyway." Catherine stopped Vivian’s impulse, "We’ll just wait here. Lina will come out once everything’s over."
"Oh no." Vivian suddenly exclaimed, "With so many wolves, will the people we’re supposed to save be eaten by them?"
"Uh, they should... not be?" Pannis said uncertainly, "Look at us, we’re following the wolf pack but haven’t been attacked at all. It shows that Lina can completely restrict the wolf pack. It should be the same for those people inside."
As they were talking, the deep forest in front of them began to fill with chaotic fighting noises and intermittent howls. The forest was in chaos. Soon, the screams of the dying poison gland foxes kept coming from the valley, indicating the unimpeded attack of the wolf pack. The chaos lasted for less than ten minutes. The sound gradually diminished and slowly calmed down.
Not until the dense forest had returned to its original silence did the sound of stepping on fallen leaves echo again from the entrance of the valley. Diana, stained with quite some blood, calmly walked out of the dense forest like a wolf. Whether for a wolf or a person, her expression and movements were both calm and elegant, pleasing to the eye.
Upon reaching the remaining three members of the adventure team, Diana surprisingly stood upright on her hind legs, licked clean the fresh blood stained on both of her paws without any avoidance, and said with a smile, "It’s over. The fox pack has been wiped out."
"Thank you." Catherine said gratefully, "Actually, you didn’t have to..."
"I know, Lina told me that we were just tracking. But among the children, many, many years have passed without a king being born. Most of them have been driven to the edges of the forest. Even if I haven’t seen it, I can feel the oppression deep in their hearts. So, I took this opportunity to help the children reclaim the dignity of the wolf pack, which will help the birth of the new wolf king," said Diana, turning her head and looking at the dense and silent wolf pack with loving and indulgent eyes, "They’re all brave, good children. I believe that after this time, a new wolf king will soon be born in the Shining Forest."
The originally quiet wolf pack seemed to get some bad premonition from Diana’s gaze. Every wolf pack leader quickly stepped out and gathered around Diana’s feet, whimpering like spoiled puppies. They licked Diana’s legs with their bodies, with some even gently biting her pants and not letting go, expressing the wolf pack’s longing for her with their bodies.
Diana smiled and wiped the corner of her eyes, squatting down and hugging each pack leader individually. She rubbed them hard, spent a long time, then stood up and howled at the sky one last time. It seemed as if they sensed the wolf king’s determination, the pack leaders one by one rubbed against Diana’s feet with their heads and whimpered back into the pack. After howling a farewell to Diana, they disappeared into the dense forest with their packs, leaving no trace.
"It’s done. The children will spread your scent to every corner of Shining Forest. In the next few years, as long as you don’t attack the wolf pack, you will absolutely not be threatened by them in the Shining Forest." Diana dusted her hands, her gaze sweeping over her teammates, stopping last at Pannis. She glared at him with a strange resentment from an elder until he looked guilty, then she said gently, "I should leave now. It was nice to meet you all. I hope we’ll see each other again."
"I’m back." A few seconds later, Diana’s unique wild aura instantly faded, and the familiar Lina reappeared before everyone.
