Chapter 1532: Chapter 318 What I Would Do

"Don’t forget what kind of deity Danacus is," Pannis said, his voice slightly heavy, his expression serious. "He is the chief god who holds the power of death, accustomed to watching over death and slumber. Death, in his eyes, probably doesn’t weigh much anymore. Moreover, he is a sinister god who has repeatedly received live soul sacrifices; life, to him, probably means no more than ordinary food does to mortals. His followers are nothing more than slightly special lives to him, easily sacrificed without a second thought. Besides, he controls the power of death. There are far too many things within it that we cannot comprehend. Should he be resurrected successfully, it’s not impossible that those followers could be transformed into undead, reborn at his side. If this is true, then he wouldn’t need to worry about his followers being wiped out."

"Hmm, if you put it that way, there’s some logic to it," Flare finally conceded, speaking with a grave expression. "If he really had such a means, then allowing all his followers to die once wouldn’t be too cruel for him."

"It’s not only about letting all his followers die once," Pannis narrowed his eyes to slits, thinking of the three moribund enemies who must be classified between life and death, each harboring deep-seated hatred and wanting nothing more than to kill the others. Yet their loyalty to their faith and their commitment to their goal had earned a measure of respect from Pannis. Now, considering that these loyal individuals had been betrayed by the very object of their allegiance, discarded like trash, Pannis couldn’t help but feel a surge of anger towards Danacus, saying with a sneer, "When Nellie told me about it, I might have been temporarily distracted by Danacus’s interference and didn’t think of it. But now that I think about it, heh, fooling those three moribund beings isn’t so simple. They have been loyal to Danacus for who knows how many hundreds of thousands of years; their understanding of him is unsurpassed even by ten Nellies combined. Nellie, merely after a few overviews of Danacus’s Memory Fragment, coupled with decades of speculation, managed to deceive the three of them for more than a decade? Hmph, without Danacus himself playing along, I refuse to believe Nellie could trick those cunning fellows. So, it turns out Danacus wasn’t just watching his followers be killed; he was collaborating with Nellie to lead them to their demise. If those moribunds ever found out, I wonder how they would feel."

"So you’re saying, Danacus even deceived his own people?" Catherine murmured, "There’s no need to go that far."

"It’s very necessary. To deceive everyone, you must first deceive your own people," Pannis scoffed. "If his followers were aware of his plan, not all might comply, but at least those moribunds would happily follow Danacus’s instructions. Alas, a facade may resemble reality, yet it is still just that—a facade. Deceiving everyone, especially the eyes of deities, is not so simple. That’s why, to avoid arousing suspicion, he first had to deceive his followers into truly dying in ignorance. He had his reasons to be cautious; if he hadn’t deceived his followers, the spy planted within the Undead Mage circle would have long traded this piece of information for greater benefits. Therefore, as despicable as his actions are, it must be admitted they were correct and have indeed caused us a lot of trouble."

"Kyle, I have a question for you." Despite Pannis’s extensive explanation, Denia, still occupying Lina’s body, asked with a doubtful look, "Let me clarify first, we don’t mean to mistrust you, so don’t overthink it. However, we’d really like to know, how did you discover these uncertainties?"

"Hmm?" Pannis blinked, puzzled. "Is there a problem?"

"Your analyses are logical, and many are points we hadn’t considered, even Weston missed these. In this regard, we must praise you," Denia didn’t skimp on her compliments, but immediately after, she sharply pointed out the issue at hand: "However, there’s one thing, all these analyses hinge on the sole precedent of Morbis, also a deity of the Death System, and it’s this breakthrough that allowed you to formulate such a comprehensive conjecture. Without Morbis as a precedent, your ideas would lack a factual basis. But at the time you faced Danacus and Nellie, you had no knowledge of this precedent. You didn’t even know that Morbis had once changed bodies, right? You see, you’ve admitted it. Therefore, theoretically, you shouldn’t have been able to detect the issue with Danacus, even if you noticed that he retained a shred of consciousness; normally, it would be highly unlikely for you to think that Danacus was luring you to kill him, as it goes against common sense. Yet, you thought so, and you were almost certain it was true. Why is that? We hope you understand, we don’t have the slightest doubt that you are looking for excuses to protect Nellie; we know you wouldn’t use such methods to protect her. That’s exactly why we’re puzzled, what led you to this speculation?"

"Ah, is that the issue? Indeed, it’s a plausible suspicion. I didn’t explain because it’s really too complicated, but since you all find it puzzling, I’ll explain briefly," Pannis scratched his head, looking troubled. "Nellie shared many things with me inside, including her actions over the years, and mainly, it’s those details that are too troublesome to recount. To put it briefly, Danacus started showing signs of waking up more frequently, and recently, the impression she had was that he could recover at any second. Uh, I suppose everyone can understand that."

"So what?" Denia pressed: "It’s said that normally awakening from deep sleep indeed goes through that stage. So, there’s nothing unusual about that, right?"

"It seems normal, but if you consider the actual context, it’s a bit strange," Pannis squinted, a bizarre smile on his face. "I was wondering at the time, if I were in Danacus’s shoes, what would I do?"
