Chapter 1531: Chapter 317: Just for Revival
"It’s only what you think," Pannis said with a self-mocking laugh, sighing. "I used to think the same way you do, only from the perspective of mortals. I never considered how Danacus would view the situation if I stood in his shoes." "Think about it," Pannis continued. "As an ancient deity with a wealth of experience, does he truly care about the troubles Nellie has caused him? Ha, even Nellie, a newcomer, was able to bring about change in a matter of decades. Should he be worried about not being able to recover quickly? If he can easily recover, why would he care about these minor issues? All of you deities are here, so let’s make a judgment. If you were in the place of Danacus, would you care about these changes Nellie has wrought upon the Realm of the Dead right now?"
"Destruction is indeed easier than construction," Denia considered for a few seconds before speaking. "It may have been easy to transform it into its current state; Nellie just needed a few decades to do it. However, to restore it to its original form would be much more troublesome. It would be very difficult for the Undead to return to their former state without a few centuries. But you are right," Denia conceded. "Danacus wouldn’t care about these minor issues. A few centuries is a trivial price to pay for his resurrection, if it goes smoothly. Hence, if we were in his position, we would also make the same choice without hesitation."
"Thank you for the correction," Pannis said, nodding at Denia in gratitude, and continued, "There might be a slight difference between appearances and reality, but the outcome is the same. Danacus doesn’t care much about the damage Nellie has done. The process doesn’t matter to him; all he needs is for Nellie to follow the path he has chosen at the final step—to seek external help, to find someone to kill her. Moreover, to recreate the successful scenario of Morbis from years ago, the person Nellie brings must be capable of delivering a fatal blow to him, which means, that person’s attack must be of divine nature to break through the rule’s restrictions. Otherwise, it wouldn’t even scratch him, let alone be lethal. And he had already arranged for the one who fits this requirement right from the start. I was able to borrow the Hunting Arrow, enabling my attack to carry divinity, and my relationship with Nellie ensured I would fulfill her wish, fitting his needs perfectly. So during the battle that year, he had to ensure my survival by any means, even if it meant granting me Undead life. Everything that followed had already been planned by him. If Nellie embarks on this ultimate path, it would mean Danacus’s plan is on the verge of success. And to lead Nellie to take this step is all too simple, just constantly apply pressure to make her believe Danacus might resurrect at any moment. Given her knightly intellect, cough, knightly nature, when no other solutions present themselves, her immediate thought would be self-sacrifice, just like the situation I faced earlier. Catherine, I’m right, aren’t I? If it were you, you’d make the same choice immediately."
"Of course," the knightly young girl replied, though she couldn’t help feeling that there was a tinge of malice in Pannis’s sudden change of topic. However, she instinctively puffed out her chest and said, "It’s a knight’s duty, as well as our honor."
"See, it’s just like that, too predictable," Pannis shrugged helplessly, "Danacus doesn’t even need to put effort into thinking to guide Nellie to make such a choice. What follows is even simpler, just continuing to apply pressure on Nellie, ensuring she trusts her judgment, then wait for the time to reap the rewards."
"But Nellie didn’t just transform this world," Flare objected. "More importantly, she provided you with enough assistance to completely destroy Danacus’s church and kill almost all of his followers. I’m not wrong in guessing that, am I? She did provide you with quite a bit of help."
"You’re not wrong, Nellie did indeed cooperate with us in wiping out the Divine Servants, but so what?" Pannis retorted with a snort, "Do you really think he cares about those followers?"
"Kyle, you shouldn’t speak like that," Flare said with a displeased expression. "Don’t forget I’m also a follower of a deity, and to be precise, so are you."
"No, no, no, you’re too sensitive. I’m not saying all deities don’t care about their followers; that’s impossible," Pannis clarified solemnly. "I’m only emphasizing Danacus. He would not care about his followers. What can these followers do for him now? His only short-term goal is to resurrect himself, and on this front, his followers are of no help. After his initial awakening, his followers were few and grew over the years, but they’ve reached a bottleneck. For a deity who cannot respond to the calls of his followers for most of the time, the scale of the Divine Servants has reached its limit. This growth only occurred in the last decade or so because Nellie, masquerading as Danacus, occasionally responded to the Undead, otherwise, the number of followers of this church would have been even fewer. With such numbers, even if all prayed day and night, the power of faith they could offer would hardly be enough to help him shorten the time to take over Nellie’s body. We’ll set aside for now whether it’s possible to wake up successfully and take over her body without his method. Even if he had the chance to wake up, his followers can’t really help. And given he may not even wake up at all, watching his followers being purged is no loss to him. Instead, it makes his plan look more authentic and makes it easier for us to believe everything is under our control. So why should he care about those followers? As for the future, once he revives successfully and invades the world of the living, rebuilding his church would be exceedingly easy. The number of people who would surrender to death out of fear is not many, but certainly not few. If he so wishes, the speed of rebuilding his church could even be much faster than the speed at which we eradicated the Divine Servants."
"You make deities seem too utilitarian, Kyle," Flare wanted to retort, but in the end, she could only give a wry smile. "The relationship between followers and deities is not like you imagine."
"Have you forgotten again?" Pannis said. "I’m only referring to Danacus."
