Chapter 1520: Chapter 306 Precedent

"Cough, cough, cough." Pannis coughed violently, grasping Catherine’s hand weakly and said, "Catherine, I think my injury is very serious, I’m already dying."

"You deserve it, and besides, you simply can’t die." Knowing that the Deities would say such a thing, which clearly indicated they wouldn’t mind, the knight girl finally let go of her hanging heart, swatted his hand away, and rolling her eyes, she said, "Whether it’s self-reproach or displaced anger, you’ve already had your say, now you should make it clear what exactly is going on, right? What does Danacus retaining a sliver of conscious awareness signify? Is it any different from your previous speculations?"

"It’s hard to explain in just a few words, but indeed, there is a big difference." Pannis sighed, and explained, "To put it simply, if you were in Danacus’ shoes, would you choose a method that greatly affects your own power recovery, preferring to delay your revival just to retain a hint of conscious awareness?"

"That’s hard to say." Catherine scratched her head, saying with difficulty, "If I were in a dangerous situation, I would probably choose to do so. However, if it’s just a slight conscious awareness and I couldn’t do anything with it, then there’s no need; it would be better to recover as quickly as possible to reduce the time spent in danger."

"Well, it’s not that you couldn’t do anything; you could still have a slight influence on the outside world." Pannis added, "Of course, the influence wouldn’t be big; it would be just enough to slightly disrupt the host’s will, occasionally causing the host to behave contrary to their own will when the host’s will is weak. But it doesn’t play a decisive role."

"Just causing disturbance? Then there’s no need to do that." Catherine thought about it and shook her head, "The cost is too great compared to the gain; I wouldn’t do such a thing."

"A very good answer, I wouldn’t do it either." Pannis clapped his hands in agreement, "I think, the vast majority of people wouldn’t do it, but Danacus did it anyway."

"Wait a second, Kyle." Flare interrupted Pannis’ words, pressing for an answer, "How can you be sure that Danacus did it? Has he communicated with you?"

"Of course not, it’s just my speculation." Pannis shrugged, and said with a wry smile, "When Nellie told me that decades ago, the moribunds found the Holy Sanctuary of Danacus, I felt something was off. To raise Danacus’ Holy Sanctuary from underground, Danacus’ Divine Power would be necessary, but Nellie would definitely not allow them to use Divine Power, so it could only be Danacus’ own Divine Power they were manipulating. Of course, it could be presumed that Danacus had made preparations before his slumber began, authorizing them in advance to use the Divine Power, which could make sense, so I didn’t pay too much attention to it. But then Nellie told me that recently, she occasionally did things that mysteriously benefited Danacus when her consciousness was not clear, like leading the Undead to build a city with a large army, almost triggering the outbreak of war. This is problematic. Can a Deity still in slumber, not truly awakened, really be capable of this degree? To mortals, perhaps a Divine Soul in sleep could do it, since their will is indeed too colossal compared to mortals, but what if the subject is Nellie, who wields a Divine Body and theocracy? Though she has believers and doesn’t know how to gather the Power of Faith, and she only allows her Divinity to exert effects spontaneously, after all, she still possesses these attributes. Can a slumbering Deity without conscious awareness really influence her will, causing her to act in ways even she finds inexplicable?"

"It seems... improbable," Flare hesitated, "After all, the goddess, like Lady Denia, never slept, and she also doesn’t know if it’s possible. Theoretically speaking, it shouldn’t be possible, even if the sleep is unstable and one is about to wake up, it theoretically shouldn’t cause such a significant disturbance to someone like Nellie, an agent of theocracy."

"Today, watching over this place, I reckon there are at least dozens of deities. I hope the esteemed ones could answer my question," Pannis surveyed the void around him, as if there were truly pairs of eyes watching him: "Among the esteemed ones present, there should be some who have resurrected from their slumber by borrowing the bodies of their followers or mortals. At least, a few cases were recorded in the war more than three thousand years ago."

Silence, an oppressive silence enveloped the space in the passage, Pannis’s question was met with no response until several minutes later, Flare uncertainly said, "A few deities have relayed through Lord Yuktiraxil that indeed there were such cases, but most of them were bodies willingly offered by the followers. Another was through... erm... a certain method, where a deal was reached with a mortal for a mortal body."

"Something like the Nightmare Spirit?" Pannis asked, "Demos?"

"Hmm, I’ve heard about Demos’s case, indeed it’s similar," Flare nodded, "Therefore, the goddess said she really doesn’t know what would happen with such forceful possession of a mortal’s body."

"Um, let me interject," Lina suddenly spoke, "Lady Denia said that a long, long time ago something similar did indeed happen. To her knowledge, at least one case occurred in the First Epoch, where a deity pretended to be defeated in battle, was ’consumed’ by a mortal, and then slept for two hundred years. During that time, nothing happened, and the mortal who had taken the body thought they had successfully consumed the deity, only not yet fully digested the deity’s original Divinity. Until after two hundred years, when the Divine Soul awakened, it took back control of the body in an instant."

"So, there was no interference, and the mortal didn’t even notice another soul existed within them?" Pannis pursued, "And then they were inexplicably consumed?"

"That seems to be the case," Lina hesitated for a while before speaking, "But the specific situation is slightly different, as he intentionally kept himself hidden, naturally he wouldn’t purposefully cause any influence, so it’s not a hundred percent certain. Theoretically speaking, a completely dormant soul generally shouldn’t affect the host unless they retain a certain level of conscious awareness."

"That’s enough information, thank you, Lady Denia," Pannis nodded to Lina and continued, "So, even though it’s not certain, I’m inclined to believe that Danacus always retained some conscious awareness, always silently observing. So what was he observing? Watching Nellie transform his world completely, watching Nellie step by step exterminate his followers, watching Nellie lead me here to kill herself, why would he watch all this—is his brain not working right?"
