Chapter 1514: Chapter 300 Bestow Upon Me a Glorious Death
"I’m sorry, Kyle," Nellie moved back to Pannis’s side, sitting close to him as she whispered, "I don’t want to force you to do this either, but it’s the only solution. For everyone, this is the best choice."
"You don’t need to explain, my dear," Pannis replied with a weary smile, shaking his head, "I actually understand your thoughts all too well."
"Heh, yes, you’ve always been such a clever fellow," Nellie turned her head to kiss Pannis’s cheek, smiling as she said, "In fact, you understand everything. You understand my situation, you feel my pain, you know exactly what I want, and even though you forced me to explain my plan earlier, I know you actually just wanted to spend more time with me. As for my plan, my current state, you’ve seen through it all long ago. I get it, so I cooperated. If possible, I’d like to keep on cooperating, but I’m afraid, my dear, circumstances no longer permit, and we’re running out of time. Every wasted minute is a danger, and torture for me."
"I’m not as smart as you imagine, at least not when it comes to your current predicament," Pannis said, shaking his head, "Is it really so urgent? So urgent that we can’t afford to lose even a minute?"
"Yes, I’m not exaggerating. My condition is worse than you think," Nellie admitted with a bitter smile, "Sure, I seem normal right now; I can cry, laugh, and horse around with you like in the old days, but what you don’t know is that on an unseen level, the war has never stopped. Danacus is frantically fighting to seize control of my body. You see, the night lying beside you could, at any moment, become the most terrible threat in the Yarran World. The first thing he’ll do is take back the curse on you and then break your neck as an afterthought."
Pannis did not respond, just stared blankly at Nellie, unblinking.
"Okay, okay, I know; stop staring at me like that," Nellie said with a bitter smile under Pannis’s scornful gaze, "I admit, the idea that things could change in the next second is a bit of an exaggeration. But his soul, it’s growing more restless by the moment, and I truly can’t gauge when he might fully awaken. It won’t be long, perhaps tomorrow, perhaps the day after, no one can say for certain."
"Is he still restlessly agitating?" Pannis pressed, "How long has it been?"
"Since his followers died off, he started agitating," Nellie explained, "I think your suspicions were correct. He can somehow sense his followers’ state through bizarre means, which is why he started fiercely attacking me after I completed my plan. Thankfully, he has been in slumber, so the assault wasn’t that strong, but as time goes on, his awakeness increases, and the intensity of his attacks accordingly becomes stronger. Moreover, I never told you, after you arrived in the World of the Dead, his assaults on me went crazy, almost as if he sensed your arrival, knowing you were going to kill both me and him. So he’s desperately struggling, trying to take control of my body before you can do the deed. His attacks are terrifying, really terrifying. At one point, I nearly couldn’t hold on. Thank goodness, to counteract him, you arranged for those children to pray for me outside. The Power of Faith worked, replenishing my strength just in time for me to keep up the fight. Otherwise, things might have turned out as I said; the next second could have brought change. But even with the Power of Faith, I’m still no match for him; I’m losing this war step by step."
"I thought knights never admit defeat," Pannis said with trembling lips, "and never give up."
"Isn’t it so? I haven’t given up, nor have I admitted defeat," Nellie replied calmly with a smile, "I’m still trying, striving to find another way to win this war. Now, we have found the method, and victory is before us. If you cooperate with me, then victory will surely be ours. So, Kyle, my comrade, my lover, would you assist a knight in securing the final victory of her lifetime? Will you help your beloved claim the ultimate glory, allowing her to walk towards eternal rest with pride and dignity?"
"I... I... I..." Pannis’s fists clenched tightly, veins on his forehead pulsing violently, his eyes full of struggle. But in the end, he could only sigh deeply, his stiff muscles relaxing, he closed his eyes in resignation, lowering his head and whispered, "I will."
"Thank you, my husband, my love, thank you for indulging my final whim," Nellie, unable to bear the sight of Pannis plunged into immense pain, gently smoothed the furrows on his brow with her fingers. With a wave of her hand, the Hunting Arrow that lay in the distance gently rose into the air and floated toward her. Nellie held the green arrow in her other hand, presenting it to Pannis with gravitas, "Then do what must be done, Kyle. In front of me now, show your resolve. Let me see once more the composed, cool-headed, and big-picture-thinking Kyle. Grant me an honorable death, so I can finish the last leg of my journey with a smile."
"As you wish, my Valkyrie," Pannis said, the once affectionate tease between lovers now coming out with difficulty. Uttering these words, images of sweetness and rapport from days gone by flashed through Pannis’s mind. The coy smile his beloved once wore upon hearing these words now slowly converged with the faint smile before him, as if nothing had ever changed. Yet the sentiment of the speaker was as different as heaven and earth. Pannis, as if relinquishing all struggle, dully took the Hunting Arrow from Nellie, gazed at it for a long while, and slowly unfolded the Bow of Release, resting the arrow lightly on the string, murmuring, "Even with a thousand reluctances, we’ve still come to this, a war that lasted a century has also reached its time to end."
"Heh, I’m looking forward to it," Nellie whispered with a low chuckle, "Thank you, my Kyle."
"So, before the war ends, in these final moments, do you have anything else to say to me?" asked Pannis, his face and voice equally rigid, "This is your last chance."
