Chapter 1350: Chapter 136: Ghost Village Chief
"Village, village, Chief, calm down, listen to my explanation. I really didn’t go out to play; I brought the guests straight back. I was just introducing our village’s farm to the guests," said Ghost Mukk as he saw another ghost flying over furiously. While waving his hands and slowly backing away, he explained as quickly as he could until he realized the Ghost Village Chief didn’t seem as angry as at first. He then breathed a sigh of relief, put on a smile, and said, "Chief, you’re so impressive! I hadn’t even reported back, and you already knew I was back. You’re truly worthy of being the Chief. Ouch, why are you hitting me all of a sudden? I’m innocent!"
"Because you deserve it, you dumb ghost. You must have died of stupidity, or maybe someone smashed your head in right before you died," the Ghost Village Chief, whose form was slightly clearer than Mukk’s, faintly revealing an elderly appearance from when he was alive. Even after turning into a ghost, he retained some of his living characteristics, such as a hunched back when standing and a coughing wheeze when speaking. However, despite the old age appearance, the elder ghost’s spirit was obviously very lively as he forcefully smacked Mukk’s head and scolded, "I find it strange how, with your intelligence, you managed to revive from Burial Bones Mountain. It’s simply inconceivable."
"It’s precisely because you keep hitting my head that my intelligence has declined," Mukk retorted while dodging the old ghost’s attacks and holding his head, "If you hit me again, I’ll get mad, you know. And we have living guests here, plus the guests have brought two of our kind with them. See, I told you, creatures from the outside world are definitely not like what’s mentioned in those strange messages—they don’t attack us on sight."
"Humph, you know there are guests here, too. There’s no one dumber than you, showing such disrespect to the guests," the Ghost Village Chief scolded a few more words fiercely before turning to face the adventure team. As he turned, the elderly ghost’s blurred face took on a respectful expression, and he said apologetically with a very low stance, "I’m terribly sorry, esteemed guests and ladies. The young people in our village are clueless about manners, and I apologize for causing you embarrassment on their behalf. I hope you won’t take it to heart."
Catherine nodded thoughtfully, took a step back beside Pannis, yielding the negotiation job to the main character in the eyes of the current Ghost Village Chief. As she stepped back, she poked him in the waist with her finger to urge him on. Pannis, who pretended to enjoy the scenery but was actually planning to slack off, twitched the corner of his mouth, gave Catherine a mournful look, and under the uniform, expressionless gaze of the girls behind him, could only smile wryly and said, "It seems that you, old Chief, have sensed it already."
"Yes, you are guests as recognized by the master." The Ghost Village Chief bowed in respect, "Every place you and your companions have passed should welcome you with the highest level of respect."
"Chief, such an attitude makes us uncomfortable," Pannis sighed, taking the Ghost Village Chief’s arm and helping him straighten his back. He shook his head and said, "When we encountered Torum at the fortress outside earlier, he wasn’t like you at all, he was very normal. Why are you taking such an attitude?"
"Torum? Are you talking about one of the leaders who led the team to build the city? Their attitude is different because there are some things they don’t know." The Ghost Village Chief let out a series of coughs, which seemed out of place for an Undead who doesn’t breathe. He continued with a strained voice, "If they had left a little later, the news would have reached their souls, too. Then their reactions would be much like mine."
"Chief..."
"Respected guest, please call me Nals." Pannis was barely finished speaking when the old ghost interrupted, "That is my name."
"But why aren’t you willing to directly call me by my name, Pannis?" An enigmatic expression appeared on Pannis’s face as he spoke pointedly, "You want me to call you Nals, yet you call me ’respected guest.’ That’s not fair at all, and it must go against the teachings your masters gave you."
"Fairness and justice are the foundation of all actions, and I indeed violated the teachings of our master," Pannis admitted, striking a chord with the elder ghost. Village Chief Nals placed a hand on his chest and said solemnly, "I apologize, Lord Pannis. The unfair acts that occurred earlier were my mistake. However, you are indeed the guest personally acknowledged by the master. On your first visit here, you knew so well about the instructions the master gave us."
"Yes, I am indeed well aware," Pannis said with a self-deprecating smile, casting a glance toward Catherine at his side.
"It seems that it was that Deity who influenced them," Catherine muttered to herself with a mix of admiration and regret in her gaze, directed toward the Capital of the Undead World where, it was said, the temple was located; she spoke in a voice only she could hear, "Now it’s almost certain, what a pity that Deity is..."
"So, Mr. Nals," Pannis nodded in acceptance of the old ghost’s apology, "Could you please explain to us what message has caused such a different attitude between you and those skeleton leaders like Torum?"
"Of course, Lord Pannis, I was planning to do just that," the ghost Nals affirmed. "However, there are too many people coming and going here. Although the message isn’t exactly a secret, it would be better if fewer people knew of it. Therefore, may I have the honor of inviting you and the ladies to a different place to discuss this matter at my home?"
"The honor is ours," Pannis replied, smiling as he placed a hand on his chest and bowed, "Then, please lead the way, Mr. Nals. To be honest, we are very curious about the bone houses of our friends in this world. We are truly grateful for the opportunity to be guided by Mr. Nals in exploring them."
"Hehehe, it’s my pleasure," Despite the village chief’s humble demeanor, Pannis’ courteous attitude preserved the old chief’s pride to the greatest extent. Nals chuckled softly, "Then, please follow me, everyone. Mukk, don’t just stand there daydreaming; go get some food for everyone. Remember, get something that the living can eat."
"The problem is, how would I know what the living can eat?" Mukk responded innocently, "Haven’t we all seen the living for the first time?"
"Er..." Nals was also taken aback, realizing that indeed, no one knew which foods here would affect the living and which would not.
"It’s alright, Mr. Nals, we can discern for ourselves," Pannis took out several large pieces of smoked meat and two bags of strong liquor and handed them to Mukk, "We also brought some delicacies from the world of the living; please distribute them to everyone, Mr. Mukk."
In an instant, the gazes of the young ladies all fixed on Pannis. The girls stepped back simultaneously, distancing themselves from Pannis, glaring at him with disdainful looks, all except Catherine, who gazed at him with the kind of admiration one would have for a deity, as if she had laid eyes on her idol.
