Chapter 1333: Chapter 119 Nellie’s Effort

"Yes, we all cooperated very well," Catherine frowned. "Thus, the two sides met for the first time with intense hostility. Our very aggressive attitude confirmed the disbelief of the Undead, who doubted the moribund’s information about the living beings’ stance toward the Undead. Meanwhile, the Undead’s organized defensive measures and militarized fortresses, along with the astounding lineup and power of their vanguard forces, convinced us living beings that the Undead had come with the purpose of starting the Second Undead War and purging the world."

"So, the Undead began to fortify their works, transforming the cities they intended to build into fortresses, and the living beings, accordingly, started to amass troops in large quantities, planning to take down the enemy’s position in one fell swoop," Pannis said with a self-mocking laugh, sighing, "The two sides really coordinated with an understanding, heh, all evolving according to the worst possibilities. Now, just a small error could probably directly trigger the war. Once the war breaks out, it’s likely that the news of living beings wanting to exterminate the Undead, and of the Undead planning to purge the world, will spread throughout both worlds of each side. At that time, if the Undead retreat due to heavy losses in their vanguard, it’s better if both sides continue to stand off using Death’s Gate as the boundary. But if they don’t retreat and instead keep reinforcing their troops, tsk tsk, the Second Undead War will truly begin."

"The question is, could the Undead possibly retreat?" Freya scoffed. "This almost impossible option shouldn’t even be considered."

"I feel that we have been calculated against," said Catherine, stroking her chin like Pannis, pensively. "In the end, we still walked into the Divine Servants’ final trap. Pannis, why do I feel that we’ve always been..."

"Not Divine Servants, but Danacus," Pannis said with a bitter smile while looking at the bustling Undead crowd below. "We’ve been calculated from the very beginning. Ha-ha, if it wasn’t for my involvement, the situation wouldn’t have developed to this stage. If I had stayed out of this matter, the alliance wouldn’t have been established so soon, and when the Undead emerged, they wouldn’t have first encountered scouts full of hostility and the following vanguard forces. Going even further back, if I hadn’t entered the Forest of Death to eliminate the Divine Servant, the Undead wouldn’t have believed their news due to the death of the Divine Servants. There are many similar incidents, so, this situation, which could explode at any moment, is completely created by my actions step by step. Without any of them, the miscommunication wouldn’t have led to the situation escalating to this extent."

"Lady Nellie... really understands you," Catherine spoke somberly. "Danacus, having received just a part of her memories, was able to calculate your every move and then make targeted arrangements."

"Yeah, ha-ha, it’s truly an unpleasant feeling," Pannis said, squinting his eyes. "Using my hand to change the tide of war—hey, that’s either a great overestimation of me or a great underestimation."

"But I don’t understand," Lina asked, puzzled. "Why would Danacus do this? Don’t you think this is too troublesome? The more complex the plan, the easier it is for it to fail due to a broken link. Danacus couldn’t possibly not understand that. With something as important as the Undead invasion, he surely wouldn’t rely on luck. So why would he bother with such a troublesome method? Why not just organize an Undead War like he did over a hundred years ago?"

"I don’t know the answer to this question, but it doesn’t prevent us from speculating," Pannis said, stroking his chin. "Undeniably, Danacus indeed had no need to devise such a complex plan. With Death’s Gate open and billions of Undead pouring out from within, although he wouldn’t have a hundred percent chance of winning, it was much steadier than creating such a complicated plan. Yet, he specifically chose a complex and cumbersome method, so let’s imagine under what circumstances he would do this?"

"There must be some reason that forced him to take such a roundabout approach—otherwise, it wouldn’t be possible for Danacus to choose this way," Catherine said seriously. "I think the only reason is that he had no other choice; otherwise, nothing can explain his actions."

"Heh, I think so too." At a time like this, Pannis actually smiled—not a sneer, but a very gentle smile. He spoke softly, "Nellie has been trying hard, it seems, I need to try harder too."

"Do you think it’s Lady Nellie influencing Danacus?" Catherine asked uncertainly. "But Lady Nellie’s current situation..."

"Not now, she’s always been trying hard," Pannis said, his eyes looking somewhat vacant, as though his gaze pierced through the girls’ faces to the emptiness in the distance. He spoke gently, "When Danacus hadn’t woken up again, it was she controlling the Divine Body, and the Undead, one by one awakening, spent each day under her influence, and developed their own civilization under it. These Undead have their own thoughts, are relatively friendly and gentle toward the living beings, and lack the impetus for a blind attack on living beings, let alone the intention to forcefully invade the Yarran World. Then, over the recent years, the Divine Servants roused Danacus, and Nellie was suppressed. Yet the civilization the Undead had begun, and the aspects of character, preferences, and habits they had formed, are not so easily changed. I think, even Danacus himself, unless he spends years or even decades to influence this nascent race through his will to gradually revert them to their original state, cannot easily stir the Undead to engage in war as before. No, no, the problems Danacus faces might be bigger than I imagined."

"Hmm, very likely," Freya said with a charming smile, her eyes, however, flashing with an intimidating sharpness. She spoke to Lina and Vivian, who hadn’t yet come to their senses, "At the beginning, when the Divine Servants made their reckless sacrifices, Lady Nellie never contacted them, nor did she ever stop their actions. She just pretended to still be asleep. It wasn’t that Lady Nellie didn’t want to intervene; probably to avoid revealing her presence in front of Danacus’s followers, thus eliciting an even more radical reaction. Heh heh, now it seems, the situation in this world has turned around. If I were Danacus, I probably wouldn’t want to reveal the truth that I’d regained control in front of these Undead. Otherwise, no one can be sure if these Undead will worship him just as they did Lady Nellie. If these Undead refuse to obey him, his grand scheme might have to be postponed for a long, long time."
