Chapter 1331: Chapter 117: The Journey Home Team
"Hmm, never mind, forget about this silly question." Pannis’s mouth twitched as he coughed slightly and said, "Since that’s the case, what was the purpose of those who left through the Door Home previously?"
Catherine’s gaze sharply turned to Pannis, but she only saw him imperceptibly shake his head, giving her a stopping gesture. The knight girl hesitated for a moment but ultimately didn’t say anything; she took a few steps back to stand slightly behind Pannis, handing over the communication duties to him.
"Purpose? Of course, it was city-building." The ghost seemed entirely unaware of the subtle silent communication between the two, responding to Pannis’s question without a second thought: "Ah, you living creatures probably don’t understand, our Undead here..."
"Wait, sorry to interrupt." Pannis suddenly cut off the ghost: "Do you just refer to yourselves as ’Undead’?"
"Yes, what’s the issue?" the ghost asked curiously: "Unlike you living beings, we are already dead, of course we are Undead. Actually, the term our master assigned us is not ’Undead.’ He considers us a special type of Elemental Creatures like Fire Element, Ice Element, so we should be called Death Element, but we find it simpler to just call ourselves Undead. Initially, our master disliked this name somewhat, but after a while, it started appearing in the Oracle like that too."
"Death Element, huh. She really thought of that too." Pannis nodded thoughtfully, whispering softly, "Perhaps she thought that the name ’Undead’ would subconsciously provoke opposition between the sides, while ’Death Element’ would be more readily accepted. Heh, she really considered every detail for the ultimate goal."
"Huh? What opposition, what details?" the ghost made a scratching head gesture, human-like in his puzzlement: "Are you talking about the name our master gave us?"
"Yes, but never mind, the term ’Undead’ actually fits quite well." Pannis smiled, not dwelling on the issue of names anymore: "I’m really sorry for interrupting earlier. Please continue, what about the Undead here?"
"Ah, right, almost forgot." The ghost showed no wariness towards these unfamiliar living beings, hitting his palm with his fist excitedly: "You living creatures surely don’t know, our Undead here are said to have been dead for over thousands of years, which means, none of us has returned to our homeland for thousands of years. Although most of us have lost much of our memories, many still hold vague memories of home. The longer time passes, the more we yearn to return and see our homeland once more. Everyone knows that after so long, the homeland must have changed, but to witness its current state with our own eyes would fulfill our desire. This yearning for our homeland is something you living beings should be able to understand, right?"
"Homeland." Pannis crossed his arms, his expression fluctuating, as if the image of that small villa on the edge of the city surfaced in his mind, accompanied by familiar urging sounds. "Kyle, you must strive. Kyle, you are not like them, do not mingle with them. Kyle, you are destined for perfection. Kyle, you are our hope." Beyond that, everything else seemed blurred. There were probably other houses near the villa, or perhaps not? There seemed to be a small garden not far away, or so he had heard. What about the rest? Why couldn’t he remember anything else? Shaking his head, Pannis gave up on recalling what his home looked like, showing a bitter smile, softly speaking, "I suppose I can understand, as long as a creature can still remember its home."
"I knew it! You surely can understand," the naive ghost said joyously: "Everyone feels this way, and many want to return home to check on it, so once the Door Home was opened, a group of people couldn’t resist and decided to scout ahead. However, it’s said that the outside is a desert, making travel inconvenient, so everyone decided to build a city at the outside exit first, to serve as a transit point for travel. After a while, we even plan to construct another city inside here, with both cities connected through the Door Home, so anyone who wishes to return home in the future can do so anytime."
"Just wanting to return home?" Pannis and Catherine exchanged glances, the unease apparent in their eyes. The information from this ghost vastly exceeded all prior imaginings of living creatures; yet, they still could not assert whether the ghost’s words were truthful, unable to rule out the possibility that this ghost’s skilled acting could deceive Pannis and the young women. However, after pondering for a moment, Pannis still inquired, "You aren’t planning to wage war against us?"
"You are strange," the ghost observed Pannis, puzzled: "Why did you think from the beginning that you were our enemy, and now you think we want to wage war against you?"
"Well, you can’t blame me for that." Pannis did not respond immediately but reflected for a moment, choosing what he thought was the most appropriate approach, feigning innocence and scratching his head straightforwardly: "Those who scouted first, after leaving, started building a city and assumed an aggressive stance against any living beings who attempted to approach. The city they built is a fortress, seemingly prepared specifically for warfare, which easily made us believe they came with intentions for war. It was not easy for us to get past the fortress and into the Door Home."
"They did that? That shouldn’t be," the ghost pondered strangely, suddenly realizing something and bursting into laughter: "Hahaha, I get it now, they must have believed those rumors. The master’s followers once sent back news from the outside, saying that the living creatures there are very hostile toward us, ready to kill us on sight. Most people didn’t believe it, but they probably did, worried that you living beings might threaten the Door Home, so that’s why they behaved that way. That must be the reason, although it’s no wonder they believed it; apparently, they sent back one last message a few days ago, claiming they had been discovered by living creatures and had been killed, and after that, there was no more news, which made many unbelievers change their stance. As for myself, well, I’m not really sure if it’s true; overall, I remain skeptical, but I don’t know the specifics since I’m only in charge of transporting building materials, and I don’t care much about these things, so believing or not doesn’t really matter to me."
