Chapter 1330: Chapter 116: First Contact

Neither were they.

A dozen undead escorted three Bone Beasts, slowly approaching the spread of white Bone Hills below. When they reached the edge of the Bone Hills, the undead controlled the giant Bone Beasts and stopped. The skeletons that were tidying the bone hills dropped their work upon seeing the arrival of the giant beasts and gathered around the location of the beasts, forming a wide circle around them. The next moment, the huge Bone Beasts suddenly collapsed, their tightly connected bones scattering as if losing control, transforming the entire creature into countless white bones within a second. The bones fell from tens of meters above like rain, clashing and creating a clattering noise, and piled up into a small mountain of bones on the ground. Following this, the other two Bone Beasts repeated the fate of the first, resulting in three strange piles of Bone Mountains on the desert. As for the dozen undead who had escorted the Bone Beasts, they had already dispersed in different directions early on and were not crushed under the multitude of bones.

The skeletons originally working among the bone hills seemed to have been prepared for this, and the disintegration of the bony beasts did not cause them any disturbance, a group of skeletons calmly spectating the spectacular scene. When the last bone fell and the sound of clashing bones gradually faded, and the rising dust also slowly cleared, the young girls observing from the dunes were surprised to find that the skeletal workers had already gathered by the newly formed three Bone Mountains, beginning to sort the messy skeletons. After collecting some, the skeletal workers carried the collected bones and neatly stacked them on the Bone Hills of similar types of skeletons before turning back to collect more bones.

"Were those three Bone Beasts controlled jointly by them? They had these bones assemble, came over by themselves, and then had the workers here collect and sort them?" Catherine said hesitantly, "Is this their special method of transporting materials? To them, these skeletons are unique military supplies, right? They treat this place as a warehouse, where they accumulate all the military supplies and then supply them to the front lines to replenish what gets used up."

"It seems to be the case," Pannis said, stroking his chin and nodding thoughtfully, "The situation is somewhat unexpected. Over the decades, they have done more than we had imagined. It seems that they not only gained Divine Wisdom, but also now possess an army and have learned to divide labor and cooperate. They have even begun to possess their own civilization, a special civilization belonging to the Undead."

"That’s impossible, it’s far too exaggerated," Vivian said emphatically, shaking her head in refusal, "No race can develop their own civilization in just a few decades; it completely defies logic."

"However, you must know that these aren’t a brand-new race created by the Deities but rather the Undead. Although they have lost a lot of memories, they always retain some. It’s not impossible on this basis to develop a completely new civilization through subtle changes, especially since they aren’t entirely reliant on themselves. Don’t forget, they might also have Nellie guiding them," Pannis said absentmindedly, looking at the busy undead, he muttered, "Look at their current situation. They have developed special methods that only the Dead Souls can use to transport materials, which is already a completely different civilization from ours in the Fourth Epoch, including the Second and Third Epochs. It might indeed be illogically quick, but the fact remains a fact."

"Be careful," Catherine suddenly crouched down and whispered, "It seems like they’ve spotted us."

"Sooner or later, we were bound to be discovered, and being discovered now isn’t necessarily a bad thing," Pannis patted Catherine on the shoulder, signaling her that there was no need to hide anymore, "The strength of these undead below is not high, just low-level Bronze Rank undead. Being discovered by them is actually a good opportunity to test their attitude and see if what Torum said was true."

"He has no reason to lie," Catherine straightened up and looked down at several undead riding skeletal mounts approaching them, "It seems these undead bear no ill will towards us."

Indeed, the undead that ran over did not form a battle formation, nor were they prepared for combat. They merely rode their mounts casually. Closer inspection revealed that while their mounts looked similar to the skeletons of some animals, there were subtle differences. All the mounts had strengthened leg bones, and the ends of their leg bones were large hooves, ensuring that the mounts could race across the desert without sinking into the soft sand. Among the five undead that approached, the girls were surprised to find that one was not a skeleton but a ghost whose body was somewhat translucent and uncertain in form. Unlike Annie, it only had a human silhouette; features like facial appearance and build were indistinguishable. Pannis, who was knowledgeable about the undead, had told the girls that this was because the ghost had lost most of its memories from when it was alive, even forgetting its own appearance. For a ghost that had been dead for thousands or perhaps tens of thousands of years, such forgetting was quite normal.

"Hey, hello there!" Just as they reached the bottom of the dune, still hundreds of meters away, the ghost waved and shouted excitedly, "You are living beings, aren’t you? Why are you here? It’s such a surprise to see living beings here."

"Uh, hello to you, too," Catherine’s mouth twitched, and her expression was strange. Since the opening of Death’s Gate, this was the first direct communication between the living and the undead from inside and outside the gate, and no one could have expected the first words to be such a friendly greeting. Caught off guard, the knight girl could only wave back stiffly, "Indeed, we are living beings, from Death’s Gate."

"Death’s Gate?" The other four skeletons reached the base of the dune, dismounted, and began to climb up laboriously, but the greeting ghost floated up from its mount and drifted to hover in front of everyone on the dune. Even though his features were unclear, it was evident he was very happy as he cheerfully said, "Oh, I understand, you mean The Door Home, right? That’s the road home for us. Haha, you are the first guests to come through The Door Home. Welcome!"

"Uh, guests?" Pannis noticed the ghost did not recognize the mark of Grimreaper on him, nor was there any change in the ghost’s attitude towards him, probably because the ghost was too weak to sense his curse. Pannis seized the opportunity and tentatively asked, "Shouldn’t you see us as enemies?"

"Why should we be enemies?" the ghost asked, puzzled, "Do you consider us as enemies?"
