Chapter 1236: Chapter 22 Home

"Lovely home, finally back." The metal gate of the western-style house was slowly opened from the inside by Pansy and Mimosa, their faces wearing comfortable smiles. Bathed in the evening sun, the girls had finally returned home. As soon as she stepped into the front courtyard of the western-style house, Lina let out an excited cheer, tossed her heavy backpack aside, and dove onto the soft lawn in the front yard, breathing deeply the familiar scent of the grass and murmuring contentedly. In fact, the girls had not been away from home for long—just over a month—but in their minds, they had struggled through hardships and dangers, especially in the last period, teetering on the brink of life and death, making it feel as if they had been gone for many years. For the priestess girl, this was particularly true. Recalling the turmoil and unease in her heart when she had left over a month ago, she now felt as happy as if she were in the Divine Kingdom, and the strong sense of happiness made it impossible for her to control her emotions as she happily rolled around on the lawn, continuously bursting into laughter.

The clear laughter drew Vivian back from her trance. The Mage girl looked around, glanced at the rolling Lina, tilted her head to think for a moment, then suddenly pounced on her, pinning the priestess girl underneath her, eliciting screams of shock and pain from her. Immediately, as expected, the two girls started rolling and scuffling on the lawn, their laughter and playfighting noises mingling and drifting over No. 6 Fox Street.

"Welcome home, masters." The maid sisters didn’t go to take the luggage from everyone’s hands because they knew they simply couldn’t lift those things. Hence, they just happily bowed, but their gazes curiously lingered on Lina’s head. The two young maids believed they hadn’t misremembered: when she had left, she had long silver hair that, in the light, shimmered and glistened like a falling waterfall. Yet, in the span of just over a month, her waist-length hair had turned into a short cut close to the scalp, yet she seemed much more relaxed, almost like a different person. However, the maid sisters of course knew it wasn’t their place to ask, so they consciously kept their curiosity to themselves and, with smiles on their faces, said, "Masters have had a hard journey. We’ve prepared hot water in the bathroom, and freshly made tea and snacks are ready in the living room. After you wash up, masters can rest there for a while, and we will quickly prepare dinner, it won’t take too long."

"Eh?" Catherine was taken aback, puzzled, she asked, "Did you know we were coming back today? We weren’t even sure ourselves, yet you’ve prepared everything."

"We only found out this afternoon," Pansy nodded, "Someone specially came by to inform us at noon, saying that masters should be arriving this afternoon. Although we suspected he might have other motives, we worried that if what he said was true, then it would be negligent of us in front of the masters. So, along with being on heightened alert, we got everything ready."

"Well, that’s nice. Of course, it would’ve been more natural without having to be on heightened alert, but never mind, I won’t force you," Catherine laughed and patted the maid sisters on the head. "Who was the person who specially came by to notify? I need to go express my gratitude tomorrow."

"Ah!" Mimosa exclaimed, and the sisters exchanged glances, whispering lowly, "We... um... forgot to ask, we’re really sorry, masters."

"It’s okay, it’s okay." Catherine shook her head with a chuckle. The maid sisters were, after all, still just two underage kids. Although they had received professional training, it was only as hotel staff, not specifically as maids, so it was understandable that they didn’t handle these ceremonial matters well. Seeing the two little ones looking down guiltily, the knight girl comforted them softly, "It’s nothing, try to remember what the person who came looked like, and what they were wearing. Let’s see if I can remember who it might be."

"He looked to be over sixty years old, and though his hair was white, he was very spry, dressed in a black suit, and he came by carriage. He seemed very dignified," the maid sisters recalled, "We remember seeing many dignified people over there, but none seemed as authoritative as this old man. We were a bit scared, so we forgot to ask."

"Who could that be?" Catherine wondered aloud, "I don’t remember knowing anyone like that."

"Must be some noble’s butler," Pannis shrugged, "Descriptions like that immediately suggest a noble from somewhere, but nobles wouldn’t deliver messages themselves, so it must be the butler of some noble. Indeed, many major nobles’ butlers indeed look more like nobles than most ordinary nobles, like the one we saw last time, Snape’s butler."

"Ah, it couldn’t really be Grandpa Snape, could it? He is responsible for the logistical matters of the war; he might know when we were supposed to arrive here." Catherine suddenly seemed to remember something, frantically searching herself until she finally pulled a Mithril Coin from her pocket, sighing in relief as she held it, "Phew, thank goodness, I didn’t lose Grandpa."

"Oh, have you finally started treating money like it’s part of the family?" Pannis drawled, "This is the first time I’ve seen someone calling a Mithril Coin ’Grandpa.’ Hey, hey, don’t kick me all of a sudden."

"Hmph, I’ll settle this with you after I’ve rested; I’ll remember that remark," Catherine gritted her teeth and huffed, too tired to deal with Pannis’s routine provocations. She patted the maid sisters on the head and said, "Alright, little ones, stop looking so guilty. We probably guessed right; it must have been Grandpa Snape’s butler who came by to notify us, so it’s all good. If they were the ones, they’ll probably come by again tomorrow. You haven’t missed anything, so no need to blame yourselves."

"Yes, then we’ll immediately go prepare the bathing items for the masters." The maid sisters perked up, lifting their heads with renewed spirits, but as they did, they suddenly spotted something moving in the backpack behind the knight girl, and the movements were becoming more vigorous. Pansy pointed at Catherine’s backpack, her face filled with surprise just about to say something when a furry head vigorously popped out from a pocket in the backpack, and immediately, a white blur leaped out, landing directly on her face, blocking her view.

Due to the speed, the young maid couldn’t see clearly what had grabbed her face, only feeling her face covered by a bundle of soft fur, while the sounds of the other girls’ surprised exclamations with laughter filled her ears.
