Chapter 1233: Chapter 19 Each Other’s Disguise
"Since the last Return of the Dead, everyone has realized that the Guardians hold the method to seal Death’s Gate," Flare said. "Moreover, everyone is also aware that although the Guardians won’t mobilize their entire race as they did at the end of the Third Epoch, they won’t mind sending one or two individuals to assist the intelligent races. Therefore, once there is assurance of controlling Death’s Gate, the races will ask the Drakes to seal the gate. The reason we haven’t contacted the Drakes yet is simply that no one wants to owe the Guardians a favor by asking them in their name. Consequently, we can only wait until the situation has almost stabilized, then approach them through a high-level joint meeting."
"No need to go through that much trouble," Pannis shook his head. "Before I set off to come here, I had already written a letter to Mina through a special channel, hoping she would immediately begin preparing the ritual to seal Death’s Gate. If I failed to stop the Divine Servant’s plan, she would step in, forcibly seal the gate after the joint forces regain control of Death’s Gate, and she agreed. Thus, so long as she does not fall prey to old habits, taking a nap before taking action, by the time my plan yields results, she should be ready, and everything can proceed normally."
"Kyle, you’re still the same," Flare said helplessly. "Even though you say there’s no turning back this time and you must succeed, you still keep a backup plan, only revealing it when it’s needed."
"There’s no point in mentioning it beforehand if it’s not going to be used." Pannis shrugged. "And this isn’t really a backup plan. Sealing the gate is just stalling for a few centuries; it doesn’t solve the problem fundamentally. The Grimreaper’s power will continue to grow, and the number of people in the outside world who worship death will inevitably increase. Sooner or later, the seal will burst, and we will have to face the army of the Undead again."
"Well, since you’ve already arranged for Mina to prepare the seal, what about the rest?" Flare asked. "You must have already planned it all, right?"
"Then, once I or Nellie send out the message confirming the failure of the operation, or once the agreed time has passed, it will be your time to act," Pannis explained. "The entire army will advance and take down Death’s Gate in one fell swoop, with the Guardians resealing Death’s Gate. After that, the races will probably have to start preparing for a long-term, protracted war, best to build a sturdy blockade at the core of the Sighing Desert, always on guard for Death’s Gate being breached again."
"Don’t you think your plan sounds a bit familiar?" Flare finally frowned, speaking discontentedly. "We’ve heard similar plans before, haven’t we?"
"Yes," Pannis nodded. "The night before we delved into the Realm of the Dead on the edge of the Sighing Desert, Mina had proposed a similar plan."
"Then you must also remember what Mina was thinking when she proposed that plan," Flare stared at Pannis, speaking solemnly. "From the beginning, she planned to use her own life to hit Danacus hard, or in other words, she never intended to come back alive. What about you this time? Is your so-called plan really not just an excuse like hers? You insist on going alone, no one to follow, isn’t it because whether you succeed or fail, you never planned to come out alive? Furthermore, aren’t you planning to use your life to make amends to Nellie, to die by her side, and forever accompany her in a funeral pyre?"
"Of course, that’s... true," Pannis’s hand trembled imperceptibly, his voice lazy as he smiled. "This is merely my plan if I fail, if I succeed I would naturally come out, and then together figure out how to deal with the relationship with this new race of the Undead. How could I possibly do as you suggest, to die for her in a funeral pyre?"
"I hope you are telling the truth," Flare stared intensely at Pannis as if trying to peer into his thoughts. Pannis, unabashed, held her gaze with a calm smile, appearing completely at ease. After a moment, Flare lowered her gaze, no longer meeting Pannis’s eyes, and said softly, "I have never been able to fathom your thoughts over these many years, and this time is no different. Now that things have come to this, other than temporarily believing your words, there’s no better way to solve the problem. But you should know, your life is not just about you. If you were to die, countless friends would mourn and cry for you. Nellie’s affair has tormented you for over a century, you should have had enough of the taste of pain and sorrow, so I hope you can consider for our sake, not to let us experience that pain and sorrow again, neither I nor those children can bear such a painful life anymore."
"Of course, I will try my best to come out alive," Pannis said lightly. "My will to survive is very strong, I won’t just die that easily."
"Huh, I’ll trust you for now," Flare bit her lip lightly, her eyes fixed on the dancing flames. After a moment, she suddenly stood up and spoke loudly, "Then I will go prepare now, tomorrow morning, I’ll contact the leaders of all forces, convene a high-level joint meeting, and do my utmost to convince everyone to implement your plan."
"Thank you, Flare," Pannis raised his head, speaking earnestly. "I owe you more and more, I hardly know how to repay you."
"Hmm, just remember that." Flare looked at Pannis coquettishly, speaking softly. "I’ll let you off for now. Once you leave the Land of the Dead and everything is resolved, I naturally will settle accounts with you for what you owe me, hehe, then we’ll have plenty of time to slowly figure it out."
After finishing her declaration, Her Majesty the Queen pushed open the room door and turned to leave without looking back, not giving Pannis any chance to object. The door of the small room slowly closed again, gradually separating the two. As the door shut, neither noticed that the other’s expression had subtly changed, as if the conversation they just had was only a pretense.
"Sorry, I lied again," Pannis said with a self-deprecating smile, fiddling with the teacup in his hand, speaking to himself. "I hope when you find out what I’ve hidden, you won’t be too angry."
At the same time, a cunning smile appeared on Flare’s face, squinting her eyes in the manner of Pannis, as if everything was already within her grasp.
