Chapter 1219: Chapter 5 Casualties and Reduction in Personnel
"Is it over that quickly?" Pannis, with his cheek propped up on the table and looking half-dead, said with a pained expression, "I thought you’d be quarreling for a few more hours."
"We haven’t finished arguing, but I felt you were already here, so I told them to pause the fighting for now." Flare didn’t resemble a noble and elegant queen at this moment, but more like the girl next door, with a wrinkled nose and a pout, she huffed, "I’ll teach them a lesson in a few days, let them see how formidable I am. But... what’s with you? Why are you making such a face?"
"I’m dying, save me." Holding a green cuisha fruit in his hand, Pannis said in a plaintive tone, "This cruel Elf, to vent the darkness in his heart, deliberately gave me this fruit, as poisonous as it gets, to eat. I’m accusing him of attempted murder, he surely wants to poison me to death."
Flare glanced at the situation on the table, guessed the true story in less than a second, sighed helplessly, and sat down weakly at the table’s edge, saying with a headache, "Kyle, could you be a bit more serious right now? My head is already aching; please don’t torture me further."
"Okay, okay, since you’re pleading like this." Pannis quickly sat up straight, resumed a serious expression, but nonchalantly put the cuisha fruit to one side, and asked solemnly, "Let’s get to business then, what were you arguing about exactly? Has there been some kind of anomaly with the Undead? I thought I heard some of the Elders mention this when I was passing by."
"Yes, but it is rather complicated," Flare finally freed from the shadows of the Elder Council, returned to her usual elegance and gentleness, she spoke softly, "Let’s not talk about that now, why is it just a few of you? Where are the others?"
"Uh, they all went their separate ways after reaching the gates of the Elven Royal Court." Pannis shrugged, as if it were the most natural thing, "After all, everyone is a top combat force in their own faction and clan. At times like these, it’s more reassuring to be back with one’s people. The small birds and the lion went back too. This experience terrified the two little birds; they’ll probably give Dillie a good scolding."
"It seems something happened that I don’t know about, but let’s talk about it when we have time." Flare nodded, "But it’s good they went back. Right now, everyone should be busy, hastily mobilizing more forces. The situation is worse than imagined, and everyone is worrying if the existing strength is enough to support the war, and if there’s a need to increase more troops."
"What exactly is the problem?" Catherine furrowed her brow and asked, "Has Death’s Gate fully opened? What have the Undead done to make you so concerned about the situation of the war?"
"Yes, about ten days ago, Death’s Gate suddenly opened," Flare said thoughtfully, "It was after a few intense energy surges erupted from the Core Forest area. Less than a day after that, news came that Death’s Gate had opened. Thankfully, by then, the forces of the various races had already started stationing in their positions, so the change was discovered in time."
"That’s right," Pannis and the girls looked at each other and nodded, "Those energy surges were the last preparations by the Divine Servants. After completing all that, they just needed the sacrifice to be in place, and Death’s Gate would open on its own. It seems Nora didn’t deceive me before dying; tsk, tsk, these people really do... stop at nothing."
"What sacrifice? And who is Nora?" Flare asked, puzzled, "And I’ve also been wondering these past few days, you didn’t suffer much harm, which means you were the winners. So why did Death’s Gate still open? Was it because you didn’t make it in time?"
"Huh?" Lina, curious, interjected, "How did you know we weren’t hurt? Could you see us then?"
"The Bow of Release didn’t come back, which means it’s still in your hands," Flare explained, "That means Kyle is safe and sound. Since he’s fine, the rest of you... hehe."
"Cough cough cough cough." Pannis cleared his throat emphatically, changing the subject, "I’ll tell you the specifics some other time. In the end, we did indeed win, but we couldn’t prevent the moribund from completing the sacrificial ritual. They deceived us, offering their eternal lives as a sacrifice, and so Death’s Gate opened. As for Nora, she was one of the moribund. Remember when we fought in the World of the Dead, the one often protected by the other two moribund? That was Nora."
"Hmm, that would indeed be hard to stop, especially unknowingly," Flare mused, "The rest of the Divine Servants should have been dealt with by you, right?"
"For the most part, yes," Pannis nodded under the girls’ surprised gazes, "Four are left, but they are unimportant, so there’s no big trouble."
"That’s good, at least we won’t have to worry about them adding complications to this Undead War," Flare sighed in relief, "I don’t want any unexpected situations to arise."
"Is the situation outside grim?" Catherine asked tentatively, "It has been over ten days since Death’s Gate opened, how many troops have died? Have the losses been significant for all the powers?"
"That’s exactly the problem. It’s also the reason for our argument in the Elder Council," Flare sighed with a pained expression, conflicted, "The battle losses and reduction of numbers for each day over the past thirteen days are all on this list, take a look for yourselves."
The knight girl took the list and after only a glance, the corners of her mouth began to twitch involuntarily. Seeing Catherine’s reaction, the other three girls also curiously leaned in, and immediately their expressions mirrored hers – bizarre.
"Aren’t you going to take a look?" Muir asked softly, "Aren’t you curious?"
"I’ve seen enough from a certain angle just now," Pannis shook his head, "No need to look again."
"Aren’t you at all surprised?" Muir questioned, "The first time I saw it, I almost fell out of the tree."
"Tsk tsk, who could’ve foreseen such a thing," Pannis said nonchalantly, "Anything is possible, right?"
"Your Majesty Flare, what in the world is going on?" Catherine asked with a curious expression, "Our side’s battle losses are zero over thirteen days? The number of reductions is two? Can you explain this?"
"Oh, the reductions are in the human troops," Flare explained, "It’s too hot in the Sighing Desert, they got dehydrated due to the high temperatures, and that’s why they pulled out of the battle sequence. Hence, battle losses and reductions don’t match."
"You know that’s not what I’m asking, Your Majesty," Catherine said with a mix of laughter and exasperation, "Has the battle not begun yet?"
