Chapter 1201: Chapter 313: It Might Not Be a Bad Thing
"These two fools, they couldn’t even walk steadily just a moment ago." In the dim grand library of the Death Temple, Catherine and Pannis stood shoulder to shoulder on the top level, looking down at Lina below, who was running back and forth carrying Vivian, who had just woken up from unconsciousness. Since they had passed by, both girls had maintained expressions of sorrow, like those of lost puppies, and Catherine, who was suffering a headache, had finally compromised, giving them five minutes to search for any meaningful books as spoils of war. As soon as she had given in, the grievance on the girls’ faces instantly vanished, disappearing between the shelves at top speed. However, having experienced several ambushes before, Catherine naturally couldn’t feel at ease and kept her gaze fixed on them from above, always attentive to their safety. Although she was softly scolding, her tone carried indulgent helplessness, and she sighed and asked, "Pannis, did you say earlier that they made themselves sacrifices to reopen Death’s Gate?"
"Yes, right from the start, they were their own backup sacrifices." Pannis nodded, saying, "In Nora, oh, that female moribund who was about to die before we talked, she mentioned that they were aware of this from the beginning—they would rather sacrifice their own souls to open Death’s Gate."
"Why are they so fixated on this?" Catherine asked, unable to understand, "Logically, since Danacus has been resurrected, even if Death’s Gate isn’t opened, they could still strengthen their sect through secret teachings, just like many hidden sects have done over thousands of years. I can’t see why they absolutely needed to do this—to make an enemy of all the Gods and mortals in Yarra over something so unnecessary, it’s simply foolish."
"Apparently, it was because of an Oracle." Pannis looked somewhat lost in thought, his expression slightly hazy, "Nora said that, more than half a year ago, the long-silent Danacus first responded successfully to their prayers, proclaiming his full resurrection then delivering this Oracle, which instructed all followers to temporarily abandon all other tasks and prepare wholeheartedly for the sacrifice to reopen Death’s Gate. Even the Array and method of sacrifice were personally bestowed by Danacus. They did worry at first, feeling that Danacus, having just resurrected, should lay low and recover power quietly, but an Oracle is an Oracle; it is not to be defied, and they didn’t feel they were wiser or more correct than the Deity, so they followed the divine instructions and prepared for the sacrifice."
"Was it also an Oracle to make them backup sacrifices?" Catherine asked with a frown, "A dark God is exactly that—a dark God, sacrificing his most loyal followers without hesitation?"
"That’s not exactly the case," Nora told them after a long study, it was their own decision," Pannis added with a self-mocking smile, his expression becoming even more subtle, "Regarding our understanding, Danacus, who shares some memories with Nellie, knows far better than these moribunds. He is well aware that no matter what, we would come here to stop them, so there was actually no need for a backup sacrifice. But the moribunds weren’t so sure, which is why they devised this backup plan now."
"It’s such a pity—if only the moribunds were obedient enough not to make themselves backup sacrifices, then Death’s Gate wouldn’t potentially be opening now." Catherine, biting her lip and showing a face of regret mixed with some doubt, asked, "However, why aren’t you worried at all about this? Ever since you mentioned your own failure, I’ve wanted to ask: you seem suddenly unconcerned about the reopening of Death’s Gate."
"Because I’ve realized that this might not necessarily be a bad thing." Pannis sighed, saying, "The reopening of Death’s Gate could have its own merit, depending on how you look at it."
"Sorry, I don’t understand," Catherine pondered over Pannis’ words but eventually shook her head lightly, "I can’t see any advantage in it; all I see is endless slaughter and sacrifice."
"Heh, I’m just pondering; whether it’s good or bad, we’ll see when the time comes." Pannis smiled ambiguously, "It’s too early to discuss this now. Actually, we can’t even be sure whether their sacrifice has truly been completed; maybe it’s just the moribunds not willing to admit defeat, deliberately telling me this to scare us, wanting us to spend the rest of our lives in unease."
"Who would do something so pointless at the time of death?" Knowing that Pannis no longer intended to continue, Catherine kept her questions to herself and rolled her eyes, "Only someone like you would think of such a way to scare people."
"Hahaha, maybe." Pannis laughed proudly, saying, "I admit, the idea is indeed very creative, but there are many smart people in the world. Aside from me, others might accidentally find such a creative form of revenge."
"I was not complimenting you," Catherine held her forehead, her head aching, "Moreover, you’re modest to a fault; it would be very hard to find another person as tedious as you in this world."
"Heh, many things appear tedious," Pannis, fumbling with his lower lip, and gazing into the dark depths of the library as if speaking to himself, said, "But often it’s these seemingly tedious methods that solve the problems that the non-tedious people cannot solve for hundreds of thousands of years."
"What are you referring to?" Catherine asked, puzzled, "Are you talking about Danacus’s plan, or about them deliberately scaring us just now?"
"No, I was just speaking to myself, not referring to anything," Pannis shook his head vigorously, abruptly changing the subject, "I also have a question, one that I’ve wanted to ask since earlier. You mentioned that Elegance almost assassinated Vivian successfully, but a sudden explosion disrupted it, and she ultimately failed mysteriously?"
"Ah, if you hadn’t mentioned it, I might have forgotten." Catherine with an expression of incomprehension, "It’s very strange, I’m also curious, but once the fight ended, Vivian fell unconscious and couldn’t ask her anything. Ah, by the way, that scroll is still on Vivian, you should take a look at it."
"Scroll? Oh, right," Pannis, momentarily taken aback as if he had realized something, nodded lightly, "Alright, I’ll take a look."
"Hey, you two fools, hurry up and come here," Catherine yelled at the two girls still searching below, "If you don’t come up now, I’ll leave both of you here."
