Chapter 1150: Chapter 262: Do You Hate Me?
"You’re saying that I had already become translucent just now?" Sitting not far from Pannis, Catherine said in surprise, "That’s a sign of transforming into a pure energy state, does that mean I was on the verge of becoming pure energy at that time?"
"The soul itself is a form of energy. From my understanding, being twisted here would first forcibly convert us into a soul state," Lina had already lost the heartbroken feeling she had earlier. Touching her almost severely bitten lip, tears nearly falling from the pain, she licked the fresh blood on her lips and grimaced, "It hurts so much, I think physical bodies can’t be directly twisted, which is why it has to first turn the body into a soul. If this process is completed, it should be irreversible, just like what happened to Grandfather. However, what happened to you, elder sister, where you weren’t completely soul-turned, that’s reversible. After the interruption, you reverted back. After turning into a soul, it’s twisted. Luckily, we didn’t witness that process firsthand and don’t know what it’d be like. Of course, we also don’t want to know, it’s so painful, I need to treat my wound first."
The knight girl looked at the rolled wound on Lina’s lower lip, saw the bloodstains on her teeth, and it wasn’t hard to imagine the kind of madness and pain the traditionally timid Lina must have been in to bite her own lip to such an extent. Had Pannis not thought of a way to save themselves at the last moment, it’s likely she and Vivian really would have killed themselves. As for whether they would choose to join her out of inner pain and guilt after killing themselves, such a guess was almost certainly correct. That sort of ending, that kind of pain—if it were herself facing it, the knight girl felt chills just thinking about it and didn’t dare continue. It was truly hard for Catherine to believe that the first one to step forward, the first one to make the right choice, wasn’t the usually more mature Freya, but the most fragile and timid Lina. But upon reflection, it wasn’t so illogical. Although Freya was mature, she was raised in a sheltered environment and had never really faced such painful choices, still in confusion until now. But Lina was different; she had faced pain since childhood, so it wasn’t surprising that she was the first to step forward.
"Does it hurt a lot?" Catherine’s gaze softened as she sighed softly and suddenly hugged Lina, who was sitting beside her. Pouting her lips, she gently pecked at the priest girl’s mangled lip a few times, laughing as she said, "Thank you, my sister. It doesn’t hurt anymore, right?"
Lina was completely stunned, covering her lips as a blush slowly spread over her pale face. Her eyes couldn’t hide the joy she felt, but her face showed a look of disgust, pushing Catherine’s face away with force, blocking her approaching cheek and laughing coyly, "Get away, big sister, it’s so gross, so gross, I don’t want your kisses. It hurts even more now, go away, go away."
"Hehe, it’s too late," Catherine pinched the priest girl’s soft cheek and finally let go of the struggling girl. Lina immediately escaped from Catherine’s side on all fours, her face flushed as she giggled and made faces at her. Catherine rolled her eyes at Lina, who winced from pulling on her wound while making faces, and opened her arms to Vivian, who had been biting her finger and staring blankly, "Come here, let your sister comfort you."
"I don’t want to, I’m not as easy to fool as that dummy," Vivian’s expression instantly turned to one of disgust. She swiftly scooted backwards to dodge Catherine’s embrace but circled around to press herself against the knight girl’s back, tightly hugging Catherine’s waist, and pressing her face into her neck while taking shallow breaths, she sighed, "This is so nice, the smell of my big sister."
"Oh dear, we’ve been traveling for several days without a chance to wash, I’m all sweaty and dirty," Catherine said embarrassedly, "It’s so smelly, let go first."
"No, I like it very much," Vivian didn’t let go, and instead clung even more tightly to Catherine’s neck. Indeed, the smell of sweat mixed with the scent of metal was pungent up close, but Vivian seemed to really like it, inhaling deeply as if murmuring in a dream, "Only this scent can reassure me. I was really scared just now. I thought I would never smell it again. Big sister, please don’t ever leave us, okay?"
Feeling the trembling body behind her, feeling the warmth and moisture trailing down her neck, Catherine’s smile faded as she casually stroked her own blue hair near her face, sighing softly, "I’m sorry for making you all worry again."
"No, I’m the one who should apologize," Vivian rubbed her tear-streaked face against her sister’s neck and then stepped back a few steps, with a congested voice she spoke, "It was you who saved me, it’s just, just, I would rather it had been me. But I also know, you will never change this habit, hehe, I don’t even need to look to know. Don’t make that face; I was just a bit scared, but it’s all right now."
Catherine let out a wry chuckle and shook her head, standing up helplessly and walking over to Freya. She extended her hand to the somewhat dazed princess without saying a word, gazing at her face which was gradually revealing its stunning beauty.
"Snap." Freya stared blankly at the hand in front of her, and after a moment, grasped it, looking up she said, "I’m sorry, that responsibility should have been mine to bear, but I lost my composure."
"I totally understand," Catherine said, tilting her head with a smile on her face, "Next time, you won’t lose your composure, and you’ll take on that responsibility."
"Don’t even think about it, you’re still hoping for a next time?" Freya spoke irritably as she released Catherine’s hand, "Let me tell you, there won’t be a next time. This time I nearly died of fright. If there’s a next time, I’ll just walk away and never want to see you again."
"Well, I can’t guarantee that, who knows about the future," Catherine said, her voice calm and fearless despite just having stepped out from the shadow of death, smiling lightly, "And really, would you just walk away? I find that hard to believe."
"Hmph," Freya turned her head away petulantly, but a faint smile appeared at the corner of her mouth.
Catherine stuck her tongue out behind Freya’s back and picked Ava up, leaning in to ask, "Were you scared? Why so silent?"
"Running a self-check," Ava said expressionlessly, "The logical system just now generated a lot of irrational emotional data, I need to find the reason."
"Thank you," Catherine said, pressing her forehead against Ava’s, then her smile faded as she asked, "Do you all hate me?"
"Big sister, I don’t quite understand," Lina said, noticing that Catherine wasn’t joking. She frowned and covered her lips in confusion, "Why would you think we might hate you? Because you risked your own life to save Vivian? Or because I hesitated, which led to your crisis, yet you don’t blame me? Or is it that something happened we don’t know about, something we did wrong, causing you to have this delusion?"
"It’s nothing, just... I had a nightmare, that’s all." Catherine’s pupils constricted slightly as she recalled the vivid scenes from her nightmare. After taking a few deep breaths to suppress the turmoil within, she continued, "A very terrifying nightmare, one that nearly broke me."
