Chapter 636: Chapter 9 The Giant Tree in the Courtyard
In this era where cell towers are a common sight, even in slightly more remote suburbs, mobile phones usually maintain a decent signal.
Situations like the present, with no signal at all, were quite rare, especially since Han Bin was not deep underground.
Could there be a signal jammer here?
However, after looking around, Han Bin could not locate where the jammer was hidden, so he hastily took a few photos and decided to go back up to take another look.
In the meantime, four more cars arrived at the garage, and Han Bin remained vigilant, sticking to the edges as he walked. Whenever he saw light ahead, he would instantly crouch down, hiding behind other nearby empty cars.
He waited for the vehicles to pass before continuing forward, and that’s how he made it to the entrance of the garage.
Han Bin took a deep breath; the slope in front of him was about thirty meters long without any cover.
In other words, while crossing this area, he couldn’t afford any incoming cars, or he would be exposed.
Han Bin waited a while longer and only took off like a sprinter when a car had just passed, heading up the slope.
However, his luck wasn’t so good this time. Just as he was about to make it out, he was caught in the headlights of an oncoming car.
The driver of the Lorrenz slammed the brakes, ultimately stopping less than ten meters in front of Han Bin.
Then the car door opened, and a waiter stepped out, asking, "Are you lost, sir?"
Han Bin hesitated briefly, then nodded, "Yes, your manor is so vast, I stepped out for some air and couldn’t find my way back. I don’t know how I ended up in the garage."
"So, you’re also a guest attending the annual meeting."
"Yes, earlier when I was inside, my suit got wet with red wine. I had it washed and had to change back into casual clothes."
Han Bin saw the waiter’s gaze fall on his jacket and braced himself as he spoke.
He knew his pretext sounded far-fetched, so he was prepared to be thrown out of the manor.
However, to his surprise, the waiter didn’t change expression but simply nodded, "Then let me take you back."
Han Bin didn’t know if the waiter was just trying to stabilize the situation before possibly taking him to a security room or something similar.
So he pretended to go along with it, "Wouldn’t that be too much trouble? Aren’t you still going to park the car?"
"It’s no trouble at all. Serving our guests is our duty," the waiter replied politely. "I can take you to the main building first and then come back to park. It’s still a distance from here to the main building."
"Oh, okay then," Han Bin said, seeing the waiter had already opened the car door for him, so he didn’t decline and got in.
The waiter closed the car door for Han Bin and then took his place in the driver’s seat, reminding him, "Please fasten your seatbelt. I’m going to drive."
Han Bin knew that what he was about to do was irrational and illegal, and it might cost him his job or even land him in jail.
But he had managed to infiltrate Red Leaf Manor, and everything he had seen hinted at an unusual and peculiar atmosphere.
If he were to be thrown out now, he would never have another chance to come back.
Han Bin had a strong premonition that he could see Tang Mengjia here again.
An overwhelming impulse outweighed his rationality in that instant. Han Bin silently apologized to himself, and the next moment, he lunged forward, pinning the waiter to the seat before he could start the car again.
To his surprise, the servant did not struggle or scream, but just looked at Han Bin calmly, the same as before.
There was no emotion in those eyes as Han Bin heard the servant speak, "What service do you require, sir?"
Despite the banality of the question, it sent chills down Han Bin’s spine.
For the servant’s face still bore the same expression as before, as if he was not being pinned down by Han Bin at all.
Han Bin tried to keep himself from overthinking and handcuffed the servant’s hands before stuffing his own undershirt into the servant’s mouth.
Worried about other vehicles passing by later, Han Bin kept one hand on the servant and with the other, he started the car and drove Lorrenz all the way down to the third sub-level.
Finding a corner to park, Han Bin removed his own clothes and then stripped the servant, swapping their attire.
He then opened the trunk of Lorrenz, stuffed the servant inside, and, though he contemplated knocking the servant out for safety, he reconsidered after glancing at the fire extinguisher nearby.
After all, this wasn’t a movie, and striking someone on the head could cause irreversible damage.
Though he had resorted to violence out of necessity, Han Bin hadn’t forgotten that he was a police officer.
He then told the servant, "Don’t move or make any noise later, I’ll let you out in an hour. If you don’t comply, I can’t guarantee what will happen next, understood?"
The servant nodded his head.
Han Bin shut the trunk, wanting to see that too-calm face no longer, that resembled an emotionless puppet.
This involuntary recollection of the Shabti he had seen earlier in the display case was unsettling.
However, luck was on his side this time, having found a servant’s uniform, he no longer had to worry about being immediately recognized as an intruder while wandering the manor grounds in his jacket.
Yet now, he seemed to be sinking deeper, as entering Red Leaf Manor without a search warrant had already constituted illegal entry, not to mention his recent attack on a civilian.
Though the civilian’s reaction to the attack was anything but ordinary, almost too calm and cooperative.
Han Bin readjusted his tie in the rearview mirror before getting out of the car and closing the door.
He waited another five minutes on purpose, and true to his expectation, there was no sound from the trunk.
Feeling irritated, Han Bin badly needed a cigarette to calm his nerves, but reaching into his pocket, he remembered his pack was still in his original jacket.
Now, there was no turning back.
Han Bin gave a wry smile, realizing that if anything were to come of this, his chances of continuing as a police officer were slim to none.
He began to understand why Hao Xiaoxiao told him they shouldn’t meet again, but thinking about it now was pointless.
Han Bin walked towards the exit of the garage; this time he confidently walked under the lights, pausing and bowing when an oncoming car approached, then continued on once it had passed.
Thanks to his servant’s attire, he smoothly reached the ground level.
However, looking at his phone, Han Bin noticed there was still no signal.
Not giving it much thought, he put the phone back in his pocket and headed towards the main building, where he then spotted a giant tree.
It was a White Ash Tree that seemed almost a hundred meters tall, the equivalent of over forty stories, with a massive trunk requiring six or seven people to encircle it, its vast canopy casting half of the manor in shadow.
